Regardless of the words, Durham is on the river Wear, maybe poetic licence was used! And I'm not sure Newcastle is the closest port, Sunerland is a tad closer I think!
That's correct chap, and the mouth of the River Tyne was used as a naval shipping area during World War 2, ships that left via the Tyne estuary included HM battleship King George V, HM cruiser Bonaventure, and home fleet destroyers such as HMS Ashanti and HMS Fame. If you listen to the song you will hear him talking of his dad leaving on one of the naval ships. The river Tyne was the nearest shipping port to Durham being only about a 20 minute drive away. Sorry, this had to be said.

My intentional monde green is, "...I remember daddy walking out the door, he said I ain't spending no more time around that whore.."
I love Whittaker but I just can't help lampooning it.

yes but durham town (city) is actually on the river wear!! port of sunderland about the same distance as port of newcastle
How about this new verse -
When I was a boy I'd shed a tear
Sitting on the banks of the river Wear
Watching all the ships sailing past the pier
So much better
