  • The English PEOPLE weren't oppressive, the English LORDS were, soldiers don't go to battle arbitrarily. And lets remember that the Scottish lords during the time of William Wallace weren't actually much different to the English lords, actually allot of them were interbred with each other. Tbh, the average English pheasant militia and the average Scot clansman would probably have gotten pissed together quite happily without the bloody aristocracy telling them they needed to die for their country

  • @Battleangelx I was refering to the nation, not the people

  • @Battleangelx Preach it brotha, preach it! *Raises hands wildly in the air*

  • @Brady2k10 Wait- so you're justifying centuries of abuse for the Scots not helping out the British when the Roman's attacked? But you said William Wallace was stupid for fighting the English and getting Scot's killed, wouldn't it have been just as stupid to fight against the Romans? And obviously the Scot's didn't kick the crap out of the English the majority of the time, but this song is about a Scottish victory. When the Romans attacked the Scots and Irish were just as defenseless as the...

  • @Brady2k10 ... English, so Irish/Socttish intervention wouldn't have made any sense based on your previous logic. And English enslavement doesn't justify atrocities commited against the Irish and Scots. You're basically saying, "We had more strength, so we abused them and siezed their homes". Basically you're just protraying your people as bullies. I have deep respect for the English, and the IRA are incredible cowards, but that still doesn't excuse...

  • @Brady2k10 actions of England against the lands they conquered. They were oppressive and dickish. This isn't intended to be an insult to you, just stating plain fact.

  • @Bzamm615 forget i said anything, you're not english so you cant see where im coming from with this, nearly every fucking video about scotland or celts or whatever has insults towards english and im sick of it, even if england was bad back then, why should english people now have to take this shit, its not like we was around at that time

  • @Brady2k10 I'm not blaming you personally for this, I'm just saying that the English obviously did commit some moral crimes. But that can be said for almost any nation. No one here is accusing you of abuse and oppression.

  • @Brady2k10 You think you got it bad. Try being an American. But don't let it get to you. They can't hurt my feelings with a brick. LMAO!

  • Btw the way this method of speaking and language is Doric nae scots

  • I like this version and the one by the Corries.

I can imagine this one being sung in a pub or something in front of a fire.

With the Corries version, I can imagine it being sung by soldiers, like a way to inspire other soldiers.

  • Ah thanks for the spelling I went blon. ALBA GU BRATH!!!!

  • Duncan and Faqhaurson Clan you'll live firever and so will the Christies and sae will the Milnes.

  • @Conzdunchad Farquharson, Campbell, and Davidson clan. ALba Gu Brath :)

  • Or it can also be pitlairgie if that's hoo ye spell it

  • @Rikki0 pitlochery is the word your needing it's a toon near harlaw I know this because I bide in the area and ma fithers side is a fae the areav

  • what language is this ? :S sry im German

  • @altermann555 It's 'Scot's English' - specifically a regional dialect called 'Doric', spoken in North-East Scotland. Old Blind Dogs sing almost everything in Doric.

  • I'm sure it teaches non-dialect scots

  • Lets here it for the Macdonald clan aswell, also these clans:

    Donald, Macguire, Macoman

  • Lets here it for the Morse clan

  • American country music fans - don't forget where the roots to your music come from.

  • Awesome. I love celtic music.

    Greetings of Canada.

  • Wspaniała muzyka !

  • @superraptor65 Thank you for including English reply this time, some of the words are really hard to figure out. I do study a bit of linguistic, so I can mostly make it out (and I can guess you are missing a word or two in that paragraph?), but sometimes it's really weird.

I do verily sayeth that in a manner given, me find oneself attracted to different shapes and flavours of ye english speak and the speak of thee islands. Thus, I find your response to be most of value to my peers and dos. :)

  • search "wir ain leid" this is a site which teaches scots

    guid luk!

  • @superraptor65 weir ain leid doesnt teach scots. It teachs the equivalent of queen's english.

  • @superraptor65 now ,I can understand this "scots" you are talking in. But I'll be damned if I'd ever try to speak or write in it. Looks like pretty difficult version of english to me, but it looks mighty. I can almost imagine those sturdy, hard-hearted lowlanders (or shall I say lollaners?) talking like this with Britons and spreading fear and respect just by their language. :) In other words, it looks AWESOME.

  • @Illsteward ta fur the coamint! scots 's akshully a deerint leid fae soothron,('s aulder tae)scots hus been screivd is a teucht leid bi' ootlins, onyquhiys 's guid yeli'e oor lollan leid! quhin a wis wee a wis punisht fur speikin it it skuil quhin a wis a wean

    OR IN ENGLISH

thank you for the comment!scots is actually a different langauge from english(its older to)scots has been described as a tought language by foriengers, when i was lillt i was punished for speaking this at school

  • Music doesn't get much better then this!

  • Augh! A most excellent jig! Much kudos to ya!

  • I'm an American and I've figured out, or been able to look up every phrase or word except one (which I THINK I've figured out ). I listen to a lot of Scottish folk music so I wasn't TOO lost but the word "ptlairchie" has me stumped. I take it to mean a great fright (much like the word "pfleg". Is this correct? Thank you. BTW, great great song.

  • @Rikki0 Why the fuck would we know? Do you think scottish people actually talk like this nowadays?

  • @Pawnbroker00 I don't recall specifically asking you to be the one to reply. I was thinking more along the lines of someone who might be familiar with old Scottish. I'll just scratch you off that list, okay? Thanks for the courteous reply.

  • @Pawnbroker00 YES

  • @Rikki0 aye yer richt ! an tae quhit pawnbroker saes, hees wrang! we dae tauk li'e in th' sang! its ca'd "scots" anither leid fae soothron(am a lollaner, sae ye ken,an scots s' ma first leid) good luck translating that!

    greetins fae scoatland!

  • @superraptor65 I need to learn to talk like the Scots. Don't have Scottish blood, but I'm not surprised that I wish I was Scottish. Best I can do is learn the Scottish accent. Know anything that could help me do that?

  • @superraptor65 Thank you for your kind reply, ruperraptor. Actually I did understand the reply as I listen to a lot of Scottish music. But I have to admit "soothron" has me thrown, heh. And greetings my friend, from Texas.

  • @Rikki0 soothron+english/english language

  • @superraptor65 Thank you again, superraptor. I'll check out that site you listed. I go to as many Renaissance Festivals as I can, and being a pilot I can make a lot of them. I've always used an Irish accent for my character as it seems to come natural to me. I'm careful not to overdo the accent like most. But I might like to try Scots though it may be harder. However, you might not want "Old Agachak" associated with your country, heh. He's something of a blackguard.

  • @kingbilgames Yeah, but In My Defens is the motto of Scotland, is it not?

  • that is a brilliant song i absolutely love it and i love how its got a story behind it and that its clearly written from the heart

  • I understood a lot of it. Sounds like norwegian.

    I'm Norwegian XD

  • Wow, that's some old Scots usage there! I live about 15 miles from Harlaw and still had to look up some of the words (eg. 'ilka' = every, 'neistan' = second (although 'neist' more literally means next).

  • @ThorimarDuggan hahahahaha

  • @Brady2k10 I agree to the extent that nothing any Scot does today should have any relevance to these past conflicts, but you english do have a lot to answer for in history, especially in your atrocities against Scottish and Irish. You were kinda douches, so who can blame a Scot for taking pride in a song about their ancestors kicking the crap out of your oppressive ancestors?

  • its not really highland vs lowland...a lot of times there were members of the same clan fightin eachother and some clans were considered highland or gaelic and lowland or scots and different times..or some sect of the clan may have lived in highlands while another sect may have lived in the lowlands

ooooooo good one. Wanna try again and actually get a good insult in there this time? Apparently I got a good one in last time ;)

  • The way they speak sounds almost like a Norwegian dialect

  • @rbkfan200 What'dya mean by that exactly?

  • @bacon70722 You would be able tae hear it if ya had been familiar with the dialect

  • @rbkfan200 ya, he be rite

  • @rbkfan200 wahteryee talkinabut?

  • @bacon70722 The North East Scottish Doric accent (in which the song was written) does have similarities with Norwegian in its pronounciations.

This is possibly because of Norwegian settlement in the North East around the 10th century leaving a residual linguistic effect.

  • @chrisbenedictus Oh i see, well i guess that explains it then, cheers.
