I have this noise in my engine. I have 180,000 miles on my car. It has good pickup and still gets good gas mileage.
Note 1: A ticking type noise may be noted when starting the engine cold. This is commonly caused by bleed down of the hydraulic valve lifters. Make sure the engine oil is clean and at the correct level, then run the engine for 20 minutes at 2,000 rpm. If this does not correct the fault the valve lifters should be replaced.
What kind of cost are we talking to have the chains and tensioners replaced at a shop? I have a 2001 2.5L tracker with 110K and it rattles a little on startup for about 3 minutes at idle during winter. Its cold here (10 degrees) so I think that may be acceptable but I am just forward thinking in case it gets worse.
@spyder000069 My 2001 2.5L Chevrolet Tracker have to. I change chains and tensioners, but in start (0.5-1 minute) engine have noise. I am sure it is chains and tensioners again.
Yeah, we changed all the chains, tensioners, and gears....Drove it fine for another week...and the engine went. Found a hole in one of the pistons. Sweet huh...fmL

Are you sure it's the chain?

The guys at the shop mentioned my GV 2000 also needs a timing chain change...
Just the chain goes for $1200 + labor.
It doesn't sound as bad as this tho, and mostly only sounds a bit when I turn on the car and let it idle while it warms up.
Or if I've hit the gas hard for a bit and then stop, the engine might even get some vibration on it.
I'm thinking that it's best if I just get rid of the car quickly...
