  • I understand the concept but if you don't include Kirkland or Fracci then you don't really have a true Giselle in this complation. You have dancers trying to be Giselle.

  • magnifique

  • loovecats your comments are nasty this is a forum to express opinions and to enrich the knowledge no to offences, thanks a lot, people who does thinks like you denote low cultural level

  • @nesundorma61

I am nasty? I explain several times why some dancers aren't here. In comments and in description. Or you can't read either you try to provoke me. Is it really hard to understand that for this video I chose ballerinas who dance now or danced not so long time ago? And I chose only those who were on youtube then? And I didn't want to show Zakharova or Semionova next to Fracci or Alonso because of completely different style?

  • Old ballerinas or young what about Alicia Alonso's Giselle?

  • @nesundorma61

What about her? If you like her so much watch her doing this variation.

  • One of the most beautiful part of this video is at the end, where you can see all the ballerinas bowing, as to indicate that "Giselle" is a masterpiece of ballet tradition that every artist dreams to interpretate.

  • i don't know the correct terminology, but i love when dancers' legs are in the attitude position when they do their pirouette. so gorgeous.

  • I like this video because it's blended together with different dancers at along the variation which is a brillant idea.

  • For Aurelie Dupont I must admit her turns at the end were not complete and her leg it was bad toward the end.But at the begining it was decent.

  • my dream is to dance Giselle :)))

  • how fun! great job with all that editing...i really enjoyed this.

  • complimenti per il videooooo

    w la danza!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is a beautiful video except for the random sound fuzzies. its beautiful(:

  • Beautiful! :-)

  • Please watch other great artists as Kirkland, Alonso, Chauviré, Ulanova and Fracci in this role. Not to forget Bessmertnova and Maximova. They are just wonderful.

Zakharova is not a Giselle. She is too tall and not charming enough. Many dancers of today are all about technique and extension, it is more a circus than art.

  • @staronella there is nothing wrong with having amazing extension or more pirouttes and such.. as long as you don't let it take over your artistry. Zakharova is a perfect example of this. She is criticized, ironically, because her extensions are too big.. and it somehow takes away from her artistry. That is compltely false. Svt Zak is one of the greatest artists I've seen. It is true for some dancers though, like Alina Somova. To her it is all about extension. THAT bothers me.

  • Where the hell is Gelsey Kirkland?!?!

  • @tutugirl4life

    Please, read description.

  • Svetlana Zakharova <3 <3 <3 !!the best!

  • absolutely, Gelsey should have headed the list!!!!!!!!!

  • why is the greatest Giselle of all time, Gelsey Kirkland, part of this montage?

  • I love alina as giselle!

  • they're all great

  • where is carla fracci??

  • Oh yes, Fracci is one of the best Giselles ever. Why I dind't put her here - I explain that to someone else some time ago. I didn't want to put such ballerinas as Zakharova (or Semionova and other you can see here) and Fracci together because they are from different period and because of this represent completely different style.

  • Irina Kolesnikova e Svetlana Zakharova <3

  • Alina; the best Giselle ever!

  • my favourites were obraztsova and makhalina

  • Aurèlie Dupont e Yulia Makhalina sono le mie preferite di questo video...

E in teatro tutt'e due molto commoventi.

  • I like this! Nice idea!

  • nice video

  • My favorite in this video is Aurelie Dupont. I love POB, I think the way they dance classical ballet is so wonderful, they give it the respect and purity that it deserves. Also, Semionova, Obratszova, Lunkina, and Makhalina are wonderful. I love Kolesnikova, however I wasn't as blown away by her Giselle as I was by her Swan Lake.

  • Great Makhalina !

  • Oh yes. She's pure perfection.

  • Alina Cojocaru, Alessandra Ferri and Semionova... They fit in the role!

  • custom Grishkos

  • Zakharova &'nd Seminova are the Best!

  • Zakarova and Ferri are the best!

  • they are all so beautiful!!!!! ahhh.... I would kill for their abilities.... must practice more! *rushes back to barre*

  • Fiquei feliz em ver que até Zahkarova truca o pé no arabesque! Que vergonha... uma bailarina num naipe desses fazendo uma coisa dessas? rsrsrsrsrsr

  • great vid... I like Ferri's variation best

  • This is really neat!

  • Great idea! Big edit!

  • thanks :)

  • omg! who is the 1st ballerina at 0.15 when she does the arebesque then the ponche' staying on pointe! ahhh. beautiful.

    zakharova all the way.

  • it is Irina Kolesnikova

  • This is SO AWESOME!!!! : )

  • love them all!

  • BRAVO!!!

  • Ah yes, the famous Kingdom of the Giselles scene

  • Very neat put together video! Thank you. :D

  • You've committed a 2 major sins of omission here by not including:

    Natalia Makarova

    Carla Fracci

Fracci considered the greatest Giselle of our time, Makarova a close second. Alonso of course, shame on me.

    Both have videos available here.

  • Yeah, I know it, but I didn't want to compare them to contemporary ballerinas, because they have different style.

  • That's probably a good idea, because the older dancers don't have the same style, they have the "correct style". There isn't very much room in the Romantic Style for variables - it's very specific. In terms of technique, well, that's a different issue, it rightfully evolves, but that doesn't give anyone the right to use 180 extensions with a full length tutu bunched up around her waist; it's awful.

  • this is so cool! what a great idea

  • è carinissimo!!

  • wow! well done video!

    i love all ballerinas.

  • wow great editing

  • Thanks for posting this. Surprisingly, my favorite portrayal was Lunkina, even though her feet weren't always pointed.

  • great edition!

  • great video!!!i think semionova kolesnikova and lukina are the best!!!!!!!!!!!i love them!!!!

  • Svetlana Zakharova est la meilleure "Giselle" que je connaisse. Elle est d'une telle pureté dans ses mouvements. Je l'admire.

  • Lunkina is so graceful. I like her.

    Claudio

  • My favourites are Alina and Yevgeniya too (ahem, BalletVoldy's opinion is based on mine I guess :P She has to listen to me all the time...) and while I don't like Zaharova, I think it isn't nice to say she makes you sick...

  • Yes, Evgenia is so innocent and she looks very naive :)

And about Zakharova ... The main reason I don't like her is her expression. She has the SAME smile in every role. In Kitri, Giselle, Aurora. Same. Another thing that bothers me about her, are her extensions. Ok, she has great extensions, but ... She extends too much. If you saw her pictures of grand jetes you saw she's waaaaaaay over 180 degrees.

We can make our little discuss here :) I love having discusses :D

  • Yes, Zakharova's extensions are amazing, but because of it and because of her lack of acting she reminds me gymnast, not ballet dancer...

And also she is very theatrical, when she's smiling, she doesn't do it because of mood of character she's dancing, but she's smiling to the audience, so her performance is, I can't find the world... affected? unnatural? (I hope you understand what I mean).

  • Yes, I absolutely understand you. It's almost the same with Somova (she's still very young, she has time to improve). They have extensions and the same smile. Somova reminds of Zakharova SO much.

I really don't understand people who adore those two dancers. They aren't even dancers anymore, but gymnasts!

Oh, I remembered another thing that bothers me a lot. Musicality (sp?). None of them two has lots of musicality. Did you see Somova's Tchaikovsky PDD variation? It's HORRIBLE. No musicality!

  • I've just seen it and I don't like it... And her fouettes are exactly like Zakharova's, her leg looks weird... Maybe she will improve, but maybe in the future she will be second Zakharova.

  • Second Zakharova? That scares me a lot. One is enough.

  • BalletVoldy: Thank you for your comments. I do not know Somova but I agree about Zakharova. Amazing gymnast, but when it comes to showing us her soul, nothing to show.

  • Unfortunately that's true. She's such an amazingly gifted dancer, but she like many fail to realize that technique must be used to serve the music, not the other way around. This is largely the fault not only of managers and coaches, but the ballet audiences themselvesI would say the exceptions are some of the POB Etoile -they have an exquisite stage presence, and have incredible musical intelligence..

  • Ah,this is in addition to the fact that ultra high extensions are completely unsuitable for the romantic style

  • Seconded -- no, thirded -- Andante735. Well said!

  • i agree

  • I love Alina and Evgenia :)

Zakharova makes me sort of ... sick.

  • Oh God, by mistake I deleted this answer... So again:

I understand what you feel. For me Zakharova is only technique, not expression. When she's dancing she seems to enjoy it, and she seems to be happy that audience admires her, but she's just herself, she doesn't act, but for me if she's dancing Giselle, I want her to be Giselle, not Zakharova.

I also love Evgenia, her Giselle is so lovely and girlish :)

  • very beautiful piece.

    i love zakharova best.

thanks for uploading such a wonderful clip!

i'd be looking forward for more! =)

  • Un video espléndido! solamente, demasiado breve para poder comparar mejor...
