I actually hacked into the system and started playing as Papal States. Lol in less then thirty turns, Milan, Venice, and Sicily got excommunicated for attacking me.
What is fun is that any faction that pissed you off quickly becomes excommunicated. You can then send Crusade nukes on them.
Everytime I attack the Pope, he acts like a coward hiding in Rome.... I managed to destroy nearly his ENTIRE army XD It was hilarious.
I stationed a massive army of cavalry right outside the gate (In battle-mode) circling it... The only unit left was his General Bodyguard AKA the Pope. Everytime he went through the gate, he lost one man then fled until he had ONE unit left and just stood there at the city-centre.
The Hardest campaign and i use hardest very lightly in my opinion is the Byzantines with the Turks and Egypt constantly harrassing you with Jihads on Constantinople and Venice and Hungary to the North its quite intresting plus allies are far and few still it is a joke that you should be able to win when you have a Jihad and Crusade on your capital at the same time... <3 Napoleon Total War were you can declare war on every faction on the first turn wish they used the same system for Medieval.
I sit around in Rome with a squad of gunners and a heavy horse unit and every time a new Pope is elected, I kill him the very next turn. It DOES get me a lot of favor points since I keep voting for the right one. Then finally I just ask to be reconiled once I have max favor and the Pope loves me!!!! Repeat every time he excommunitates you.

The Papal States can ONLY be destroyed when all Loyal (not excomunicated) Catholic nations are destroyed first. Everytime they lose their last territory, they force a Catholic nation to give them a new territory. So if you want to destroy the Papal States, then you need to destroy the ENTIRE catholic world first.

The pope does make a good ally im playing as Sicily and i continue they are a powerful shield against the English empire in the north, while i slowly invade Iberia their territories in Iberia. I also called a crusade on Spain which was their ally they fell for the bait and attacked Spain i used this opportunity and now Spain is my Vassal.
I charged the popes army with Venice epic thing was that they got reinforcements 4 freaking general units :))).Lucky the battle was on a bridge and i had loads of spearmen(italian spear militia with attack and 2 defense) and venetian archers+pavise crosbowen.Theyre cavalary and infantry just charged my spearmen like mads.Generals were dying one by one but the units still fighted.Was a massacre in which i remained only with crosbowen and venetian archers they did the most kills

I'm not sure but in the original Medieval Total War you could never really defeat the Papacy. They just spring up somewhere else on the map. I think its the same in Medieval 2 as well.

Dude i know the feeling , in Teutonic Campaign i eliminated the Lithuanians and then the Holy Roman Empire cam into the fray and asked me for an alliance and to help them invade poland , i helped them do that then they attacked me but i had like 7 huge armys so i pwned em xD
the french betray me in a stupid way, ok first i give them like 50k florins (I SOMETIMES cheat) and then I have like 6 huge armies in the border with forts and fully upgraded soldiers wityh max xp, and then they sned tehyre princess saying "Give us these 2 regions and some florins or we will attack " and I laugh and decline and then they send a small army that relies on reinforcements and i defeat them, they ask for peace but i declien and take over many of theyre regions until the pope gets mad

Yea I got it like 4 days ago. It is like 50 times better than Rome Total War. When your army gets attacked they react. Unlike Rome where they just sway thier swords around. Plus better graphics.
matter of opinion. I like medieval better but rome has much more charm, medievals is dull and slightly comlicated where as rome is wondefully colourful and and having legions is also good
I attempted to kill the pope once. He left out of the city in one of the rare times that he did and I sent my finest general who was lucky enough to be in the Italian Peninsula at the time. The Pope's Bodyguard unit outnumbered my general's bodyguard unit by about ten men and they were the only units on the feild. Needless to say the pope was a badass fighter and I was watching him duel it out with my soldiers. I won the battle but it was a pyhirric victory. I captured the pope and ransomed him.
A victory won at a great cost to the winning army. For example the victor could emerge from a battle with an 1/8 of his original force, essentially this victory has crippled his army so badly it would force the commander to return home.
Apparently the only way you can properly get rid of The Papacy (without cheating) is if there are no Cardinals anywhere in Europe and you have conquered all their lands
you just need to kill them all in the same turn, or destroy all christian factions - then you can focus on the cardinals in the papal states - to bring them down at the same time.
So? I did it with Venice lol, Every nation except Russia and the Turks attacked me, it was so lame and fun, I kicked them all without using cheats, but then I gave up as I wanted to conquer the world, so I took Sicily :)

I played as Sicily and sacked Rome within first 10 turns killing two popes in the process (1 from a battle outside of Rome and another from killing heir in Rome), was kinda sad when it didn't tell me that the faction was destroyed.
actually, it can, but only if every priest and cardinal is dead. unfortunately, the only way to do that is to either be an islamic faction, destory every catholic army, then Rome, or be a catholic faction, not recruit any priests and wipe out the rest like that. It can be done, it jjust takes a lot of time, effort, luck and gold to pay for the numbers of troops your gonna need :(

yes u can unlock some factions, altough i am not sure which ones. but u should be able to play papal states etc with a cheat u can find on google

the pope is a jack ass in this game when ever i invade the scottish the pope will always tell me to cease hostillties and gives the scotts to regroup and i have to fight a whole new army

Yea I got it like 4 days ago. It is like 50 times better than Rome Total War. When your army gets attacked they react. Unlike Rome where they just sway thier swords around. Plus better graphics.

matter of opinion. I like medieval better but rome has much more charm, medievals is dull and slightly comlicated where as rome is wondefully colourful and and having legions is also good

I attempted to kill the pope once. He left out of the city in one of the rare times that he did and I sent my finest general who was lucky enough to be in the Italian Peninsula at the time. The Pope's Bodyguard unit outnumbered my general's bodyguard unit by about ten men and they were the only units on the feild. Needless to say the pope was a badass fighter and I was watching him duel it out with my soldiers. I won the battle but it was a pyhirric victory. I captured the pope and ransomed him.

A victory won at a great cost to the winning army. For example the victor could emerge from a battle with an 1/8 of his original force, essentially this victory has crippled his army so badly it would force the commander to return home.

nice try to get rome, but in this game the papal states never can lose. each time u get all the settlements, theyll find somehow a new one.

Apparently the only way you can properly get rid of The Papacy (without cheating) is if there are no Cardinals anywhere in Europe and you have conquered all their lands

you just need to kill them all in the same turn, or destroy all christian factions - then you can focus on the cardinals in the papal states - to bring them down at the same time.

So? I did it with Venice lol, Every nation except Russia and the Turks attacked me, it was so lame and fun, I kicked them all without using cheats, but then I gave up as I wanted to conquer the world, so I took Sicily :)

I played as Sicily and sacked Rome within first 10 turns killing two popes in the process (1 from a battle outside of Rome and another from killing heir in Rome), was kinda sad when it didn't tell me that the faction was destroyed.

actually, it can, but only if every priest and cardinal is dead. unfortunately, the only way to do that is to either be an islamic faction, destory every catholic army, then Rome, or be a catholic faction, not recruit any priests and wipe out the rest like that. It can be done, it jjust takes a lot of time, effort, luck and gold to pay for the numbers of troops your gonna need :(

when u start u should send diplomat to papal states and offer trade rights to them if they accept come back after 2 turns or so and make an alliance. then u wait someone to attack and when enemy attacks u the pope won't care so much if u attack the enemy
