  • Tusk Offroad :)

  • thanks man you just saved me $300

  • thanks for the video! very clear!

    it s a ktm 250 exc-f 2011 old model

  • hi,

i speak poor english but i'll try!

i broke a bolt (the one right side below), the bolt that closes the cover of the oil filter. I drilled it out but i had to drill a little bit in an angle... plus when drilling i got a felling i drilled to far, like i drilled through something?!

now there's oil leaking through this hole (where the bolt is in), i am thinking of sealing this with heat resistant silicone.

Do you know if it is possible that i drilled through something? what's behind it?..

  • hey, is this changing the oil for trani too? how does this engine work?

  • @meda789 - yes

  • @RockyMountainATVMC so is that y there is 2 filters? or just for extra sercurity?

  • @meda789 - It is all the same oil shared between engine. it is just extra protection.

  • my ktm 450 xcrw is street legal and everytime i ride it on the road it eats about 1/4 of the oil, is that normal?

  • @xcrwRider55 - that doesn't sound normal to me. How many miles on the bike? Sounds like it may be time for new rings.

  • same for sxf ?

  • @thokih1 - Yes depending on the year.

  • Hi, I have the 520 version of that bike and it came back from an official KTM garage today, they did a complete maintenance. When i check my oil window i can see the oil level is about 1/4 filled. I just rided it for 10 miles. Should i pour in more oil? Very nice video by the way.

  • @24000RPM - as long as you can see it in the window you are fine. I like to have mine on the higher side though. thanks!

  • @RockyMountainATVMC Thanks a lot!

  • @24000RPM when its hot it will fill up the sightglass but when its cold and on level ground it should be just a little bit below half way. you dont want to overfill these engines.

  • @EvansAutoShop - Just a roll of shop towels. You can get them anywhere (auto store, walmart, etc.)

  • does the ktm 450 sx-f have a frs motor?

  • @CLIFFBMX - yes depending on the year - 2007 went to a new motor on the SX.

  • Hey there, thanks a lot for the video. I have a question; do ktm RFS clutches usually have a bit of drag on them when you have it in gear with clutch in? My bike wants to creep forward. Thanks.

  • Is this gear oil

  • @njs97 - Motor oil and gear oil is all shared on this bike. So it is motor oil that also lubricates the transmission.

  • Nice vid, thanks. But how do you know how hard you tighten stuff ??

  • @MrKnaberaps - I have done it a lot. I would suggest investing in a torque wrench.

  • would this be the same on a 2010 250sxf

  • Do you check the oil in the sight glass with the bike on the kick stand or with the bike straight up and down?

  • @Buckleycw - straight up and down - balanced.

  • it reccomends in the service manual every 100 and it only gets used on roads about 1/4 throttle thought i should have mentioned that

  • holy crap you change it every 10 hours my 300ex gets changed every 100 or so

  • @danielmtb - wow! 100 hours. Remind me not to buy a used 300ex from you:)

  • thx helped a lot... plz upload a video about carb ajustment for the motor.. :)

  • what does rfs mean???? is it just a cool name ktm gave to there motors or it it some kind of oil pump system?

  • @Kawasaki8002 - RFS = Racing Four Stroke. Just a cool name they gave to that specific motor design.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC

    thanks i was just wondering

  • At @1:58 what kind of spray is that? that one you use for cleaning the stuff

  • @cocaTcola - just a contact or carb cleaner.

  • on a 2 stroke there isnt an oil filter for the tranny oil right?

  • @ktmlover07 - correct

  • How often do you do this? Thats a lot of stuff

  • @higocuyum - every bike is a little different. Refer to your manual. I do mine every 10 hours or so.

  • how often do you change the filter? what oild do you recommend? thank you so much for the video it heloed a bunch

  • @druminsk8 - every 7-10 hours, depending on how hard I ride it. I change the filter every time (every other sometimes). I use oil the manual recomends or equivilent.

  • the long screen is VERY easy to drop in the engine , watch yours and use a long allen wrench to hold it in place until it "pop" into place

  • great video for me, a beginner A+

  • i lost my owners manual canany one tell me how much oil a 525 s needs

  • Comment removed

  • @chitot98 1.2 litres mate

  • the book says use the 10 50 oil but my mechanic who's worked on motorcycles for over 20 years says it's not necessary. what do you think?

  • I would stick with the manufacturer's recomendations. Why not?

  • well he said you could actually use like 10 40 which is a big price difference. and that's what we ran in my yz 450 and we've had that for six years with no problems. i was just wondering what you suggest. but thanks.

  • i have a 2008 250sxf and i was unsure with which way the long oil screen should go in. does the big opening on the oil screen go in first or the smaller hole?

  • I am not certain what you mean. i suggest refering to your manual.

  • I have been filling the oil to the half way mark on the window, what do you recommend? Thanks for making this video, it helped.

  • that sounds good to me.

  • is this for a ktm sxf too??

  • it depends on the year and the size. If you have the RFS motor then yes. Watch the video and look at your motor and see if you have the same one.

  • how often should i change the oil

  • Refer to your manual for recomendations. I change mine every 3-4 rides.

  • when u change the oil can u just clean the oil screen not replace it?

  • the screen on the bottom?? yes, that is what we did. If you are refering to the oil filter then it depends on whether you have a reusable filter or not.

  • i just changed the oil on my ktm and i started it up and it clickes a little bit. is that cuz the now oil hasent run all the way through the engine so for a few minuts its gonna click a little bit?

  • I've never noticed a click when I have done it. Can you tell where it is coming from?

  • I can here it the most when I'm sitting on it. But I started it up and ran it for about 10 minuts after I changed the oil and it doesent do it anymore.

  • acctualy nevermind. i found that its coming from the silencer but its a quiet click. more of a higher pitch pop. probly why i havent niticed it berfore. but i looked at it and the engine it self isnt making any weird noises....now i just gotta figure out houdda get the fricken spark plug off so i can clean it. dont have the service manual yet and the owners manual dosent say how to get it off. found a service manual but still gotta order it.

  • awesome video, thanks

  • how do we know how tight 5 foot pounds is?

  • by using a tourqe wrench.

  • I dont get it when you say tighting to 5 foot pounds? i may sound dumb when i say that but im new to this kind of stuff.

and i never got a manual with the bike i got. Second Hand.

  • First off I suggest getting an owner's or service manual - it is well worth the investment. next, get a good torque wrench. 5 foot punds refers to how tight the bolt is. You don't want to over-tighten.

  • But i don't think the bike i have is a brand lol. it's to start me off at the moment untill i get a real dirt bike.

  • everything you own has a brand. it just may be a shitty brand. lol just look around the bike for names(try the frame).

  • Why does the manual reccomend filling the oil filter up w/ oil? Won't it get saturated when the engine runs? Thanks for any info.

  • It helps "prime" the pump supposedly. Whether or not it matters, I suggest following each detail in the manual. You can't go wrong with that.

  • Thanks!

  • very nice video :) its very helpfully

  • thank you sir for the very helpful vid.

    +1

  • THANK YOU! VERY HELPFUL VIDEO

  • Thank you very much about these videos, i have learned how to change piston on my yamaha yz250 and now i changed oils too, once more thank you! :)

  • Is it better to do with the motor hot or cold?

  • The oil drains a lot better if it is warm.

  • Changed it today

The bolts were awfully hard to take off, I'm afraid i ruined the allen head and the back discharge =(

  • Don't put them back on as tight as the last guy did.

  • Did that =)

Should I check the oil level with the bike hot or cold?

  • Refer to your manual, but usually warm.

  • if you running bike, turn it off and check oil level for atleast after 10 mins

  • Surprised he didn't prime the oil filter cavities - Service manual specifically states to lay bike on side and fill filter cavity approx half way with oil before dropping in filter. It can be a pain to do - wonder if I have been wasting my time doing it by the book?

  • I recommend following the directions in the manual to be safe.

  • What kind of spray do you use for clean??Like the magnetic plug?Thx :D very helpful video!

  • We used contact cleaner.

  • hello,

what year are those rfs motors?

    same process on the xcf's.....?

    thanks

  • If you have 2 oil filters, then you have the RFS motor.

  • Just posted a comment today - my service manual states that the oil cavity should be primed (fill half way) prior to dropping in the filter - have I been wasting my time priming the cavity? It is a pain to lay the bike over and do this. Thanks

  • After you rebuild your 2 stroke engine put the gaskets and seal do you actualy put an amount of oil in the engine before the Gas Air oil Mixture expoldes in the cranck case.

If yes, what is the amount and what type?

i saw your video on youtube,"very cool"

    i have a CR80R Honda

  • Hopefully nothing is exploding in your crank case. The explosion should take place on top of the piston. Anyway it is a good idea to lube the bearings and seals with oil during assembly. If you are doing a 2-stroke, use 2-stroke pre-mix.

  • great vid! how often should i change my oil filters? plz reply

  • Refer to the service manual for the best recommendations. Me personally? I change the filters every other oil change.

  • just like my new ktm 525 xc atv

  • great video. Rocky Mountain is by far the best in the business!! I buy from you guys all the time.

  • KTM oil changes are easier than I thought. I think I can handle this.
