Carl Sagan's early death aged just 62 was one of the greatest losses imaginable to the human race. Few men in history have ever said so clearly why we should put aside our petty. childish and self centered passions and work together, not like the Borg but as a free, united collective of individuals all pulling in the same direction. Politics, religion and ethnic division keep us in chains and anchored in all the follies of our primitive past.
@SardonicusRexx wait, didn't he use the phrase stardust, as per nova being needed to create what we have within our bodies to live?... starstuff? sounds even cheaper than dust, well maybe not, but stuff sounds too generic... i'll message u a link of our SOLAR WALK, carl would be proud, maybe we could have got him to do the ribbon cutting if he were around and still walking among us... we've had it since 2002... sure, its no sagan thing, but he'd like it for sure! and so should u!
Trivia: On the day this structure was unveiled there were 5 or so protestors, apparently opposed to "making the commons look like a cemetery". They wisely put down their signs when Ann Druyan got up to speak.
It certainly is. A tad small, but the surrounding region's natural beauty more than makes up for it. Did you get the "Wow" effect at the Sagan Planet Walk? That is, did the scale thing sink in? It took me 2 visits where i really thought about it, focused and looked things over before it really hit me.
OMG! Dude, you're wrong, but I can only imagine one thing as being a higher compliment! Thank you! Wow.
There are times when i do catch myself macking on his style and i feel a little guilty- as if subconsciously I know i lack his charisma and have to compensate by reaching for his reassuring rhythm.
Are you near Ithaca coinwasher? The sun is right on The Commons (in Ithaca), near the Bank of America. Pluto is at the Sciencenter. Jupiter is at the Dewitt "Mall" (you can get the $2 planet walk guide from stores there BTW)
R.I.P Carl, you are why im interested in astronomy

Lol your jellyfish is a magnet, and your 'constellation' is our Milky Way galaxy.
I find it odd that the symbols of the zodiac appear on a memorial to Carl Sagan, he hated the pseudo-science of astrology.

just wondering, what are all the symbols on the sun pedestal for? just symbols of things it's indirectly responsible for having created?

A lil bit jarring juxtaposition of cosmos and prosaic stuff like mailboxes and street curbs.
And that makes it a really excellent tour. :)
