I would love for somebody to translate this lovely song "Now we are free" makes me cry everytime I watch Gladiator and I've seen it over and over and over again!! The only other choice I would have made for Maximus would have been Charleton Heston if her were of age but Russell Crowe is wonderful in this picture. The chemistry between him and Joaquin Phoenix is out of this world!! Joaquin should have one best supporting actor oscar for that movie!!

I can of course appreciate that the soundtrack is excellent in its own right.

For the majority of us without such an in-depth knowledge of ancient Rome, the storyline is still enjoyable i think.

Also the historical theme is not the only one in the film, other themes such as love, loyalty, betrayal, bravery etc, are all executed well.

If the film had benn more historically accurate, thus eliminating parts, the other themes would have been detracted from.

Out of interest, is it based on truth?

Of course there were gladitorial battles in ancient rome that were fierce and bloody, the subsequent rise of Christianity and the eventual conversion of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great (280-337) to Christianity (catholicism, the universal church) put an end to the spectacles.

But it could not, would not ever have been possible for a slave to fight an emperor,

emperors were held, at that time, to have been descended from the Gods.

I can only imagine how many thumbs down my comment will elicit, but to appreciate a movie I believe one has to look beyond the mesmerizing soundtrack and not let themselves be swayed by backround themes.

"Gladiator" was an OK movie, NOT GREAT. It is

grossly erroneous historically. Roman Generals were never demoted- ROMES greatness was predicated on an unusual brand of Honor that no longer exists among men.

Furthermore, never would an emperor, held in Godlike status, enter a fighting arena.

Fantastic film. Though i think from a film perspective the tragic ending makes it much more moving and memorable, since so many films have happy endings. Plus it gives rise to the line "he was a soldier of Rome; honour him" which always sends shivers down my back!

its funny how good gladiator was as a film, but at the same time it was considerable cheap to produce. In perspektive of other movies. But its not always the money that creates the best movie, its the intellegence of the script and camera angle, ideas, humor, love, human emotions generally. A good movie is one that most people want to relate to. And tell me. Who doesn't want to be a handsome, strong gladiator with a beautiful wife? :-)
