How does your Berta NOT kill everyone else in your tank? I heard that they'll even fight females unless they're mating and a 1:1 ration of male to female is no good either, he'll harass her to death

@NatashaG1987 I have been keeping bettas for years and I find that they're not all that agressive. You can keep most fish with them providing they don't look like a betta ( bc of the long fins, like guppies, angels, sailfin mollies) as the male will think it is competition, and will attack. But anything else is generally fine. They might chase them from time to time but they're no more territorial than any dwarf cichlid. With their long fins they're too slow anyways.

it's a very sweet thought to want to give you male betta fish a girlfriend, I had the same thought and realize that you've probably gone through this process but you should only get a female if you want to breed them, you would also need 2 females, as he'll most likely attack them and 2 will spread out the violence. So do please look into it a bit more before you purchase a female. If I can, I'd also like to suggest getting some marbled hatchetfish, they make a beautiful addition to the aquarium

Thanks for the advice, but I have worked in a aquariumshop for three years and still sell bettas now hehe. but I appreciate the good intentions. I have given him 2 girls as I have done with all my males. It goes very well and they are well behaved ( for the moment at least hehe ) Cheers!

They can coexist as long as there is 4 plus females in the tank and not just a single one. I've put females in with my male with no problems at all.

warning: just because it's female doesn't mean they won't fight to the death. Betta are betta, the only time two betta will come together is to mate, then they separate. If he's your pride and joy, don't put him in with a female. He'll likely get ripped up and possibly killed :( Really nice tank btw. What species is the green leafy plant?

no, its best to cut the bamboo and take off the leaves. then place it into a bucket of water for a few days so that the "resin" can come out. This doesn't normally harm the fish but its not such a pretty sight. wWhen that is over you can place it into the tank in every way you like.

Then you take you bamboo, plants, stones, ornaments, wood or whatever you want to put in there and place it where you want it. then fill it with water, but put a plate on the bottom so you don't get a "crater" when you pour it in. then I always add Sera Nitrivec which are good bacteria to get everything goingfor about 14 days. I also use Easylife filtermedium for clean water once a monthe. after two weeks of letting the aquarium acclimatise I test the water and see if the nitrite is gone. grtz J

i used normal gravel that you can buy in the aquariumshop, natural coloured, . You put a layer of about 1 cm on the bottom of the aquarium. then you take dupla root which makes tho roots of the plants grow. You put that on top. distribute it evenly and us eonly the nescesary amount. the you put some more gravel on top making it higher to the back so you get a bit of depth. Then you remove a kind of path or riverbed and put washed sand in there.

Klopt. betta's kunnen onderling heel territoriaal zijn. daarom kun je ook altijd maar alleen 1 man houden. Echter, een paar vrouwen erbij wil nog wel eens goed gaan. Zet er dan wel twee bij want dan hebben ze wat rust mocht het mannetje erachter aan willen gaan. MAAR!, ben er wel heel zeker van dat het vrouwtjes zijn want de wilde plakat betta mannen lijken heel veel op vrouwtjes. Maar daar helpen wij jullie dan weer mee ;) groetjes!

I am putting bamboo in my tank tomorrow morning! I a staring an asian themed tank, too with only betta's (1 male and 2+ Female) and surprisingly, they all get along! My male does chase the girls once in a while, but that only when he decides he wants to try for fry :)

No, purple bamboo WILL grow aquaticly, but any other bamboo needs to be able to grow partially out of water also. Using dried out bamboo is best - but be sure to clean properly and take it out yearly (top prevent rotting)

i like it very much. using bamboos is a good idea. however it makes me think possible dangers. have you observed any problem with them?

when you cut it straight out of the garden, some resin will come out but it doesn't seem te harm the fish and some shrimp species may eat it. When I could do it again I would put the bamboo sticks in a buckt of water for a few weeks first so that all that stuff comes out. That's all. It did no harm to anything in my tank :).

The white stuff on your bamboo was mold--it will always grow on underwater bamboo, since bamboo's not an aquatic plant. It shouldn't harm your fish, however.

Also, as someone has already said, your betta is not "lone;y" and doesn't need a girlfriend--that would just lead to dead bettas, since they'd fight.

If you have a HUGE well-panted atank, maybe. But in smaller tank, it does not "depend on teh bettas"--it's not a good idea, period.

I just cut it out of our garden, but I have to tell you, at first, during 2 or 3 weeks there was a weird kind of transparent gel coming out of the bamboo I think it was some kind of resin or something... it didn't do any harm to the fish and my shrimp at it so maybe you should put it in a bucket of water for some time to make shure all is out, just in case...

I feed my plants with some liquid plantfood, both from easylife. I use 2 ml of easylife carbo a day, and once a week I use about 5 ml of easylife profito.. if your plants are growing okay, then its not nessicary to use the foirst and once a week some profito will work just as good.

haha no worries, I like to help people. I use just normal darker coloured gravwl with some lighter ones inbetween for the effect. I used about one cm of cravel, then I took some Dupla Root and spread it out evenly over the gravel. I then took some more gravel and added another layer of about 1,5 tot 2 cm, sloping a bit upwards towrads the back of the aquarium. This will make your roots grow very good and gives it nutrition for at least 5 years

Betta's do not get lonely. And most definitely do NOT shove a female in his tank! That is asking for fish death soup. In no way are domestic Betta splendens peaceful. Males and females put together even temporarily for breeding inflict injury upon one another. Keep him solo, he won't mind.
