I use wallpaper paste. Soak the whole thing completely in it, and then lay it out on a surface covered with cling film for a couple of days. You can also shape your work around moulds for a 3D finish. Works very well with felt too. Sets pretty hard!
I use liquid concentrated starch. Pour it into a plastic bowl with a lid(to keep whatever is left over) and put my flake in and make sure it gets saturated. Squeeze it and lay it on styrofoam packing squares. (good way to recycle and repurpose those) print off a geometrically perfect graph and put plastic wrap over and tape the wrap underneath. let dry 24 hours and then flip it over to continue to dry. spray glitter when dry.
An easier way to get a light, but even, dusting of glitter would be to get a really thick blush or kabuki brush and a bowl and put the glitter in the bowl, dip in the brush, then shake the glitter over the snowflake or even paint the glitter on.
very pretty i love it / i can see if joining a few together it would be a pretty candy dish-garland for a staircase a wreath you have gotten my imagination flowing - AGAIN! :) tysm Mikey n Dan <3 hope you will have a beautiful holiday(s) and a blessed new year................. a appreciative fan *<: )
Hi! Thank you for inspiring me! I definetly want to do that, BUT i wish you would do a tutorial on how to crochet a snowflake too. For beginners it's much easier to follow a video tutorial than to read directions. Anyway thank you :)
This year I have been mixing Modge Podge and water to make a thinner glue mixture, soaking the snowflake in that and squeeze it out, then I pin it down and use the thicker glue/water over the top. I havent had to turn them over at all.
Also wanted to add it takes a little longer to dry but you save yourself some work as you don't have to re-pin it in order to glue the backside. I've also mixed my glitter in with the glue to speed up the process
I've done crochet Christmas ornaments in the past and found it much easier to mix the glue and water in a ziplock bag then put the crochet work in the bag and squeeze it and work it around until it is saturated. I squeeze off the excess back into the bag for the next piece. Then I stretch and pin and block it. Easier than painting the glue around the pins IMO
@jcrefasi1 I agree. I put my glue and water mix into an old bowl or plastic container and mix it in with my hand (But I love to get gloopy!). I do my glittering and decoration once it's all dry and that way I can be more precise with the placement of any embellishments because it is easier to work with a stiffened flake (!)
Love it!! Such a pretty project. Lots of possibilities for customizing/tweaking. And you are just adorable with the glitter excitement (I can relate!!) :D
I use modge podge, thinned with water and dip it... then squueze it out, block it, then spray with clear varnish for ornaments.

When I watched your video, it would not load past 0:49, so I could not harden the snowflake. Could you please tell me how, Mikey?

Mike, the non-stick foil works well. I also use styrofoam vs. box lid. It's so much easier to pin and unpin on that surface.

Another time saving tip; Spray starch. You can get it in the laundry section at most stores. works very well to stiffen up crochet.

What about using T-pins? Wouldn't they be easier to insert and remove?
