NOBODY LISTEN TO THIS GUY!!! he has like 50 of these videos on here with the worst advice i have ever heard. Just start out with open mic and make some friends. Alot of experienced comics go to open mic to test jokes. You will make alot of friends this way, stand up comedy is something you need to teach yourself. Stop wasting time watching these videos and practice for fuck sake.
To be funny...true.. but the only way to be funny is to ...get stage time (catch22).. I say .Write Write Write...go to any venue that will put you on stage..If you're in NYC hang around clubs constantly..make friends. shmooze, take spots offered and do your best regardless how many people are in the audience. Paul Mooney would come in a club after everyone finished and work two audience members for 45 minutes....If your out of town create your own shows go to bars, restaurants and perform it.
im just doing stand-up i have only done 2 gigs now and i recorded both so i know what the audience attracts to and how they can associate with the joke i also have found it is easy to know everyone in the place your doing stand-up if it is a small place i suggest you do the same you know get to the people and it will take TONS of pressure off.
That's some of the worst advice I've heard for getting stage-time. Any GOOD establishment that runs open mic nights will have a waiting list and you'll be on it. Late at first, when everyone has left or is drunk and only the few regular locals remain, but that will change if you ask about more performances. Having to barter for your stage time? You should NEVER have to pay for stage time in any way. Be patient, pushing in will piss off other comics that have already been told when they'll be on.
