  • BEST IDINA PERFORMANCE EVER!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! :D

  • This is actually beautiful!

  • has anybody not listened to the orcestra they seem to be running away with the song it sounds very rushed. any thoughts

  • How CRAP is that new girl!! Not a patch on Kristin, poor Idina she must have been going out of her mind lol!!

    Idina is AMAZEBALLS!! xxx

  • @natell1983 On the other hand, Helen must have been relieved to be given someone like Kerry after Idina.. Lol

  • She kinda cracked or something on the "deserves" riff. Common Idina, hit that 2nd "bring me down" for once, please? D:

And I'm suprised there was no roaring of the crowd as she went up. People usually go insane (i find it annoying, but still).

  • I love Idina. But I think out of all Elphabas, the technique she used to sing Defying Gravity is the most vocally straining of all.

  • @AimlessSky I agree. The other Elphabas sound beautiful yet they don't sound like they're forcing themselves. I LOVE Idina's original interpretation but she's going the end up killing her throat.

  • @17DefyingGravity you're right! I saw her and I love love love idina just not in wicked... :S she produces some tat performances at times but I have to say this may be one of her best! Unlike the Tonys which was questionable but hey she's human. Kerry however..... She just never fails! Absolutely incredible :) My fave is Rachel Tucker, she's so good and hardly anyone gives her enough credit!

  • have you got her last defying gravity?

  • Comment removed

  • @KristinandIdinagirl no she did that on her second to last show on Broadway :)

  • @spazycatfish Okay. So, this was in the West End? Oh, I get it now. Thanks. :)

  • @KristinandIdinagirl that was on broadway this is london

  • @coreyavefl2009 I realized that. I was kind of confused for a moment! Thanks!

  • @KristinandIdinagirl you’re welcome

  • Please people. This is amazing. Stop comparing. All Elphaba's are amazing and Idina is the original and made the character what it is. She is the original and no one can change that. I know everyone has their opinions but this performance is outstanding. You have no idea how hard it is to sing non-stop during act one, then get lifted up to a giant height screaming your lungs out while making sure you hit the right notes. It's a truly challenging song and an amazing effort by Idina :) x

  • I love Idina. BUT I hate extremists:

    1) the dumb shits who go round watching her videos and then leaving awful comments. It's like, why watch it in the first place?

    2) the peoplewho won't let anyone have an opinion, and are overly defensive of Idina. The people who won't accept any other Elphies, regardless of their talent, simply because she was the original.

Yeah, she's awesome, but if the show wasn't still awesome without her, it wouldn't have carried on for years since she left.

  • @wickedexpert It happens with all popular musicals. The Idina worship is nothing compared to the MAFIA... err MCIFA and Phantom fans

  • @MenaceFan What is MAFIA and MCIFA?

  • @wickedexpert You hit the nail on the head! That really annoys me as well!

I hate the over-defensive fans who criticise everyone else for having a different preference. They say they like Julia Murney better or Kerry Ellis better whoever and their reply is "Are you nuts?! Idina is better! You should like her since she is the original!" -_-

I really like Idina, no doubt, but there are other Elphabas who have had to fit into her shoes and they don't get any credit whatsoever. **

  • @wickedexpert ** Idina is my second favourite but Willemijn is my first favourite. Does that make me weird or not a true Wicked fan for liking someone else? I am a true Wicked fan as I love Wicked, aside those who have taken over from Idina.

I also agree about the idiots who just want to bash Idina. Perosnally it's the defensive fans I don't like just like you said.

  • @boffinme80 Idina is my personal favorite, but I love them all. There is not one Elphaba that I don't like. Idina, Eden, and Kerry are my favorites but they are all so talented.

  • I really hate how poeple think she is the best just because she is the original, that doesnt make any sense. I mean sure shes awesome, but I just feel like she isnt doing anything to their full potential.

  • SO much power! She may not have the conventional "pretty" voice but her voice is just leaking with power and emotion...IMO I'd rather have a singer who may hit some faulty notes here and there but still give a million pounds of power then a singer who is pitch perfect and sound like a dud

  • WHERE IS THE LAST PERFORMANCE??

  • @Lachanze1 She never played her last performance, bacause she fell through a hole... just search here on you tube, "idina fell through a hole", and you'll get the whole story:)

  • Wow ! I am amazed by this performance !

To be honest, I do love Idina's Elphaba (both acting and singing), though I think she sounded a little flat sometimes on the climax of "Defying Gravity". She is much more powerful on "The Wizard and I" and "No Good Deed" (she gives me goosebumps on "No Good Deed")

But for her last day in the role, she gave everything she had within her on "Defying Gravity", and indeed, I definitely think it's one of her best !

I really would have loved to see her !

  • woww this is really fast isn't it?

  • @ChocoboEmperor all the actors deserve an award because its hard to do shows like that 8 times a week, and u may not think its hard work , but it is, and its stressful, and i give them tons of props so shut it.

  • @sportc410 It's not that hard to do it, even if it's 8 times a week, when you're as skilled in a role as she is at Elphaba, you generally know what you're doing and can find it easy, and if you voice is as reliable as Idina's, then you're sorted, hence why she was asked back to do the part at London too (Y)

  • @sportc410 i agree. And the fact that ALL elphaba's have lives besides wicked, it makes for a pretty busy scheduale.

  • um you make no sense..

  • i don't think its necessary to explain WHY she deserves it when it is blatantly obvious

  • Because she deserved it you dumb fuck

  • because glinda was a really easy role for Kristin..

Idina put a lot of work into Elphaba

  • I don't like this Glinda. Krisitn and Idina were perfect together

  • I agree with you in that respect, What I meant to say was that Idina Menzel in the first act seems alot more naive in singing and in acting, making her change into act 2 much more noticable. I definately think that shes mature, I just think shes a more lovable elphie than kerry ellis is.

  • Got chills at 3:43. This really is the best performance from her in my opinion. that "kiss me goodbye" the "down" riff at 7:30 are evidence lol.

  • Im sorry but something sounds weird with her voice...

  • now this is the idina we all love, she sounds amazing here!

  • wow thats all i can say wow

  • I've always thought that Idina is the greatest Elphaba. She might shout a bit. But, it's all in the exciment. Like, she originated the role.

  • o.O who's playing Glinda? When I first heard it, I though someone was speeding it up so it sounded like a chipmunk.

  • Haha... I know what you mean when I first heard her I was like ummm? o_O

  • i honestly think idina strains her voice cause you can clearly hear it in her performances

  • listen to some of her early ones. the ones in 2003 are so amazing i love those.

  • Okay, that is definately not Kristin with her....

    haha.

  • This was London. Plus Kristin was already gone when it was Idina's last.

  • If I was Idina I would not be sad cuz I know I can sing it anytime and I have the voice to sing it!!!

  • i would be sad becuz im leaving the play perminately.

  • not permanently she could come back in the future and possibly the movie.

  • like when she broke her ribs she left for a year or two and then came back

  • Idina is never returning to Wicked. She has stated many times she's done. Especially now that she's halfway through a pregnancy and is soon to be a mother.

  • hew, people stop complaining in comments on these videos. comment it if you like it, if you don't like it, don't comment it.

personally, i think this is really good.

obviously she's one of the best, because she's the original. different elphabas have different singing voices. idinas voice sounds pure and sweet, whereas kerry ellis makes her voice sound witchy. everyone is entitled to their own opinions. now if you have nothing good to say, then fuck offf, right?

    (L) this

  • Dudem speak the true. I'm so with you. I personally adore Idina Menzel. She's like inspiration.

  • @spideyftw How does being the original make her the best?

  • @hoibolloi Because she made the character what it is. She may not give the best performances all the time but she really is incredible to have developed this character.

  • @spideyftw OK i completely diagree - and your basically saying nobody can have a different opinion otherwise they will be penalized for having one - but here goes - other people are allowed their opinions and i think Idina is incredibly over rated - Just becasue she is the original is does not make her the best at all. I saw her 3 times and all three she just screamed every word. my own opinion is that kerry is a better singer - Saw kerry many times before and after her broadway run and she

  • omg. this was perfect. her "kiss me goodbye" sounded more witchy then she has ever sounded before. and the ending was phenomenal. absolutely perfect performance.

  • Her "me down" to the ending is absolutley fabulous. People trash her but I don't think I have heard a more clear and powerful ending than this one right here. Plus she is in tune, so many Elphabas are flat as a pancake on those last few notes, and yes, even just being flat makes it so much easier to sing. Idina Menzel is AMAAAAAZING

  • "flat as a pancake"

    NICE

    =D

that was great, and SOOOOOO true!!!!

  • She isn't british, she's australian

  • her "kiss me goodbye" and "ever gonna bring me down" both gave me chills. Not even kidding. I shiver when I hear them lol

  • I dont think kerry is better, i think they're different. Kerry has a very dark tone, which is reflected in her acting. Whereas Idina has a much more childlike (not bad. i think shes fantastic) tone, and her acting is more loveable. She's very intense in parts, but you really like her character, she seems less like a woman than kerry.

  • umm im sorry but Kerry dosent matches to Idina menzel talent!

Kerry insn't bad but isn't great!

    ok idina is!

  • her last isnt on here anymore

    can someone post :)

    like her last last

  • Yeah I REALLY want to see her last last

Does anyone know, does she "break down" like Kristin Chenoweth did? That was really heart-touching

  • no she doesnt. she doesnt realise its going to be her last show though. in her last one she craks her ribs at the end of the show which prevents her from finishing the show and her contract. i think on that night its her 3rd to last show or something. with kristen she knew it was her last show, but yeah agree that was really heart touching i love watching clips of it on here. also idina and kristen had a really special friendship .. im not sure about these 2. :)

  • idina broke her ribs in her second to last show :)

  • Love Idina, hate the Glinda.

  • OMG

  • The musical would never hasen't been the same since she left...she's the only Elphaba for the musical.

    Idina ROCKS!!!!

  • What I ment to say is: Has never been the same...darn typo's

  • I cannot stand this Galinda.

  • Yeah she sounds too...well..Idk weird(then again I lived off this musical by listening to Kristin Chenoweth's voice)so another Galinda is..weird to me....same with another person playing Elphaba...No one can match Idina.

  • Agreed on the last few parts starting with the Down.

  • she's literally the worst glinda I've ever heard in my life.

  • im not a fan of the british accent that glinda has.

  • is this the one she falls in or is it the evening 1?

  • sorry, i see this comment is very old and probably forgotten about, but just to clarify: idina broke her ribs in her 2nd to last show on broadway. this is her last show in london, which she did after she did the rent movie :)

  • dont u think its the other way round. she was gr8 on broaway but not so much wen in the west end

  • i dunno when i wat h the london stuff she just sounds better there to me

well shes amazing anywhere so it doesnt really matter

  • her best performance ever

  • this is better then idinas evenin performance! i was at he evenin x

  • That riff on 'Down' bloody amazing!

That hold :) Thats why we love Idina!

    Thanks for this :D

  • full on gives me shivers. like always.

i saw this show for the 2nd time, last wednesday and diane pilkington is so much better than this glinda!!

and though kerry ellis is amazing, i wish i'd seen it with idina. she is amazing.

if i was half as good as her, i'd be happy. thanks for posting this.

  • Im the same!

I saw Kerry and Dianne two weeks ago today at the matinee, and although i love Kerry, I just think theres something extra special about Idina's potrayal of Elphaba.

And as for Dianne, shes a legend, absolutely hysterical! x

  • lolol no you didn't

  • this is one of her bests!

  • this is one of her bests!

  • Holy shit she held that note at the end pretty darn well!!!

  • I honestly don't care for this Glinda at all. Kristen is just amazing. I personally think whichever Glinda this is, overdoes it.

  • i wish she would go back on :( lodon, new york, chicago....dont care just want her to go

  • I agree with the comment below me- the first down gave me goosebumps.

  • OMG that first "down" was absolutely beautiful <3

  • i totally agree!

  • OMG that first "down" was absolutely beautiful <3

  • I think Idina gasps because that's just her thing. It's her particular singing style.

  • actually, she used to smoke when she was FIRST in rent. if you listen to the opening night of rent "take me or leave me", you can tell, cuz her voice isn't nearly as clear as it is now. she has asthma because she smoked, but she quit a LONG time ago, that's why her voice got SOOOO much better since rent.

  • omg sorry i know this comment was left a while ago, but im seriously, it doesnt matter what anybody else says, idinas hugest fanzel everrrr, and i didnt know that!!! i just did some research and thats true!!!!

thank god she quit or her voice would be like daphnes now!!! :o

  • haha. not to worry. i leave replies to comments left years ago! haha. besides, i login everyday, so i can't miss it! lol.

i am soooo glad she quit too. she has such a beautiful voice and i'm glad she realized that it was bad for her career and stopped.

  • Dude, she didn't quit. She wanted to pursue her singing carrer. And Idina Menzel will always be awesome. So, please don't compare her with Daphne.

  • i'm talking about the fact that she quit smoking.

  • i cannot believe she used to smoke. i mean i believe you but it seems to me like idina would never do something like that to her voice. she respects herself too much. =)

  • true, but i dont think she truly valued her voice as much as she does now back then, because she was just a wedding singer. she probably realized its definitely something she needed to stop doing now that she was in a broadway show. (so she was still doing it during the workshop? does anyone know how long the show was on bway before she quit?)

    :)

  • The reason why Idina gasps is because she has asthma. She can't help it. I also agree ShelBell540, Kristin is soo much better!!! I LOVE IDINA!!!:)

  • Actually, Idina has never said she has asthma. Until she says something about it, it's a rumor.

  • WOW.

She is my idol!! So incredible.

  • The girl who's playing Glinda really sux. KRISTIN IS SOOOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER!!! Her voice blends so much better with Idina, too.

  • only becoz there both american!

  • why does everyone bitch about the gasping? I mean, if you were pulling off the show stopper that requires the singing this song requires you'd be a lil nervous and takin lots of deep breaths too! Furthermore, none of you who bitches about the gasping IS doing the aforementioned so you really not in the place to critizice. I did an open mic night thing in front of ten friggin people and THAT was nerve-wracking (and I was singing a friggin Bob Dylan song cuz I have no range!) U try it!

  • Arguing that she's nervous is dumb, DUH! But every other Elphaba sings this song without gasping, are they not nervous? I don't think so. Idina just has some issues. ( and don't think i'm bashing ,because i love idina.)

  • I LOVE the gasping in this song. This is the song where Elphaba takes her first flight, becomes Wicked... defies everyone and declares she is Wicked. Think of Elphaba.. and how nervous she is in this moment.. the gasping is perfect and really makes the nerves obvious.. its perfect and so is Idina.

  • I guess it's a matter of personal preference, personally i find it annoying and I know I'm not the only one... Oh and also, she declares she's "wicked" in No Good Deed, not defying gravity.

  • Alright, I'll admit it. You're a social retard with no life. I wasn't being rude and I wasn't acting anything. You said that she declares herself wicked in his song... Where are the lyrics that say this? NO WHERE! Morrible declares her wicked. So why don't you get off your computer and go make some friends.

  • You're right, but I think whe meant that Elphaba accepts the title of "Wicked Witch" in No Good Deed

  • he meant that*

  • absolutely amazing

  • This is seriously the best Defying Gravity I have EVER heard. Idina is such a legend..

  • does any1 hav her last ever defying gravity (30.12.06 evening performance) cos it used 2 b on here and it was incredible. this one is incredible 2!

  • I do. Its in my videos! It was on my old account but it got deleted but now its back! Yay!

  • OMG thanx so much! u are a star!

  • i was on this show. gaaah<3

  • Do You Have The Full Show?

  • the full show is on youtube

  • what, her full last?!

  • the full show is on google type in wicked broadway act 1 and then act 2

  • Idina is the best Elphaba ever!

This is her best performance in my opinion.

    ^_^

  • Victoria...?

    Rofl.. No.

  • Everyone can have his own opinion ;) Don't act so childish.

  • i think anyone who says that some other elphaba is better than idina is seriously disturbed.

  • OMG... silly ;)

  • It actually wasnt Victoria

  • OMG YES!!!

  • how could this be her last matinee and still have another defying gravity to sing when she fell through the trap door during a matinee??

  • This was in london, she fell on broadway.

  • oh ok, lol maybe i should have listened to glinda's accent then...

  • I loved her first bring me down!

  • Sweet Oz she's incredible...her riff at the end was great and she held the last note forever!!

  • oh. my. gosh. that glinda. ARGH!!!!

  • idina is aweosme! i saw kerry on october 19th!! INCRENDIBLE!

  • amazing as always!

  • i love idina i cant wait to see wicked on the 26th october it is gonna be amazing!

  • I love Idina but the freaking Glinda is really obnoxious!

  • As for her nerves, yes after 3 years of performing the same role, she can still be nervous. She doesn't perform the same way every time and she is a very humble person who sometimes lets her nerves get the best of her. That's what makes Idina so loved by all of her fans. She's not always perfect. She's human, and that makes her very real to the viewers.

  • Wow, how did this become about Idina's gasping? She doesn't gasp at all in this performance. It's actually one of her best performances. If you don't like her gasping, get over it. No one is forcing you to listen to her.

  • damn it, i meant to say "many theories as to why idina *gasps*" not why she belts, sorry

  • there's alot of different theories as to why idina belts, mine is that she frequetly readjusts her placemeent by inhaling so she can feel her nasal passage way, i think that's they most musical response, though i'm pretty sure she's asthmatic, and smokes, which also probably don't help her breathing.

  • Um, I'm pretty darn sure Idina has asthma, which is only part of the reason she "gasps". And it's a very vocally demanding role, ya' know. The "gasping" got worse during the end of her run. I'd have to guess that her voice is incredibly forced through her throat and not her diaphraghm. Creates an electric, belty sound. A lot of people have this habit, myself included but I'm only 15 so... whatever.

Doesn't matter, asthamtic or not, smoker or not, she's FREAKING AMAZING!

  • Haha I agree!!!!!!

  • Whoa why were the guards screaming lmfao

  • wow!

  • ok u 2!!!! i am like the biggest idina fan!! and she is not asthmatic!!! she was gasping because she was trying to get enough breath but she was actually taking in too much air!! and when she came to england she worked very hard with her singing teacher to get red of it and she has concoured it but sometimes she still does because ofd adrenoline or nerves!

  • you're meant to breathe through your mouth when you sing to get the most amount of air, you try to belt those notes without gasping but i suppose you probably wouldnt get them out seeing as you'd be breathing through your nose.

  • "a habit for her to breathe through her mouth rather than her nose." ?????????????????

I am a musician and I can tell you, you do not take breaths through your nose when you sing! The correct way to breathe is through your mouth. And gasping when you breathe is just plain incorrect.... I wish I knew why she does it.

  • Idina's "gasping" only gave character to her performance as Elphaba. She rarely "gasps" when she is recording for an album or filming for a movie. Of course some people are going to criticize what could be misconstrude as her weakness...but we all know better.

  • They removed her gasping in soundtracks and movies. There aren't limitations when singing in a studiop and you have technology. Except on the Rent movie soundtrack, she gasps loads in one song I believe. Not that it's ever bothered me, I don't blame her, it's just a habit for her to breathe through her mouth rather than her nose.

  • You can hear her gasping in the Wicked Soundtrack, especially in Defying Gravity and The Wizard And I

  • I forgot the point she didn't gasp before Wicked.
