I woke up at 4 and for some reason thought of this song. It makes me tearful I remember when this was number one. I remember all sorts of things like Parsley, playschool, Bod, but I cant watch any of it without bursting into tears when I'm alone. I'm 43 and my girlfriend has a degenerative illness she's never going to recover from. We've fallen out of love. I've got a 16 year old stepdaughter who doesnt give a shit about me and I'm living without hope. The past is so beautiful.......
@MatthewOfLondon i often think of the good old days when times get hard, the simpler days of going out to play without a care in the world, coming home to mums tea on the table and the muppet show on TV. A lot of people regress back to child hood memories pal, this is the time were we felt the safest, wrapped up in our parents cotton wool hugs. I read your post mate and just wanted to say, be strong, chin up and there WILL be a brighter day sometime in the future..stay strong ;)
Such a shame Clive Dunn is not around anymore. A consumate professional who's addiction to alcohol and cocaine is sadly, pretty obvious from this TOTP performance. He had a follow up single called 'Second Cousin, Twice Removed' which bombed in the charts and signalled the end of his music career. He retired from public life and famously threw himself off the Humber Bridge. We will not see his like again. RIP 'Grandad' (Clive Dunn)
@Onariman48 he's about 91 now. he was just exceptionally good at playing old men when he was younger. in this vid he was about 55, but heavily made up, as he was in Dad's Army.
@Onariman48 - Clive Dunn has frequently played characters older than his actual age. He was only 51 here and performed this song one month before I was born!
My brother has set up an advice service for older people in the UK worried about getting through winter. One option he advocates is to go on Social Media sites (Facebook, Twitter etc.) under their own name & repeatedly post offensive, hateful & sectarian comments.
No danger is involved, no-one gets hurt, but the authorities will be OBLIGED to arrest & imprison them- all meals, heating, housing & healthcare will then be on the taxpayer for the next few months! Brilliant idea really.
I had this played at my father-in-law's funeral when he died aged 88 in 2005. Seemed appropriate for the grandkids and the times he lived in all those years ago.
i miss my grandad so much i am lucky enought to say that i never took him for granted and always loved him so much and when he died suddenly part of my heart died with him
Mr Dunn was not really an old-timer when this song was @ number 1 in the charts (back in the January of 1971). In fact, he was only 3 years older than I am now (I am 46, btw).
Love this song, always makes me sad. The idea that old people are so often undervalued, that their experience of life is considered as worth nothing to the younger generation in general. Life was so much simpler in past generations. What, though is wrong with people? This is an entirely lovely, innocent song. If only the simplicity of it could have an effect on those making comments (I'm referring to the language and negativity). Bask in the gentleness of the sentiment. As for racism - grow up!
went to St.Winnies in the early 70s..played in goal for our school...they might have had a choir but their football team was bobbins,,,I froze to death,,, waiting for something to do
I love this song, though my twin and I were just 2 yrs old in 1971...
My brother died two years ago and this reminds me of our childhood, when the world WAS simpler...
Crass comments posted by 16 year old Juan Macready are the puerile ravings of an attention seeking child, one who's not seen enough of life to yet fully comprehend what a repugnant little scrote his posts show him to be...
Dad's Army WASN'T racist...! The Stupid Boy is thinking of It Ain't Half Hot Mum. Now THAT was racist...!
Good old Clive Dunn . Hes doing his best to look like an old man , and he was very good at that , but in actual fact when this was done he wasnt that old at all.
he was acctually one of the younger members of the cast, in 1968 (when dads army started) he was 48 and in 77 when he finished he was 57, whilst the majority of other actors would probably be in late /early 60s / 70s..
Good old Lance Corporal Jones! "Mr. Mainwaring sir! I'd like to volunteer for thejob sir!" I love Clive Dunn, fav actor from Dad's Army, and it's a tough pick mind you, bless em all, the majority now long gone unfortunately; old, Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier, James Beck, Arnold Ridley, John Laurie, all splendid fellows, may they all rest in peace
this song is all about your grandad and i suppose i was too young to know my grandad as he died when i was 14, for me its my dad i think of when i hear this , he is 79 and well just the best dad you could have. we havent been best friends and we havent talked for hours and he is a private person but so far as dads go he did his very best for all his children and grandchildren and i am proud to call him my dad
juan macready could arrange to meet and then see if you can repeat all of your comments when your bollocks are down your throat you wouldnt stand a chance where i come from have some respect why does the world deserve an inbred like you
Dads Army was an absolute belter of a series no matter what year you starting watching it and no matter what age group you belong/belonged to. As for the degrading comments , its not worth lowering to. Probably one of the best casts ever assembled for a TV programme !
I first played this when my grandad sadly passed away and i misshim more than anything he was my life and could tell him anything now all i have is a rose bush to talk to
@teapot42 I have watched this archive footage [from 1971] of Mr Dunn singing the song "Grandad" and i did not hear him use the words 'you are too'. However, even if he did use those words, there is no reason to believe that he is a pervert/paedophile/nonce (whatever term you choose to use).
As regards the song "Grandad", no one would claim that it is one of the all-time classics ...... but it is a pleasant, MOR tune - which sold well over half-a-million copies in the UK, back in 1971.
My granddad was in Bomber Command during the war & very proud of it. However, in my bolshie youth phase (roughly 16-23) I would say he was a ‘war criminal’ for killing German civilians.
At his 70th birthday we had a garden party at our house & I decided it would be funny to drop an old TV onto proceedings from a skylight roof window- to “see how he liked being bombed without warning”. It injured 3 guests (one permanently scarred) & my granddad never spoke to me again- he died 5yrs later.
@RichardElden i think u should be thankful for dads army as this is what actualy happend in the 2nd war. clive dunn was playing his part. if u want to complain your 30 odd years too late. if it wasnt for the home guard we probably be speaking german. if u wanted that too happen go and join hittler in the ditch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can we all stop giving juan macready so much attention and just enjoy the song? Maybe one day when he's a grandad or when he's a bit older he'll start to realise what's wrong with what he's doing but, in all honesty, his insults aren't anything new and his childish vendetta against Clive Dunn made me laugh :p
time to chill out everyone and see the song for what it is...a novelty song written by bass guitar maestro herbie flowers for clive dunn. it's as simple as that. love and peace x
pcl40 i too used to this this song to my lovely Grandad, even though i was very young when he died i remember him so well.
its such a shame that the likes of people who write sad comments on here have no happy memories of their childhood. you really have to feel sorry for them.
Juan Macready, what a lot of hate you have in you little boy. You been on any of those student protests in London? Seeing as you have nothing better to do with your time, get yourself up to the front of the Police lines and i'll keep my fingers crossed that some big hairy arse copper strikes your swede with a massive baton.
I sang this to my grandfather.........and he cried and applauded..............who cares what Juan....whoever he is... says.......................... so many things have changed and many not, for the better, wouldn't you agree....... 'children should be seen and not heard,' being one off the top of my head....those were the days...XD
as a grandad of 11, my grandkids love me, and i them,we cuddle all the time, juan my friend, kids are the most precious things in life, you obviously have some severe family problems.wots up with you ,are you impotent.god bless children, our next generation
as a grandad of 11, my grandkids love me, and i them,we cuddle all the time, juan my friend, kids are the most precious things in life, you obviously have some severe family problems.were you adopted you sado
This is lovely, and it's a shame people can't enjoy it without sniping at eachother,or Clove Dunn,a very funny man,and this is a fine song. Some people,if they are like me,look to this sort of thing when they are missing people, and don't really want to be hearing about people wishing them Cancer etc. What is wrong with people?
He was about 50-55 when Dad's Army was made. He looked a older than he actually was and his character was supposed to be 10 or more years older than him.
Clive Dunn did do other things but not as much as many other actors.
I have no objection to people not liking him, it's just that JuanMacready isn't making any constructive comments, just being rude, ignorant, and not drawing the distinction between him and his character either.
By the way, when there wasn't anything on TV, we didn't watch it!
And Christopher Lee mostly played evil characters in films. Every actor has their specialites and clive's was an old man, he suits the character. I ain't here to have continuous cyber arguments on youtube.
Judging by Juan Macready's comments on other videos, he is a vitriolic thoughtless idiot!
If he hates this kind of thing, then why doesn't he just shove off and let the people who do appreciate it get on with their lives without this twonk acting like this.
Dad's Army was watched by 18million views at its peak... noone was forcing them; they enjoyed it!
Maybe he just is upset because he couldn't text in and vote for who he wanted to be in the part.
Clive Dunn was one of the unrecognised geniuses of UK comedy and as Corporal Jones in Dad's Army, sheer brilliance! I don't want to make enemies but Juan Macready you are an ignorant boor.
@JuanMacready Your profile shows you are 16, i,ve had sex that has lasted almost as long as you've been alive. Dad'a Army was long before your time. There was nothing racist about Clive unless you mean the jokes in the show about the Nazi's. Even i am not old enough top remember WW2 but i had relations who faught and even died in it so don't you go on with all your shite. the show was regarded as funny. what do you watch? the Simpsons i bet and you'll think that shites funny eh!
@alecahauf well most people do think the simpsons is funny... well, people under 45 anyway. Thats why its been going for over two decades with no sign of stopping but ah well, i guess it's a generational thing. This was quite humerous in a nice way. nice song too. a differnt time
Juan Macready, you wish death on a 90 year old man who spent 4 years of his life in a prisoner of war camp and did little else except make a living in comedies and children's shows? You call him a cunt? Well child I hope you do some growing up quickly. If not I hope I bump into you in a pub when you are old enough and that I get to hear you spout this shit. You'll be trying to pick your teeth up with broken fingers. But of course away from your keyboard I am sure you are as quiet as a mouse.
@StChrissieboy I have not even read your comment, I just noticed you start Juan Maacready, don't get too excited about this moron, he travels around YT, and makes bad comments, simply to upset people, he has a serious problem, he obviously is some weird loner, who likes to gain attention, by saying stupid things, so as you say, away from his keyboard, he's a mouse.
Does he say "cunts" at 50. It's actually pretty well documented that he managed to have sexual intercourse with all of those girls sat around him over a three day period.
clive dunn was my favourite character from dads army!
jaun you must be a very dour, damp & dank person who sadistically sucks the fun out of other people because you cant so much as raise a smile from those around you.
@JuanMacready dads army was great, clive dunn didnt like to over act, he was told to by the people who made it, and then he realised why, people find it funny.
@JuanMacready why are you using bad language, whats your problem with dads army, it obviosly was funny for them to have make so many. and why did you watch this if you dont like him?
Well he's done more in his life than you will ever do in yours, Yes everyone is entitled to their own views but yours? Ain't worth listening too, all due to because you're a keyboard warrior with nowt better to do than troll on the 'Net. And clive dunn, a talentless overacting c*nt? I'll give you my list, wayne rooney, cherly lloyd, simon cowell, well, pretty much every modern celebrity is one. Can't compare to the old ones! You, thingy, are a complete and utter ponce. End off.
That's how his character was scripted to act like, just because he acted like that in one show doesn't mean he's like that every day, so there's no need to call him a cunt is there ¬.¬
So you wish death on a man who fought for our country and freedom in the Second World War that you take for granted today? Most actors didnt give a rats arse to be in it, but clive did. I'd like to see you do what he's done in his life. Grow up!
@Olliguer David Jason is six years older than Ian Lavender and they can do wonders with make up. He convincingly played an old man in Porridge when he was only in his mid-thirties, the only way you could see he wasn't really old was by his hands.
@JuanMacready clive dunn is a british icon who deserves more respect than calling him a cunt! what have you ever done in this life to make yourself better than him, it is about time you grew up.
Thank you so much for this. Way back, it reminded my Grandmother of us girls singing to Grandad. Brings tears everytime. He has long since past. I have the record. Just nothing to play it on. Thanks!
i used to sing this song to my granddad with my sister in my nanna's back yard when we were little

What is wrong with people?
neiltreloar 1 year ago
Juan how would you like it when your 90 and someone saying that they hope you get cancer :L
MrDeathlinger 1 year ago
He was about 50-55 when Dad's Army was made. He looked a older than he actually was and his character was supposed to be 10 or more years older than him.
Clive Dunn did do other things but not as much as many other actors.
I have no objection to people not liking him, it's just that JuanMacready isn't making any constructive comments, just being rude, ignorant, and not drawing the distinction between him and his character either.
By the way, when there wasn't anything on TV, we didn't watch it!
alvamiga 1 year ago
@TheDiddlysquat
And Christopher Lee mostly played evil characters in films. Every actor has their specialites and clive's was an old man, he suits the character. I ain't here to have continuous cyber arguments on youtube.
BOT101st 1 year ago
Judging by Juan Macready's comments on other videos, he is a vitriolic thoughtless idiot!
If he hates this kind of thing, then why doesn't he just shove off and let the people who do appreciate it get on with their lives without this twonk acting like this.
Dad's Army was watched by 18million views at its peak... noone was forcing them; they enjoyed it!
Maybe he just is upset because he couldn't text in and vote for who he wanted to be in the part.
alvamiga 1 year ago 30
@alvamiga There were only three TV channels then so of course people were forced to watch this unfunny, racist crap.

@Olliguer No it isn't, racists need to STFU as a metter of urgency, nobody cares.

Clive Dunn was one of the unrecognised geniuses of UK comedy and as Corporal Jones in Dad's Army, sheer brilliance! I don't want to make enemies but Juan Macready you are an ignorant boor.

@Reichenback09 Clive Dunn was a talentless unfunny prick who ruined Dad's Army.
JuanMacready 1 year ago

It's actually pretty well documented that he managed to have sexual intercourse with all of those girls sat around him over a three day period.

jaun you must be a very dour, damp & dank person who sadistically sucks the fun out of other people because you cant so much as raise a smile from those around you.
just a guess ;

Clive Dunn was a very unfunny cunt who overacted in that dated sitcom Dad's Army.
JuanMacready 1 year ago
@JuanMacready dads army was great, clive dunn didnt like to over act, he was told to by the people who made it, and then he realised why, people find it funny.

@AccidentallyOPurpose Dad's Army was crap. Dunn was an unfunny prick.
JuanMacready 1 year ago
@JuanMacready why are you using bad language, whats your problem with dads army, it obviosly was funny for them to have make so many. and why did you watch this if you dont like him?
AccidentallyOPurpose 1 year ago
@JuanMacready The only prick seems to be you. Dad's Army was the funniest thing to ever be shown on the BBC & Clive Dunn as Coporal Jones was ace.
Andi090386 1 year ago
@Andi090386 Dad's Army is fucking crap and Clive Dunn was a talentless overacting cunt. I hope he will die very soon.
JuanMacready 1 year ago
@JuanMacready
End off.

@BOT101st Clive Dunn's talentless unfunny overacting ruined Dad's Army, which wasn't very funny anyway.
JuanMacready 1 year ago
@JuanMacready

Grow up!

David Jason would have only been a couple of years older than Ian Lavender (Pike). What use would that have been? You are a penis!
Olliguer 11 months ago
@Olliguer David Jason is six years older than Ian Lavender and they can do wonders with make up. He convincingly played an old man in Porridge when he was only in his mid-thirties, the only way you could see he wasn't really old was by his hands.

@JuanMacready clive dunn is a british icon who deserves more respect than calling him a cunt! what have you ever done in this life to make yourself better than him, it is about time you grew up.
