quite honestly I think TNA Impact is as good a show as Raw at this point. Thats not saying Impact is all that great but honestly WWE is at it lowest point since they were on the wrong end of the Monday Night Wars (1996-97) in my opinion.
Stupid fucking WCW! They fucked up their biggest match in history when the referee forgot to give a fast count? And at the same time wasted Bret's arrival by making him a special ref! They gave all of the heat from the screwjob to Vince and the WWF
yeah like when kurt left eddie died it really started to get shitty yeah from 99-06 it was one of the best shows but yeah after UPN went down it was bad
Hayes is such a massive crybaby..'waah wahh you tried to put us out of busness, waahh you took bret hart away from us.'
jesus man thats why its called wrestling BUSINESS, not 'how long we can keep Michael Hayes happy and in a job in WWE with all of his buddies there forever.'
i liked michael hayes there because he wasn't all political and democratic about it. he said what everyone had said over the years and he kept things in perspective. no one could weasel their way with anything and had to explain their answers. he was a bit too agressive, yes, but he wasn't going to let anyone slither their way out the way vince would have to save face.
to me, the bell ringing after a three count doesn't seem significant in determining a match is over as oppose to the actual three count. To signify the start of the match, the bell ringing at the beginning of the match seems more significant then at the conclusion.
The truth is that the Monday Night Wars became the greatest era in wrestling history. I'm glad the WWE came out on top, but it took the WCW to bring out the best in sports entertainment.
Hogan barely made contact with the guard rail and it looked like crap. Then Sting comes flying full force with the Stinger Splash to save the moment. It's why guys like Sting are still Champs today and Hogan is stuck doing crappy reality shows.
I agree, Hayes is annoying. I would prefer for him to not be on this episode. I'm not a Hayes hater, but in this show he's a bit of a pain in the ass.
Hayes was a total asshole throughout this whole panel. He shouldn't have been on it, but I gained alot more respect for Bischoff while watching this episode.
Micheal Hayes drunk behind is the reason why lashley is not in wwe. he made a racist remark about him being the black lesnar. M.Hayes needs to get off the air and stop writing
Hayes really takes away from the flow of this entire roundtable. I think we are much more interested in Bischoff's take on the Wars and he can barely finish a thought without being interupted by him.
Mean Gean would've been a good guy to have in Hayes spot. Another WCW guy would've been nice and at the very least he would've shut up when other people were talking.
Hayes asked a really good question here (why DIDN'T they capitalize on the Montreal heat) and then ruined it with his slurred babbling. Hell, even when Bret actually DID debut they could've emphasized it more than they did.
I didnt think Hayes was drunk. But however, I disagree with his statement about only Hogan having creative control over his character. Basically the inmates (NWO) ran the asylum, including a damn ref (Patrick). And those guarenteed contracts basically told the talent that they didnt have to show up but they wil still get paid regardless
Sting should have been WAY more dominate they made him look like a wuss and this is when it started going all down hill. Boy they really messed up the ending here.
I know I'm gonna get bashed for this, but I don't care. I was 17 when this happened, I'm speaking from my point of view. The WWF started getting mainstream and fan attention again....because of Mike Tyson. When Tyson first came on and you didn't really know if he was going to fight with Austin, THAT made you check out the WWF. Tyson had just come off that Holyfield "bite" fight, and was a HUGE star in the world of sports. The WWF were SO smart bringing him in, and Bischoff has acknowledged this.
I'll agree that it was really smart to bring in "Iron Mike," and I certainly won't bash you for that point of view, but I think there wasn't really a particular turning point but more like a gradual change in attitude that all revolved around Austin, and much of it for me had to do with Bret Hart's heel turn and Austin's feud with him. I was more confused than anything at the time when the screwjob happened, but the reason I watched was to see how Bret acted as a heel. I was a huge fan of his.
Thank you for your comment. It's so nice to debate with people who act like adults and not these little children who seem to have just started watching in the last five years. With Tyson, I personally started watching WWF again because of him. I've looked back on the Bret heel thing, as with Austin's rise and see there were great things going on. But for me, Tyson is what got my attention again. Thanks again for acting like an adult. It's a nice change!
You're welcome. I watched as a child from around 1989 and saw first-hand, like many, the evolution of wrestling throughout the 90s. For someone in my generation, the 80s and 90s were the "good ol' days" that I wish I could have back.
I can't disagree with that. WCW spent well over a year and half with the Sting-Hogan storyline and put so much energy and time into it that it became the ultimate climax of WCW VS NWO. No other storyline in WCW at the time had much build up. Maybe Giant VS Nash. MAYBE.
I really think you could track it all back, and no one would've known it at the time, but this might have the very beginning of the WCW downward spiral. Funny because WCW at this point, and for the next 6-7 months to follow, would reach it's apex and make a profit of around $60 million in 1998. But for anyone who was watching (and believe me I was), the writing was on the wall.
You know, the funniest thing about that Sting-Hogan match, to me, was they had an in-ring celebration after he pinned Hogan, and of all people, Dave Meltzer was in the ring celebrating with Sting.... way to go Dave!!!
Man, that Sting/Hogan match at Starrcade really was a let down. That ENTIRE pay-per-view was a huge letdown. You build up to that and then... nothing! Bret Hart's debut was a referee. I mean, come on!
Bret's debut as a Ref kind of reminds you of Kurt Angle's debut in TNA and being the referee for Sting and Jeff Jarrett's match and Bound For Glory 2006 huh?
WWF should have died when Bret Hart jumped ship with WCW, but it did not. As a matter of fact, it made the WWF better as it gives other wrestlers that are below the roster the chance to become stars in their own right.
WCW had many chances of death like Ric Flair left the company in 1991, those dumb mini movies in the early 1990s, and keeping Hulk Hogan as the good guy (let's face it people were sick of the goody good Hogan by 1995).
WCW was bascially dead by 1999 and was offical in 2001.
I could never understand why Hogan got the clean pinfall THEN Bret came out and screwed Hogan allowing Sting to win?It left people thinking what was the point?Very poorly laid out.
Starrcade 97 was great til the end, they blew it big time, if they wanted Nick to did a fast count, he should've actually done it faster than that and the story line would've made since for real.
No shit i remember watching it and knowing for the first time that the WCW PPV had utterly failed and the whole storyline was falling apart
Highlights include
Highlights
1] The Outsiders lose the Tag titles to the overly roid raging and boring Steiners when Larry Zybsco acts as a ref and uses a FAST COUNT on Xpac.WCW looks weak for accepting a fast count for a non-ref to beat a Nash-;ess Outsiders
2] Zybsco in the same PPV fights Bischoff in a boring match nobody cared about.Hall loads a metal piece in Bischoffs footpad which goes flying out when he throws a kick.Bret cant DQ him since it goes flying into the crowd but he sticks too the script and KOs him before declaring the 2000 year old fat guy the winner
3] Sting/Hogan looks insane because of this finish.WCW looks like they cant win without double standards like fast counts Bret looks like a schizo and DDP the only "clean" WCW winner
sting should've won cleanly. that's what the fans wanted to see. sting winning fair and square after one full year of feuding and after it have sting and bret feud for the wcw title vs wwf champion, sharpshooter vs scorpion deathlock. men that would've made wcw king of the hill
actually, the ref messed up the whole thing because what was supposed to happen was he was supposed to count it fast and THEN the rest of it would have fit. but that didnt happen. bret was just following the script and doing what he was supposed to do. but i do agree that they should have just left it alone and kept hogan as the winner. it would've made for an even better story line.
The only thing that made WWF better that WCW,is Vince McMahon!!PERIOD!With the rouster that WCW had and with Vince on chargeman they would have been untouchble!Vince made a huge mistaike when he did'int keep WCW as a seperate brand!HUGE MISTAIKE!
