its not about being rich or poor? its about child labor and human trafficking.. while one child living in america is having a normal day, another in asia is having a normal day, which for him means making the other childs shoes. it has nothing to do with being rich or poor, although it is clear the boy on the left is privilaged and the boy on the right is not. the main focus is slavery, child slavery at that. and some of the things we buy cost more than we realize- childrens blood and innocence.

it may be an attempt to show, using the juxtaposition between a poor and rich persons life, how the things we believe that we need are often only desires. With how little those on the left side have, it begs the question whether any of the things on the right side are necessities at all. It shows the corrupting power materialism inflicts on the wealthy.
