This fight scared me more than pyramid head. Pyramid Head was just a manisfestion of james aggressive personallity and guilt. Eddie was actually an innocent man, who went insane because of people like us. Unlike pyramid head, it makes you wonder, who's the real villain? That's the question that haunts all the way through silent hill.

Another way of looking at it would be all the characters in Silent Hill 2 bar Mary/Maria are different interpretations of Jame's Psyche. So while he appears to be fighting other people he is in fact fighting and killing himself.

@XlordchaosforteX That's the theory, the developers themselves stated that pyramid head was an interpretation of James's sexual fustration when his wife was ill. Each character in silent hill has a 'missing piece' of the human psyche, or in Silent Hill 2's example James's psyche. It's an interesting concept that explains why each silent hill has different 'monsters' depending on who has entered the town. I hope that answers your question.

I modded this game once to get Eddie's gun. After you mod it (before fighting him) kill him, go back to the apartments, go to the body in his kitchen. Examine it, return to where you killed him. His body will be gone, but near a meat thingy that's hanging, Examine it and James will look down, and pick up the gun. Or was this a dream of me modding? I'm pretty sure it's real.

I think the meat locker represents his cold detachment from the world, and the hanging bodies symbolize his feelings of being judged like a piece of meat by those around him. After all, Silent Hill usually turns a person's anxieties and fears around on them. So it wouldn't be surprising that Eddie's feelings of inadequacy and alienation would manifest as well.
