Sacha Guitry aurait dit «Quand on a entendu du Mozart, le silence qui suit est encore du Mozart.» En observant M. Bernstein, on constate que le silence qui précède est lui aussi du Mozart: la communion est flagrante.
Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, who having truly suffered, was sacrificed on the cross for mankind, whose pierced side flowed with water and blood: May it be for us a foretaste [of the Heavenly banquet] in the trial of death. Oh dear Jesus, Oh merciful Jesus, Oh Jesus, son of Mary, have mercy on me. Amen.
He was quite an accomplished conductor, yes, but at times Bernstein on camera is a bit much. So self aware in the image he is projecting for the public.
@rr7firefly I believe that one of the main reasons Bernstein was so amazingly gifted was exactly because of the depth of his sensitivities towards the music he was conducting. Without that freedom of total expression, the ultimate results are dull and uninspired. So, just listen...there is no real need to watch:):) Amazing music indeed.
For me this is the best performance of Ave Verum Corpus to be found on YouTube. The singers, with music memorized and all heads up following the conductor is, by itself, wonderful and rare. This is one of Mozart's truly great works ~ humble yet rich with humanity. Bernstein's direction and wonderful insight into the work result in a truly moving "special moment" that will shine forever. Thank you for posting this video. Superb and sublime.
What a profound and noble music. It says so much with the voices singing togheter as one.
Very welcome I must say in this period of festivities and communion. This music really has a soul, and genius, that lifts the hearts, making us feel peaceful and content. Bravo !
How can a melody so wonderful, that leaves the deepest of human feeling have been composed of so many years and now make up anything that does not pay.
I have listened to many renditions of this beautiful music. This tops all and I just wish I had been in the audience to hear it first hand. No one clapped at the end...I would have done!
My choir's singing this - we must be doing it wrong as we sing it much faster than any version I've looked up. It's beautiful though, am enjoying it and hadn't thought I would. :)
@fightthefairy Phrasing ... understanding of the words, and not simply in terms of translation ... give everything to *breathe* ... that's how this one needs to be approached. Most just seem to run the notes into each other thinking that some miraculous transformation will occur before the sound hits the ears of the audience.
Music inspires us, fortifies us, consoles us -- and unites us. I love this wonderful meeting of the great Salzburg, HRE-born composer and the superb Jewish-American conductor in this piece written in Latin, performed in a Bavarian abbey, and subtitled in Spanish.
Que decir... estoy por ir a enseñar esta obra que conozco tanto... es una maravilla poder disponer de tan brillantes interpretaciones a la distancia de un click. Esta versión del gran Leonard Bernstein es Sublime con mayúscula!
Resplendent. I don't care about the conductor or who or what or how or anything. If the notes are played, they are carried for each and every length denoted, it is a miracle. It is Mozart.
Doesn't it just seem like Bernstein wants the audience to drink in every chord that Mozart wrote. He never pushes the choir or the orchestra through but seems to savor the tension and resolution throughout. What a gem!
who could possibly dislike this? i find it unfathomable. the sound is exquisite and truly honors Mozart- though, if truth be told, i think the conductor looks kinda like a gnome. anyone agree?

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Ave verum corpus in D major (K. 618) was written for Anton Stoll (a friend of his and Joseph Haydn's) who was musical co-ordinator in the parish of Baden bei Wien, near Vienna. This setting of the Ave verum corpus text was composed to celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi and the autograph is dated 17 June 1791. It is only forty-six bars long and is scored for SATB choir, stringed instruments, and organ.

As I commented a year ago... This is the best performance of Ave Verum Corpus that I have found on YouTube. The singers, with music memorized(!) and all heads up following the conductor(!) is, by itself, wonderful and rare. This is one of Mozart's truly great works ~ humble yet rich with humanity. Bernstein's direction and wonderful insight into the work result in a truly moving and "special moment" that will shine forever. Thank you for posting this video ~ superb and sublime.
@dwf56 Just had to write to you and tell you I could not agree more with every word you have written. This a truely wonderful interpretation of great music. We are all in shostakk's debt for uploading this.
@napsuta Yes, this one little video enhances the quality of YouTube in a huge way. From America to Romania and beyond... we are all in shostakk's debt, as much as we are filled with awe.
The degree of commitment and feeling is quite extraordinary here. There is no way to fake such sentiments. Contrary to his lifestyle at the time, Bernstein must have tuned into that better part of himself for this performance.
