I always thought of Holdsworth as coming from that British progressive music scene that sprouted in the '70's. There are always plenty of American musical influences but the Brits have their own flair and ability to make it interesting from their perspective.
Bands like YES, ELP. Also Robert Fripp and John McLaughlin took things in a new direction. I believe Holdsworth is a continuation, though quite different. I though of it as British progressive Rock. Holdsworth is awesome.
What amazes me is that he would even spend the time and effort to commit to memory half of the licks I just heard, if this is what the great jazzers sound like, well then who wants to play this out of key, out of tune sounding garble anyhow. Give me Rock or give me blues, but dont insult my ears with stellar memorization, and suppose amazing fretboard knowledge, blah, this is supposed to be music... isnt it?
@Superbeast520 I see you like Buckethead... you know that 100% of the stuff he plays is "licks" and shapes based off of memory? He's good at what he does, but he only ever plays shapes that he has practised and practised and practised. What you're hearing here is a whole new ball game, and if you don't like it, just fuck off and don't insult someone who has dedicated themselves to their art as much as Allan has.
@Superbeast520 And another thing; do you think that such stellar musicians as Alan Pasqua and Chad Wackerman would play with Allan if they didn't believe in what he does? Something tells me that you just don't give a fuck. Good. You don't deserve good things.
@TruthSurge That's exactly what I meant. :) Listen to the video on youtube here from Soft Machine called World/bubbles or something like that. Next time, try to spell my name right or else I won't get a notice of a reply to my post.
@titusbeertsen your name was spelled right but maybe i didn't reply to you. i don't know. I'm very careful about stuff like that so I blame YT. :) i'll check out this world bubbles thing if i can find it.
@TruthSurge It actually was spelled wrong, you typed titusbeersten instead of titusbeertsen. Ok, fair enough. To find the vid, type in "soft machine world bundles" and then it's the 11:00 min. one. Have fun listening, it's an awesome example of early Allan playing! :)
I see by your favorite videos that you like Eddie Van Halen. Were you aware that Eddie Van Halen LOVES Alan Holdsworth and helped him get a record deal? Look it up.
This isn't "rock" music, its jazz. I like em' both, but they are different.
@taghl Very true...the recording was a 5-6 track demo cut for Columbia entitled Road Games. You may love Allan or hate him, but you have to agree that he has never (nor will he ever) compromised his musical integrity even at risk of complete financial bankruptcy. Also consider that this 6 track demo was later NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY AWARD!!
a very boring and incomprehensible load of jumbled notes and chords that pretentious cafe latte drinking yuppies prob love as they pat each other on the back aboot how unusual and creative it is
'the king is in the all together'
also , note how he makes an intentional mistake on notes 37 - 875

he has to have a great memory to visualise shapes the way he does, especially considering the changes in this type of music

:24 man, how does he play so many patterns and scales and shapes w/o ever seeming to mess up or repeat anything?
@titusbeersten, which lick is his "Soft Machine" lick? :15 is the middle of a long chromatic run.
