Love the movie, but it had to be done.

I believe 1:26 was one of two significant segments cut from the movie. The other involved the Kilingons. Don't quote me on this, but I think they cut Spock's birth because of it possibly being different from what was portrayed in ST V. Plus, I think Spock was born prior to Kirk, and if you've seen the movie, what I'm saying should make some sense...

Probably though I don't think their births were too far apart. I'm reading the book now, which includes many of the deleated scenes, including Spock's birth. The distruction of the Kelven and Jim's birth picks up directly after so it may lead you to believe that if they didn't happen within days of each other, they happened the same day.
