Anyone wishing to see a "follow on" performance from the 2010 Tattoo in Sydney, Australia can find it on MCV's web site (just google it). Some of the same stuff but some new selections as well.
mwp62 welcome home. scots, and especially glaswegians did a lot to make america what it is today. pipe bands in the colonial army? that is something that i will research. i dont doubt that there were pipe bands in the colonial army as well as countless scots/american soldiers ( not a lot of time for the english, us scots) and also the jacobite rebellion of 1745 led by prince charles edward stuart, had just taken place. the u.s. was full of scots, immigrants and deportees. SLANTJE! (GOOD LUCK)
mwp62. your more scots than i am. my surname is alexander and that came from hungary to scotland via the vikings. my tartan is mcalistair (son of alexander). SLANTJE!
Here we have it! I've found that the Continental Army's General Lachlan MacKintosh's Georgia Brigade of the Line was largely kilted, particularly the 2nd Georgia, and marched to pipes. Most of the N. Carolina troops at Cowpens and King Mountain were Scots, and their pipers acccompanied them. The blue Kilmarnock bonnet was as popular among American troops as the three-cornered hat at the Battle of Saratoga, almost the entire Northern Army wore it and the pipes were there as well.
mpw62. told you so! were everywhere. the skirl o' the pipes and a wee kilmarnock bunnet. in an army thats all you need to get you going. now! there is a song called "wi my wee kilmarnock bunnet" and harry lauder sung it. if you are ever in scotland at hogmannay this will be sung sporadically during the festivities. (they go on for quite a while, HIC!)
i'm english and you're a right waffling cock. wat a load of bullshit. were you ever in the army? i doubt very much. well i was and lots of my mates were jocks, welsh and irish and didnt spout the shite you come out. cut the shite out trying to impress foreigners fuckin bellend
10trains. for an englishman i see that you have a great command of the language. oh! and dont get so upset, the comments that i made were meant for thinking people that are up for a laugh, not people like you. as a matter of fact i was in the army, 9 yrs regular and 6yrs reserve, and i met a lot of great people during that time. my son in law is english and you couldnt meet a nicer guy. but, the rubbish that you are spewing is just what we scots expect from an ignorant (not all are) englishman.
up for a laugh, oh of course. sorry am just a thick iliterate northerner from england. nevermind. mind i dont spew rubbish and i have alot of mates from the 4 corners of the uk. i notice how it was 'ignorant englishman' and not just 'ignorant'. i am extremely proud to be english and believe and know we stand for the greater good. not like the image every other cunt in the world including some scottish want to make us out to be.
you probably have scots blood coursing through your veins (we were very busy in the colonies) america! scotland, england, ireland, and wales and lots more countries lumped together. but the music we are talking about here is mainly western european. most of the british foot guard bands have a fife corps. that is except the scots guards, we went for the pipes. one description of playing the bagpipes is, " its like wrestling an octopus on dry land"
Your right on all counts, from your perspective we do have quite a legacy of bag pipes in the U.S. and my last name is Patterson (great great Grandpa's from Glasgow) - my Stepfather (mom remarried after dad passed away) whose last name is ironically Pattison is a bagpiper from Canada. Anyway I guess what I was wondering is why our traditional Colonial bands do not seem to feature pipes but only fife and drum. Were there pipe "foot guard" bands in the American Revolutionary Army?
Yep, we are based in Bedford Mass, just North of Boston. We do most of our gigs in eastern Mass ( Boston and surounding area) and travel internationally about once every two years. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo was Great to do!
Great stuff oboebill. You have a terrific team there. Typical Americans..loads of skill effort and style...as the old drill sergeant would say "give it some swank!"
How incredible!!!! AWESOME! I just love this. Is it hard to attend these performances put on each year? Does anyone know? I want to take my mom to one before she passes on. Thanks!!!
AS a proud Brit, I have to say the MCV are magnificent...wonderful precision... and the pride, nay sheer hauteur of that drum major really IS something to write home about...

The odd thing is that the band is a civilian volunteer band, not an official Army or Marine band. Not bad for civilians, eh?

I from the U.S., and I agree, but I do wish we had more of a legacy of bag pipes to go along with our tradition.
