Genius... one is a blues-rocker star, the ohter is a jazz man, maybe this will be the reason, for the two different styles, and the other man in the scene is one of the fathers of the electric guitar sound, I think is great heard 3 legends playin together.
Why do people try to compare music legends on who's better? All 3 of these men are musical geniuses with obviously a ton of respect for each other. To many variables & personal preferences to determine who's the best. Why not just watch & enjoy a great moment in history?
Stupid trying to compare these together, B B king by far the best blues man - singer and guitar combined, clapton great blues and rock player appeals to a wider audience, Benson jazz guitar and on another planet were music theory is concerned.
Good LORD all you fools trying to find a 'winner' in this video are being laughed at not only by those of us that really get it but also by these three great musicians if they wanted to waste their time on you......DAMN go watch an NBA game to find your 'winner' and leave the important shit to the pros......
Where do people get this idea of competition in music? Well i guess the bluesmen started that when they used to cut heads on the Mississippi Delta, however, I think it better to appreciate the individual expression of each individual! I get goosebumps from one note on Lucille the same as I do a slick jazzy riff from Benson and in reality none are better than the other! Human nature to box and categorize I suppose!
Im not usually impressed with Clapton, and this is the best Ive ever heard him play. But Benson won this round. He just burned up the room with his playing here.
@zambonitron Listen to or watch the video of " Old Love " from 24 Nights, I've been to quite a few of Clapton's concerts and in my opinion, he's at his best here. As to who won what, these guys were there for BB and all that matters is the music. "This Masqurade" written by Leon Russell, performed by Geroge Benson on his " Breezin " LP just blew me away, without a doubt the best cover of that song I've ever heard, and for as good as Clapton is , I don't think he could touch it.
I'm not keen on these black-tie, mutual-backslapping blues concerts. Give me a groovin' little blues band in a club any time. And don't invite George Benson. He's a great jazz guitarist but he ain't down 'n' dirty enough to play & sing some soulful blues.
Still, if events like this make people more aware of the best music, all well and good.
It's so childish comparing a blues/rock guitarist to a jazz guitarist. They've all created great tunes, that's what matters. They all have their own style, that's what matters.
I agree clapton is so bored nowadays always playing the same fucking scale clapton let me tell you something jutst get the hell out the stages your death u never been such a great musician as people said learn from the master George Benson and u will be bether when u go to heaven Benson u got ur place on heaven Goog knows it
@whitedammit -Hey whitedammit, maybe if you laid off the white lightning you could actually see and hear the uncompromised greatness of a true guitar god--- Eric Clapton!!!
Benson killed it on that guitar. BB King has even acknowledged Benson's magnificent guitar chops on BB's album titled "King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents B. B. King Live!"
ya dije y lo digo otra ves póngale una guitarra a B.B KING y hace magia a pesar de su edad eres grande gracias por tanto talento dios te bendiga siempre.
I really like Eric Clapton but I think George Benson is better, he plays more melodical. Clapton can play in only two major pentatonic positions so his liks aren't very different and after 30 years I think it becomes quite boring to play always the same.
@JazzyZenBrotha There's also a "Guitar" UK magazine from 1974 which has one of the best ,early ,interviews with GB in it. Great photo of Benson on the cover (dark blue)
@JazzyZenBrotha There's a book called "Secrets From The Masters"(page 43)
Eric Clapton is asked by Dan Forte "Have you ever got into jazz?"
" All that double picking..i've never been able to do that fast thing. If you watch Benson or someone..the amount of fret positions they can get out of 3 or 4 chords..you know, i just don't know about all that stuff (laughs)"
@taildragger53 - Ha ha. Good to know. I'd love to read that article too. It would be some nice evidence to show my arrogant friends who don't even have knowledge on the guitar. I'm glad the proof is out there.
@JazzyZenBrotha I suppose it's a case of "each to his own' and some will always love the repetitive 3 chord /blues licks. I do too but when it comes to real structural knowledge of harmony and imagination etc the freedom of expression lies with a jazz musician.
Wes Montgomery is my personal favourite, even above Benson.
@TheBlues088 cada uno con su opinion, pero es como decir, Led zeppelin es mejor que Pink Floyd o que los Rolling Stones o los beatles. son todos grandes, cada uno escribio su historia y su estilo.
@Bigbluesboy I don't belive you really know what are you talking about. I love Eric Clapton, his style, bending technique so I really know and understand what he plays but kill me if he knows all the tones on the fretboard. I'm trying to say that he only knows some pentatonic patterns. Everybody know roots, scale patterns... not very hard. If you want to go from major pentatonic to minor pentatonic just move your pattern for minor third down (three frets on the guitar).
@TheBlues088 Well that is it on a theorical aspect. But if you try to play like Clapton does, you'll see it's way more complicated that that! That being said, of course Benson is WAY more versatile and probably a better guitar play, even though I prefer Eric Clapton.
@TheBlues088 i think clapton plays passionately but he doesn't convey the level of his playing in his actions watch them without the sound and see what you feel
@TheBlues088 Of course Benson is technically better, he's primarily a jazz guitarist. Jazz is where musicians go when they've already mastered everything else. It's not important who's "better", the blues are about soul and emotion, and they've all got it. Technically, BB King can barely play, he doesn't even know any chords (this is a fact), but his feeling is what makes it what it is.
If Benson and Clapton (otherwise known as "god") went head to head in a cutting contest Clapton would end up being shown the door. He would have to be carried out because Benson would mop up the floor with him. Benson is the superior guitarist by far.
You just witnessed three legends. Each has a different style that has influenced generations of musicians. I you can't play better ( and you can't) don't criticize.
I teach at the World's Most Famous Music School, in Boston, in the Guitar Department, and as your tuition pays my salary, making you my customer, please let me respectfully provide to you part of the service, the evaluative part, for which you're paying (a lot): You are woefully uninformed about this idiom, and you need to study more.

@TheBeatlesCom BB actually knows a fair amount of theory....Allan Holdsworth does not alternate pick much in the traditional sense nor did he learn theory in a traditional manner. Does that make you and your classmates better than Holdsworth?
@pledgerfretwell What are you talkking about holdsworth was a true beast and chord theory structure and melodic sense of diatonic scale designs, why infact we studyed abit of his theory sense, BB has over used the minor pentatonic for many years to come.
