@DavidWicked i know, thats a weird question to ask. the homeless in japan i heard gether together at some park and they all pitch in and help each other. they build houses, cook foods for everyone, clean clothes, etc. in america, the homeless dont give a shit for each other, in japan they have dignity
@itmonalisa Hmmmm, I can read enough Japanese to recognize that this is (yet another) message about the soy sauce. Thank you for the comment, and all. Know that I did really enjoy this dish, and that I generally love Japanese food. にほんしょく おいしい です! :`)
@weinmanjoe Ah, so I've been told. This video was from over two years ago. Think there's any chance everyone would relax about my eating habits if I posted a new video dipping just the fish in the soy sauce? I love sushi and would totally be willing to do that. Hmmmm, I think I will do that. It'll be good to briefly address the commentors here in a video response, as the text comments don't seem to be helping.
It's disrespectful to commemorate enjoying a tasty meal? Good luck rationalizing that one.
Also, you might want to do more research before pretending to be Japanese. I lived in Japan for a year and know the Japanese people to be FAR too tactful to gratuitously insult a total stranger.
Yes, yes, I'm aware that everyone thinks I put on too much soy sauce. Thanks for the comment, but you all do realize this is a meal I ate several years ago, right?
If I remember the conversion correctly, it was the equivalent of $35 or so. Expensive, yes, but cultural enrichment is worth the occasional splurge. It was *fantastic* sushi. :`)
Thankya. I shall keep this in mind. Most Japanese said the same, but oddly enough, the owner of the English school that I worked for always ate his with chop sticks (o-hashi). Go figure!
It's o.k. to eat sushi with chopsticks, but what really made me cringe (no offense OP) was the drowning in soy sauce. Over here it doesn't matter much, but I've heard that some sushi chefs get very irate when foreigners do this. It's the equivalent of a gourmet chef preparing a special meal and then having someone squirt ketchup all over it before eating. You're supposed to just lightly dip the fish side into the soy otherwise all you taste is soy and what's the point in that?
Thanks for the advice and all. It amazes me that I'm still getting the "you add too much soy sauce" comments after two years of this being up. Most videos die down long, long before that. I would point out that the soy sauce is only on the bottom of the rice. I very much got the full flavor of the fish. Regardless, thank you for the feedback. It makes sense.
LOL. Try not to take it personally. People just take their food seriously...especially well-known dishes. You should see my father staunchy defend his ideas on how a burger should be cooked. Scary. :)
You put too much soy sauce, fresh fish taste is ruined. BTW, you should dip soy sauce on the TOP of the fish, not on the rice. This is a sophisticated Japanese custom.
*sigh* Yep, everybody keeps telling me this. Honestly, I dipped it in the soy sauce to save time because my friend was having a hard time holding up the camera in the small space where we were sitting. Normally, I pour it on top of the fish and don't use so much. That being said, believe me, I tasted the full flavor of the food. I really like sushi, and this was probably the best I've ever tasted.
I'm sorry if my comment sounds mean. You really respect Japanese culture.
You should make an orientation video for all the foreigners who wanna visit Japan, you can teach them Kobe beef is pronounced as "ko-bay" not "kob" beef!
Hmmmm, I do miss Japan, and an orientation video would be a good way to keep talking with people about its culture. What else would you like foreigners to know besides the correct pronunciation of Kobe? :-D
Yeah, I guess so. I had a midwife tell me that most sushi is ok but my friend who's also a midwife says that the knifes they use in the restaraunt hold bacteria or whatever that isn't good for the baby so it's best to just to stay away from it. Oh well, I only have another 5 months to go- lol.
well its kinda true that its not good but it doesnt do anything just your baby is gonna be addicted to sushi like i am :D and ya they clean their knives alottttt lol
Hahaha, well thanks. I actually hold them totally wrong, but I figure as long as the food makes it to my mouth I'm managing alright. Holding the chop sticks correctly actually hurts my hands.
next time try to dip the shoyu on the fish side only ( not too much tho ) ... cos they will prevent the rice from falling apart when dipping into the shoyu
my cousin is a teacher in japan and says that in some sushi places, they charge you not by what you order but much more rather how you eat it.if thats true thats pretty dope
Hahah, well he/she must be going to different sushi places than I did, because I never saw that. The sushi restaurants I went to charged according to the meal you ordered or, if it was a conveyor belt place, by how many plates you ate. Both kinds are awesome, but ordering is generally more expensive.
Bet that was pretty expensive as well. I've eaten at an average Tsukiji shack before, and my whole lunch course (which didn't fill me up) was over 5000 yen! (40-45 bucks)
We walked around to find the most affordable place around, which was still rather expensive since this was Tsukiji. I believe this was in the range of 36 American dollars.
i'm 11 years old and i have made sushi since i was 9 ur luck u get to go to japan for authentic real homelandland pasttime of sushi. the comment below is right
You dip the fish in shoyu, not the rice. And you don't hold the shoyu in your hand. But you ate it in a single bite, which is the right way to eat sushi...
