LIIEEE!!!! you dont need any professional or superior education to posses any type of aviation license!!! u can still be in highschool and you can have a private pilot license, so yeah! airline pilot is all beacuase of her not cus of her GED
@simfgta you are right... but no airline will hire you unless you poses a college degree.... that is where the GED helped go to college and get the degree which finally lead her to the Airline Career....
@phantom0482 not really, i know tons of pilots that never went to college and are captains in airlines... now if you wish to apply just out of flight school with the minimum requirements well yes they want to see a higher education degree
so what learjetjock is saying is that over time airlines will be shouting out for pilots? does this mean competitiveness will fall? i really hope so! my one dream is to be an airline pilot! flying is in my blood, but the furthest ive got so far is a c152 :D ill spare the life story :)
GED, BS, BA, ya gotta have a degree to fly commercially with a major airline. Idiots you say? What do you know. A monkey can fly an approach on a clear day. How about a 100 foot overcast with 1 quarter mile visibility, a hydraulic system failing and a 20 knot crosswind. Skeptics shut up. When the chips are down your safety depends on the pilot whose professionalism will keep your ass safe.
I do not know where you obtained your information from but at the major I am with I know many pilots who do not have a degree. A degree makes you competitive. PIC time and a clean green card are what earn the job.
Obtaining my information: Well, start with a bachelor's degree in 1971, then 7 years as a Navy pilot and 30 years with American airlines - retiring as a 777 captain. There were a *few* non-degreed pilots when I was hired in 1978, but few -if any- now because they are not competitive in a job interview. PIC time is a given... without that, you don't get the interview.
I agree it is not competative generally speaking but no one is following the path to flying anymore really when you talk to people in school. The reason is there is no payoff anymore. Let's face it. Right now to get into a major for most is a distant dream. Everyone hired recently at Regionals is going to be there a long time and no one wants to give up seinority. So, by the time the genration beginning to retire now goes there will be a huge hole and noone is really going to be there to fill it
@rippin187 I beg to differ. Right now there isnt. But in the future there will be because no one wants to piss their life away as an RJ pilot for 10 years than go tho the back of the bus at a major when they get there. If I had to do it all over today I'd rather be that air freshener in a urinal than an airline pilot starting out or even a five year F/O at a regional.
you idiots pay 100k for a job that pays 18k, then you go out fly like shit cause you suck at it. That is why the pay sucks....because YOU accept the job. Stop accepting the job and the pay will go up.
I agree 20 years of poverty wage (living below the poverty line) is a big waste of my life (God forbid I won't die in a crash in the 20 years). Pilots NEED more pay, at least 50-60k/yr with all the added benefits ( free accomodation at the airport, etc). Its a shame that this job is severely exploited and undermined by the regional airlines.
I wanted to be a pilot but when I see the garbage wage, I'd rather work in McDonalds doing far easier things!!
ARe you some kind of idiot? First off how the hell would you pay your education bills for all the training you had to do to become such a pilot, let alone all the other bills you have? What get a second job?
It is numb skulls like you that make it seem alright that somebody who has lives in their hands as well as the saftey of a very expensive machine, get paid squat.
There is nothing I'd like to tell you. I just want to know where in this country you can leave a decent life when not flying, when getting paid nothing for your work. You said you would happily fly for nothing. Well right now there are pilots getting paid 20k for flying regional, and they have not won the lottery. With your way of thinking only the very rich or lottery winners would be able to fly.
u just don't get it! I didn't mean it literally! U obviously have no imagination and even less sense of humor.
And btw I live in germany. Here u get paid by the government or state, whatever u want to call it, if u don't have a job.
So, being so realistic and without any imagination or sense of humor as u seem to be, one could actually declare the flying as volountary work and get financial help from the government/state...
Here in the states. If you don't make the money to pay the bills. Your screwed. Really screwed. Unless you qualify for welfare (have no job, no income, and kids) you are shit outta luck.
What you have is frankly wonderful to me.
And I am not kidding.
In that case you just gave, I wouldn't mind flying for little or nothing.
id have to say you are right....with the US national average of a professional pilot at 24,000 a year....it would certainly have to be only about flying and not the money. Even a 1st officer for Delta only makes about 45,000 a year.
i too enjoy flying and have NO intentions of making a career out of it. ....its about getting away and being concentrated on the matter at hand while being alone in a setting that is nothing short of amazing.

Sorry I have to reply to this, for some reason I don't see any other place I can post. Any who, home schooling is better for education imo. Now these days, schools just give out diplomas just to pass the students. I know ALOOT of kids that graduated, yet can't read or spell on a 5th grade level. Its sad, but true. It just shows you that just because you got your education a different way other than high school, doesn't mean you're slow.
