I like your beard ;) Anyhow, I like that you call that gardening is like meditation. When I worked on a farm, my fellow farmer told me always to meditate when working, and it was very enjoyable ;)
To stop carrot fly you need to raise the bed higher. To at least 60 cm because them little fuckers cant fly higher than that. I got my carrot bed in a raised bed 4 foot off the floor with a copper strip around the bottom and nothing gets in there.
If ya plant Onion & Carrot together then they work2 keep Onion fly and Carrot fly away because they don't like the smell of the other. If ya plant them in rows that is. If ya like more carrots then onions; ya could plant two rows of carrots with a row of onions in between & even plant one onion for every 6 carrots (three on each side that is)..(hope that made sense)
Also, tomato clippings make a great "bug away" spray if u mash them up in H2O. All but tomato worm of course.
i have tried to grow carrots and potatos before but i never know when to harvest and it always ends up i leave them too long and the same with winter cloe pairs, even though i can see the pairs i always end up leaving them too long! it's rather discouraging
This was a very pleasent video. Your well spoken, easy on the eyes, and obviously know what you're talking about in the garden. Thanks for posting this video! Two questions one personal 1. Do you know Jesus? 2. What is the best fertilizer for carrots?
great vid was out in my garden just now and hope i've done this right and not messed my carrots up. growing in one pot and had to thin them out so transplanted some to another pot. hopefully see how things go for the rest of the summer and all goes well. once again thanks for the info.

Hi, you said you recommend planting carrots towards end of summer, just wondering what climate zone you are in aust, im up tin townsville so, dry tropics region, would i plant mine at the same time or maybe wait a little longer, any tips would be great, thanks!
@hablerz when you buy them cut the top off and plant that after it scabs...wait until it flowers then collect the seeds for drying then planting... hope this helps!
@hablerz oh hey thats really neat... i just checked out your garden... AWESOME!!!!
i just had my raised bed built... cant wait to plant carrots, peas and potato for my my fall crops... wish i had a camera to doc. it... this is my first attempt to serious gardening.... have you heard about compost tea?
@ALETHEIA8881 I havent got a garden atm just my window sill, i am studying it for when i do tho. Ive seen lots of vids re: compost tea , its dead easy to make. I think the best way to grow potatoes is in nylon bags , just top up the soil when the leaves appear, no digging and you maximise the crop yeild.
i was wanting to learn about the pesky carrot fly you were talking about. how do you keep those away? i've heard if you plant onion next to them it helps keep them at bay. is this true? or is there another thing to plant next to it? or is there another tip you can think of to prevent them? thanks so much!!!!!!! =)
Take pleasure in the fact your grown carrots didn't live in a plastic bag for a week, and didn't take any large amount of petrol (exception going to picking up seeds, seeds getting to shop etc..) too.
FYI: According to The Vegetable Gardeners BIBLE pg5 regarding the carrot root system. "The truth is that they can extend 1 1/2 feet horizontally and as much as 3 feet deep." This information was given to emphasize the importance of deep tilling in garden beds, and also allowing good horizontal root growth for all veggies. PS: nice vid.

Hey matee great video. I'v had some weird looking carrots due to shitty rocky soil, but because I planted soooo many (I harvested 3 X 9 litre buckets full) I got enough that were easy to peel etc. I'v had two carrots wind around each other like twine! It was bizarre!
If you need help, just send me a message, I have been gardening for over ten years with multiple plant families in a 1,280 sq. ft. garden. I started when I was young and would love to help you.
It is possible that they rotted if the temperature dropped to low, they can survive a light frost, but anything more than that and they rot. What I think is more likely is that you either got old seeds that were no good, or the seeds were improperly stored, got moist, and couldn't germinate properly, thus destroying them. Typical seed packets are not very good at storing seeds. In stores they are often exposed to moisture in the air.
Very useful info! I just planted some carrots and radishes, tomato plants. The stuff is finally coming up! I put in tomato plants so I think they are too busy putting out roots in their big pots, one flower so far. It's been two weeks. I planted a strawberry plant also, in its own pot. Now I'm trying to find out if I planted everything correctly! As well as how to thin, prune, water, feed and when to harvest:)
The flies lay their eggs around the developing carrots, the larvae, once hatched, burrow into the root. As female carrot flies are very low flying, the best method of prevention is to erect a barrier around the crop at least 60cm high. Alternatively horticultural fleece may be used as a floating mulch to cover the crop.
Heres a tip re carrot fly. Plant the carrots 23 inches above the ground level and the fly cant get them. I was amazed to find out that they are very low flying . Use a tub and raise it. You can pack them into it.
'budding' first time gardener here. Would love to try some carrots. This is my first time seeing your vid...very informative and enjoyable..kudos to you and much thanks from Tampa, Florida, US
We've just started growing organic vegetables on a larger scale than we usually do, and we put carrots next to cabbages...bad idea! The cabbages completely swamped the carrots except for a few and now the carrots are just long, thin, and leggy plants with no carrot on the bottom. I just now put some more seeds in well away from anything so we'll see how it goes!
the first feeder leaves will be longer and smooth then the erratic shaped ones will follow, if in doubt dont pull them out and let them grow a bit more for easier i.d!
I'm growing carrots for the FIRST time and things are JUST starting to come up but because it's my first time, I can't tell what would be the carrots and what may be little weeds.
Can anyone describe what carrots look like when they first emerge so that I know what to pull up and what to leave?
If you sowed them in rows you will see the perfect row of seedlings comming up, the have two little green shoots, like someone giving you the two fingers!
Thank you for sharing your garden. Wow...why didn't I think of starting carrots en mass and transplanting them instead of wasting so many by thinning. I will be using this method this year in my garden in in Kentucky. Keep the vids comming.
