Sitting on the banks of the river Wear

Watching all the ships sailing past the pier

  • Wonderful Roger Whittaker!!!

  • Regardless of the words, Durham is on the river Wear, maybe poetic licence was used! And I'm not sure Newcastle is the closest port, Sunerland is a tad closer I think!

  • river tyne is newcastle get it right

  • That's correct chap, and the mouth of the River Tyne was used as a naval shipping area during World War 2, ships that left via the Tyne estuary included HM battleship King George V, HM cruiser Bonaventure, and home fleet destroyers such as HMS Ashanti and HMS Fame. If you listen to the song you will hear him talking of his dad leaving on one of the naval ships. The river Tyne was the nearest shipping port to Durham being only about a 20 minute drive away. Sorry, this had to be said.

  • Now this is what i call music, not those crap they're churning out now.

  • Thanks for the great memories!
