  • Family was the first gig I went to c. 1972 at Portsmouth Guildhall. The next one was Family again c.1973 at Portsmouth Mecca ballroom. Next was to see Roger fronting Streetwalkers c.1974. Seen him all over the place and most recently at the Jazz Cafe, Camden, London earlier this month. Nearly 40 years on from my first gig and he still puts on a fabulous show. Roll on the next gig in March 2012 in Leicester, England.

  • I saw them at one of the free concerts that they used to have in Hyde Park. It was summer 1968 and guess which band absolutely stole the show? I went to every Family gig I possibly could afterwards. Later configurations were great, of course, but I always thought that Jim King was brilliant. Impressing with cool musicianship only. Took a bit of doing when you were on the same stage with the amazing Roger Chapman.

  • @Cachibym I was there too and agree that Family blew everyone else away (Fleetwood Mac, Fairports, Ten Years After). They never quite reached the same heights when I saw them subsequently.

  • Has to indeed be among the earliest footage about for Family.Curently know about of course. This was sourced from French TV show "Pop Deux "( Pop 2 ).Broadcast in 1968 I believe here.Do not have specific broadcast details there sadly.Taken from thier first album "Music In A Dolls House" for which have an origional UK Reprise-mint copy for!A True Classic. Thanks for the great post!

  • Priceless!

  • Brilliant, not as good as the 'widescreen' album version though.

Saw them in '69,remember very well Chapman's 'hooligan' act with the mic stand.

  • Pulling another old rabbit out of the hat. Roger Chapman's band 'Family' were big in England late 60's- early 70's. They were truly innovative. Unfortunately, the video quality is pretty poor. The album was "The Doll's House"

  • Pulling another old rabbit out of the hat. Roger Chapman's 'Family' were big in England late 60's-early 70's. They were truly innovative. Unfortunately, the video quality is pretty poor. Roger also fronted the shortlived band 'Widowmaker'.

  • DOES CHAPPO LOOKS LIKE JOHNNY ROTTEN ??!!

  • Absolutely great, maybe one of the earliest films of the band? Thanks for sharing.

  • I actually sold my Fresh Cream album to a friend to by Dolls House when I was 14. He lived across the street so I could listen to both anyway ;)

  • Family were a favourite Uni band in London in my day 67-69 and also had working-class appeal.... prog rock working-class style? sounds strange but completely different to Cambridge type The Pink Floyd or Genesis -

  • I still have the 45 Me My Friend / Hey Mr Policeman..

  • Wow, an almost clean-cut looking Chapman...*truly* rare!!

  • I think that Family entertainment are the best. It has a intence energy. But both are fantastic. The childhood of heavy metal

  • Amazing to see this. Agree -- Family were truly brilliant and Music in a Doll's House was a masterpiece.

  • @howard010556

    Have to agree with that.

  • One of the best bands ever!

  • great to see this rare clip in france i presume, a wonderful song and a fantastic clip with Roger and no beard and some hair, great group who were never quite as big as they should have been, but maybe that is best and how it should be!

  • Its great that all this "rare" footage is starting to appear. Very nice...I agree with those who say "Music in a Doll's House" is a timeless masterpiece. Its an essential album to have if your interested in Prog

  • Yes Music In A Doll's House is a great album. I love all the tracks though one of my favourites is Mellowing Grey.

  • never thought Family got the recognition they deserved. does anyone know if Doll's House was released in mono? seem to be conflicting reports on that. not all that important anyway. thanks for posting this.

  • Yes .The copy I had and probably still have in the loft was mono.

A band that left its mark.Brilliant.

  • Great!!!

  • it sounds a lot better on the record

  • I've never imagined to watch this.. Thanks Chappomusic! you rule!

  • Glad to hear that the great Jim King is still alive, although I'm sorry to hear that he hasn't been very well.

This song is a work of genius from a great band at their very best. "Music in a Doll's House" is a timeless masterpiece, even if it is also very much of its time.

  • You are spot on. Family were the best group ever and Music in a Doll's House is their best album. It is a masterpiece.

  • Yeah, spot on with the masterpiece and as its 40 years old was a classic in stereo for the time as well. A Classic that never dates.

  • Such a long time. So good to see them and hear a classic.

  • T H A N K S F O R T H I S!!!

Used to see them a lot, back in the day.

    Excellent

  • Banjo based song may have been called Procession, but not 100% sure.

  • THANK YOU- how to say bigger than that?

  • Glastonbury 1971, Saturday night. Traffic and Family formed the best set of my life. Roger Chapman was exiting.

  • Brilliant

  • Anyone from uk may remember Family appearing on BBC's sound of the sixties with a cracking banjo based song , anyone no what its called please? been trying to track it down for ages.

  • It was called "Dim" and it was on the BBC sessions CD out a few years back. Nice track!

  • I loved Family....the first four albums are incredible.

  • genius. an amazing clip. it's great to hear them sounding so raw, and Chappo looks as demented as ever. pity the cameraman was more interested in moody close-ups than showing the whole band, but it does look good.

  • Tremendous performance - that takes me back a bit

  • mrvellous!!! i love fmily!!!!

  • why has history forgotten this fine band?

  • I put this out along with "dim", back in october under another name...it was banned!

  • would love to see/hear family doing "dim" again. Remember

seeing them doing tracks from the dolls house album years ago. Absolutely great! This is a real gem this. Whatever happened to Jim King?

  • Jim King became very ill, he resides in Cheshire and still plays harmonica.

  • Bedankt! Incredible clip. I have the audio portion of this on a bootleg. Nice to finally experience the visual document of this performance.

  • very good.. this must be the earliest footage of this fine band available...

  • Great to see and hear the first Family - Chappo nr one voice already
