This was the first match televised where perfect got his so called perfect record broke. of course Brutus was better, that's why he won. Bruti was the best bar none.
that flip neck breaker move by perfect was always one of my favorites. of course, not including the amazing selling he did for bum wrestlers like brutus beefcake.
Beefcake was one of the very best at that time. So was Perfect though. But other than Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior Beefcake was the next best at that moment in WWF history.
@howardtheman Ummm yeah. Because wrestling has predetermined outcomes therefore Perfect faked being knocked. Beefcake was chosen to go over and that was the finish they agreed upon.
one of Curt's best attributes was his willingness and ability to sell his opponent's moves. That's such an important heel quality... he often made the audience really feel like he was reeling in matches but he'd turn the tables and get victories. He almost always took the brunt of the moves early in matches from Blazer at WM5 to the Bret Hart matches... it's fun to look back in time at how his matches displayed the art of professional wrestling
Mr.Perfect! Was always underated (He was cleary one of the best in ring technicians of all time, I never understood y he never got a world title run)..Chris Jericho even said "Curt Hennig was the greatest wrestler never to become World Heavyweight Champion"..(Damn U McMahon!!!)
but HBK was a better athlete, Brutus got favors that he didn't deserve. I think because he used to be Hulk Hogan's man servant. Hogan must have spoke up for him. I personally, never saw the big deal in him..
Letting him go over clean against Curt Henning...c'mon, man.
mr.perfect was the 1 of the top 5 in ring performers 2 do it perfect had it all but the reason he was never pushed 2 b heavyweight champ was becuz he had a bad back i honestly think if his back wasnt bad he'd b a much better champ than hogan ric flair even the ultimate warrior he was funny he could wrestle his ass off n he was a show man with all that going 4 him he shouldve been champ but vince didnt take a risk instead he put bret hart in front of mr perfect it sux
i remember this my bro passed me down the video of this and other ones. Think i saw the best era's of wrestling for my time.. i was watching this while the mid 90's wrestling was on and by the time we got sky 1 it was the attitude era. Then i stopped watching it before it got to the cena era lol
I was 11 when this happened, and was gutted when Beffcake won. The "Perfect" record taken by a totally average wrestler. Just look at Perfect selling for him. I thought Perfect had it won with the scroll to the kisser!
@20EFC good point but I was at MSG in March of 1990, before WM6, Perfect lost to the Ultimate Warrior so I'm afraid the perfect record was ruined before this match.
@jckoby What! Thats even worse than losing to Beefcake ha ha. I knew he had been beat before but from what I remember it was only on t.v that he had his perfect record (I think). I remember some of the interviews going on about it. These were the glory days. Thanks for the info.
Beefcake gets very little respect today, but the fact is that he was way over with fans at this time. I was a fan then. When he was a heel in the 80's he was one of those that people wanted to like, but he was a good heel. When he became a face, people were behind him but his injuries and the move to WCW without an identity killed his career. That's the whole story. Beefcake was more liked than Perfect was hated, like it or not.
This was probably the biggest win for Brutus Beefcake. Unfortunately, he lost a lot of momentum due to the accident that followed. He was also promised a couple times a run with the IC belt, but fell through due to injuries each time. I always wonder the "what ifs" back then.
Curt Hennig, not a stooge. Beefcake, entire stooge with a gimmick that was so ridiculous. Mr. Perfect was really above average in everything but Beefcake couldn't even wear tights that weren't pink and years later still wore ones that had the holes/openings in them. Real life, Hennig has his hand raised in my opinion. Great person, Wade Boggs can attest and Bret Hart can do that for his wrestling. Plus if you know that Jesse liked Hennig, you know how good he was.
@jgtdec29 Being "Perfect" at everything was his gimmick...what the hell are you talking about...He used to pretend to throw football passes to himself that were 100 yards!!! Can he wrestle?? Hell fuckin yeah...but he definetly had a gimmick.
Now Bret Hart...Thats a guy who was 100 % gimmick free...He had to play up Fueds with Vince to keep a story line...because he was straight wrestling no b.s.
@osaji922 That was a "nickname"...Not a gimmick...A gimmick is pretending to be a barber and carrying Huge Scissors...or wrestling as a clown...Did Bret Hart ever bring guns, knives, or anything that would be involved in a "Hit" to the ring??...Did the "Anvil" carry and Anvil to the ring?? Nicknames are not gimmicks...and im not saying it in a cocky way...This is just a normal reply..Thanx for the feedback..keep it coming.
@MrSlik25 I think a nickname is just as good as a gimmick. A wrestler can be a nickname more often than be a gimmick like Stone Cold, rattlesnake, heart break kid, or brahma bull. It's when wrestlers like Cena come along which worries me. At first he was a rapper but what the hell is he now? Just a normal guy? Boring
@osaji922 You are right..a good nickname is just as beneficial to a wrestlers career as a good gimmick...but they are not the same thing...and as far as Cena...people can only listen to a white guy rap for so long then it becomes "acting black"...and then you are no longer respected.
At the :33 second mark there is my Daughter on my shoulder....we were in the 5th row at....the next day at Daycare....many of the kids and Parents said they saw us....so did my Nephew Terry J.!We were also on the Big Screen at Skydome.
no one could sell a move like Mr Perfect.... he made even the most average of wrestlers look amazing !! if one guy deserved so much from this buisiness it was Mr Perfect!!
THIS WAS BUILDING UP TO BE A REALLY GOOD FEUD-TOO BAD WRESTLING FOR BRUTUS WAS CUT SO SHORT BUT IM SURE HE IS MORE HAPPY EVERYDAY TO BE ALIVE AFTER JULY 4TH 1990
Say what you want about Brutus, he was very over as a face at this point. Regardless of Hogan possibly 'getting him in', you have to run with the ball and have a certain something yourself that people cannot give you to be successful. I think Brutus carried his own before his unfortunate accident, and he also had a good promo (for the time)
Same with another guy by the name of The Honky Tonk Man. They needed an IC champion and Hogan pointed at Honky and said: "What about him?" Honky took the football and ran with it, becoming the second biggest draw in the WWF at the time, selling out arena after arena without Hogan on the card.
This may have already be said, but they used the ring post bump as the finish. Check out Jerry Lawler vs Curt Hennig for the AWA championship. The same ring post bump cost Curt the title. He always made sure to make the other guy look believable. One of the best sellers, and could carry just about any match. He still is truly missed.
Perfect - the most under appreciated wrestler of his time. What a fantastic charismatic, technical & agile wrestler. A great heel he really really worked the heat from the crowd, was a real worker & sold every move & more importantly made his opponents look good .
Beefcake was the greatest!! To bad he got in that accident . He would of made a good heal world champ to. For sure a good face ic champ! Besides Hogan , warrior, Savage, He was just as big as a name back then. He still my fav!! You dont hear a pop like this no more.

Brutus beefcake was overrated...he had no business going over against Mr. Perfect.
According to Bret Hart's book, Beefacke was originally Hlk Hogan's "man slave". Carrying his bags and following him all over like a puppy dog. Matter of fact, that may be the reason, Brutus got his big push in then WWF.
It was Booked as a fluke win so Perfect loosing here didnt make a difference plus this was Beefacake at his peak and faces should always go over to end a feud regardless so it was the right result
I think they were thinking about giving Mr. Perfect a run for the title but alas it was the same time they were plotting Hogan/Warrior. He did hold the IC title and as far as I am concered far better talent held that belt.
Nah, he definitly oversold moves a lot, but that's what made him exciting to watch. I think it probably takes more athleticism to sell a move than it does to perform them in many instances. He was the best at getting beat up. So many guys today don't know how to sell move it would seem. They just pretend punch each other like drunken monkeys. I miss Perfect!!!
Next to Ric Flair, I love watching Mr. Perfect get hammered. He can make any wrestler and any match 10x more exciting by the way he sells moves. They don't make em' like that anymore....
Good match while it lasted...it's a shame it ended too soon. The ending was anti-climactic, too...the leverage move into the turnbuckle was neither a finisher nor even a high impact move (it was used as a regular move by many wrestlers back then).
Considering Mr. Perfect's status, plus the high profile nature of the event, the match should have been longer, and had a more satisfying conclusion.
this, actually, was not Perfect's first loss. There was a MSG house show in March of 1990 where he lost to the Ultimate Warrior and there was a house show in Feb ( LA i think ) where Hogan beat him.
WCW ruined beefcake's career. This guy was super-popular in the late 80ies. He would be a legend today without his accident and that horrible WCW-run. They just didn't have a clue of how to use him, so they gave him a new gimmick every two months, one of them worse than the other
I totally agree with you 100%. Brutus was my favorite wrestler when I 1st started watching W.W.F and was happy to see him on WCW but the fact that Vince wouldn't let him use the Brutus Beefcake name in WCW was wrong. What did the (WWE) think they were gonna do? Replace Brutus (Ed Leslie) with a new wrestler like the Ultimate Warrior?

@marynshmaryn Hennig is def bigger than Ultimate Warrior...to any fan of the 80's and 90s. Hogan heh Hogan is only as big as he is because of Vince McMahon. Hogan is mainly rememberd for WM 3 and slamming Andre...without Vince Hogan wouldn't have been SHIT..would still be wrestling in the AWA
@marynshmaryn I don't know if he was the best wrestler ever to not win the title...
but I can't really find an argument against it. The only knock was that he wasn't all that hot of a heel. In fact they paired him with theknow it all light in the loafers Genius, FULL OF WISDOM AND REKNOWN, to keep the crowds from cheering him. Like Hart and Macho Man people appreciated and respected his in ring skills thus it made it hard to boo him.
You really see the giant leap of difference in wrestling today and back then when you watch these old matches. WWE is shit. Its all about panties/bikinis matches and mic skills. John Cena and The Rock can't wrestle for shit.
One of the biggest injustices in WrestleMania history. I dont care what anybody says or does. Dump this comment I dont give a shit. Mr. Perfect one of the greatest WWE Champions that never was.
Brutus Beefcake - greatest IC champ that never was. He was supposed to have wrestled for it at both Summerslam 88 and 90. Neither happened in the end.
@rybonation When looking back at this, I wonder if the reason Beefcake was put over Perfect was because Warrior was getting put over Hulk Hogan, Since Beefcake and Hogan was always super tight. I'm thinking this was to "sweeten the deal" for Hogan losing to Warrior.
So you see, it was because of this match that Perfect and Beefcake were supposed to face off again at Summslam that same year, only this time, it was for the Intercontinental title!
This was the first match televised where perfect got his so called perfect record broke. of course Brutus was better, that's why he won. Bruti was the best bar none.

@marynshmaryn I do agree he was a great wrestle I think when he was in WCW he should've have held the TV and U.S. titles on more than 2 occassions.

JoshOrtiz88 2 years ago 6
This was'nt an injustice at all. If someone was gonna end Perfect's winning streak i'm glad it was Brute-Eye.
Sucks this was Ventura's last WWF PPV.
steeltownbrown52 2 years ago 4
Yeah, it should've been Hogan defending the WWE Title against Mr. Perfect, not that Ultimate Warrior.

Can't argue with the main event. Yeah Perfect is 10 times the wrestler warrior is, but warrior was a world wide phenoninom

Brutus vs. Warrior would have been interesting if they had done Hogan vs. Perfect.

Brutus Beefcake - greatest IC champ that never was. He was supposed to have wrestled for it at both Summerslam 88 and 90. Neither happened in the end.
kelman727 2 years ago 2
perfect got robbed, he is the best wrestler of all time, period.
rybonation 2 years ago 6
yes he is

@rybonation When looking back at this, I wonder if the reason Beefcake was put over Perfect was because Warrior was getting put over Hulk Hogan, Since Beefcake and Hogan was always super tight. I'm thinking this was to "sweeten the deal" for Hogan losing to Warrior.

Still though this has to be consider, one of, if not the BEST, match of Ed "Brutus the Barber" Beefcake's carrer.

@rybonation Perfect always got robbed. I hate Vince Mcmahon.

So you see, it was because of this match that Perfect and Beefcake were supposed to face off again at Summslam that same year, only this time, it was for the Intercontinental title!
RoyStantz 3 years ago 5
