This isn't sparring, this is jump up and down on a spot, flap your hands about tag each other with your foot. Semi contact point sparring has to be one of the worst inventions for the martial arts to date. It complete waters down what the martial arts are supposed to be about, effective combat. Take away the balls of sparring and this is what you are left with.

it is kung fu ; ) but its probably within United Kingdom and here there is no kung fu tournaments.. instead there are semi contact - continous tournaments and under those circumstances , we combine some kickboxing and tae kwon do techniques for the tournament purposes. : ) Obviously kung fu tournament would look completely different : )

Taekyuun may have had some influence but as far as I've been taught and told tae kwon do was derived from hwa rang do, which is why it even has a form named after the art "hwa rang". As I said before sanda is not a style of gung fu, wushu(gung fu) is mearly a system by which sanda is the application aspect. It is simply using what you have learned into hard sparring.

they werent doing the sport version they had the wrong kit on. you only wear mits and foot protection in ITF taekwondo. Its still a mute point though.if one is crap and the other is good it doesnt mean that one system is bad. I beaten loads of people from different martial arts backgrounds and been beaten by just as many. No one style is perfect because they all have flaws and any weakneess can be exploited. Try learning more than one martial art and you'll see what I mean.

that would because its obviously sport tae kwon do. the hopping is to be light on your feet, but honestly they are basically just hopping as you say. trying to joust with the closest foot, not exactly your ideal tae kwon do practicioner.

how did you manage to get on the topic of machida from this? Machida isn't neccecarily about precision or elusiveness, he just fights as he was taught, rather than being a typical brawler and just going for a haymaker, or a slug fest.

@SamuiHakai tkd was made less that 100 yrs ago, way after martial arts were needed to live and taught as a way of life, therefore it is badly broken and almost usless as a fighting style. the kung fu appears to be sanda, same thing i said about tkd applies to sanda

@MDNSBS Which is why the koreans used and use it in their military systems right? tae kwon do is derived from hwa rang do and its sister art tang soo do, calling either of which useless is simply ridiculous. Sanda is simply applications for chinese martial arts and nothing more.

@SamuiHakai yeah how often do modern wars get close enough to actually need hand to hand? what that never? oh yeah. and no the originally korean martial art was tekkyun a very effective style what goes back thousands of years but was nearly destroyed when the jappanese invaded, after the jappanese came what was left is tkd. and sanda is a bunch of crap and makes me sad to have to recognise it was kung fu, it is nothing even remotely similar to real kung fu

@MDNSBS wars? not often, regardless the military isn't about to teach its grunts a bunch of useless tripe. Taekyuun may have had some influence but as far as I've been taught and told tae kwon do was derived from hwa rang do, which is why it even has a form named after the art "hwa rang". As I said before sanda is not a style of gung fu, wushu(gung fu) is mearly a system by which sanda is the application aspect. It is simply using what you have learned into hard sparring.

@SamuiHakai im sorry mate but you have obviously never actually researched martial arts and only go by what youve been told. and yes the military does teach a bunch of usless garbage to make you feel more confident. my teacher was in the navy seals, he said many times if he didnt have any prior martial arts training he would of been killed if he did what they taught him.tkd might of started as hwa rang do but that means hwd would of been after the jappanese invaded and destroyed tekkyun.

Eh no...typically army grunt won't be a CQC expert, but he will get by with what they teach him against the typical opponent. Hwa rang do is old, but I won't bother to argue what TKD originated from because its meaningless.

@MDNSBS *facepalm*... how many times must I tell you that sanda is just application, it is not a style, what you call gung fu(kung fu) is just a term for a skillset, wushu is martial knowledge. Wushu encompasses everything there is to martial arts, by which it is practiced application wise through sanda. In other words, tang lang quan = wushu, shaolin quan = wushu, taiqi quan = wushu, fanzi quan = wushu, zui quan = wushu, baqua zhang = wushu, shuai jiao = wushu,etc...

Now I will impart you with 1 final statement "There is no such thing as a BS martial art, only BS practitioners". If you have time to bicker about a style being useless, you have time to train.
