  • Anyone catch the Gluck Iphegenie en Tauride by the MET a couple of weeks ago? Fantastic!

  • But the wind came up BEFORE the sacrifice. Perhaps there's no such thing as a god? Deer or Iphigenie, does it matter?

  • @rustydog1236 Welcome to the Greek Tragedy/Mythology...

  • I saw this movie when it was new at an art house in the U.S. I was only nine or 10 years old, but the film stayed with me all these years. I never thought I'd see it again!

  • I'm searching hard for this film and I didn't find it. Does anybody know a site from where to download? Please, I really have to see this movie !!

  • This film is wonderful.

Esta película es maravillosa.Realmente muy buena. Está muy bien realizada.

Iphigeneia is a pretty lovely girl . She will always

live in our memories. She did not die.

  • ..ifigeneia didnt got sucriefied,Godess Artemi took her and put a dear to her position and took her to Tavris land to be priest to her tample there, that a reason why the wind blows sooner

  • I think even in Euripides original play the deus ex machina ending is ironic (and Euripides is loaded with irony).

Clytemnestra (in the play) says, "Surely I must think that this is a false story which has been told to comfort me..." Euripides also leaves the myth ambiguous at the end.

A brilliant play, a brilliant film!

  • what a "pathos"! What a diference with Abraham's god (Isaac sacrifice). Hellade gods uses all their power to drive fate mankind as it's a mere puppet. Abraham's god just need confirmation mankind is his puppet.

  • as the sequal, clyemnestra gets her revenge and murders agamemnon! you go girl! he deserved it! thats the next part of the story

  • AND THE WINDS BLEW.........

  • Artemis will save her, I think. Orestes and Elektra will find her after Kleitemnestra dies..?

  • Muy bueno ! Gracias desde argentina ...

  • The wind change before the sacrifice is the director's artistic license. He shows the pointlessness of human sacrifice. Of course, this makes it all the more tragic. I'll bet Euripedes would have approved.

  • This is gorgeous.

This is one of my favourite videos on YouTube. So THANK you! :)

Euripides wrote this play some years after he wrote the Iphigenia in Tauris which is set afterwards (in dramatic time) in which she is reunited with her brother Orestes (the little boy you see here).

This movie does show it but at the end of the play Iphigenia is meant to be saved: the goddess Artimis replaces her with a deer. Like the deer killed at the start of this film! Go figure ;)

  • Which is the original myth? There are two myths: Iphigeneia in Avlis and Iphigeneia in Tavris. Both plays are Euripides'. In the first one, Iphigeneia is sacrificed (without for the sacrificed to be shown) and the second it shows that Artemis saved Iphigeneia and she was placed in the temple of Artemis in Tavris as a priestess. The above movie is the play of Iphigeneia in Avlis and all the words are directly from the original text

  • no my friend there are different plays at avlis is the sacrifices and then Artemis the god take her and puts an animal to her possition and take her to a barbarian country at Tavris and there mets her brother orestis and leave together

  • Θεέ μου τι μεγαλείο είναι αυτό? Ψέμματα να πω? 5/5

  • efgaristo ShakespeareAndMore!

euripides must be good, after 2400yrs we're watching it on Utube.

    :o]

  • Thanks a lot for this video. I saw the film many years ago and there isn´t porbably a movie about this topic better than this one.

  • Ifigeneia survive at the end!

Goddess Artemis put a deer on the alter and took Ifigeneia in the land of Tavrs. That is what Agamemnonas looking at. There Ifigeneia became a priestess. After of many years she meet again his little brother Orestis.

  • When agamamninas returns from troy Klitemistra kills him but this is an other story.

  • I really wish she would've yelled something..like "hey, the wind's blowing and I'm not dead yet!"

  • the wind before the sacrifice exist only in this movie not in the original myth
