Having had both German and American drivers licenses for about 25 years, and having driven on the Autobahn a lot, and having driven on American Interstates a lot, I can safely and clearly declare that I feel safer on the Autobahn at 140 mph (230 kmh) than on an American Interstate Highway at 70 mph (110 kmh).
This is because, in Germany, I am surrounded by well trained professionals: people who do not blabber about their precious kiddies on cell phones, people who do not read newspapers, put on makeup or stuff burgers or donuts down their pieholes. People pay attention and stay focused. First of all, they drive defensively. They also drive cars that are very much capable of driving at 140 mph through straits as well as corners, because they have suspensions capable of doing that.
Compare that to driving in the United States. Most people do not pay attention to the road. People drive slowly in the left hand lane either because they are on the phone or because they are doing it on purpose. People tail-gate, pass on the right and do not sue turn signals. People drive aggressively, healing their ego scars left by various chips on the shoulder.
Driving on American highways is a high-adrenaline struggle over who gets to drive up front, and lays down the law and forces who to slow down. Driving in the United States has become a dreadful experience, after you have driven a significant amount in Europe, especially in Germany.
Last not least, the German Autobahn is still largely speed-unlimited, yet the fatality rate is a fraction of that seen on American Interstates. This should cause Americans to realize the stupidity of the statement that Speed Kills, while in fact it is stupid driving that kills. (And they want me to support THAT system with state taxes? Thailand, here I come )
