@sweetlove1171 Oh how true! Growing up, my three favorite artists were Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross. Stevie now holds the top position obviously since the other two have sadly passed. But it's nice to hear of other fans of these wonderful human beings.
Stevie Wonder's version is a rougher... more "EVERY MAN'S" version.... But still I LOVE this version. Luther made everything smooth.... and I FEEL him in this...
@cocoagirl61660 That's true. But we must always give the ultimate crown to the originator and that's why Stevie gets it..but I agree Luther's voice sounds like warm chocolate just cascading down the ears..I feel like crying for joy and pain in the same action...
@csappleton Yes, there was a singer who topped Luther....his name was Nat King Cole, a SUPREME singer! I'm not saying Luther was not talented or great in his own right...he sure was, and I am a huge fan of his. However, when it comes to smooth-as-silk vocals and perfect delivery EVERY time, Mr. Cole cannot be beat. He will always be tops on my list!
luther did a great job on this song. Definitely gave it soul and heart. Same with stevie,
donell, and tevin.
in fact, it would of been nice if they had luther, stevie, donell, and tevin sang this song together at the bet awards or something before luther's death. Think of how awesome it would of been.
Luther Vandross may be the greatest pure singer of all time. His voice is a perfectly tuned instrument with just the right amount of style that makes him unique. That's why Dionne Warwick simply called him, "The Voice". Despite all this, Stevie Wonder's original version of this is still the best. I have listened to about 6 versions, and none have the heartfelt soul and longing combined with the improvisation of the original artist's vision. Luther's version is beautiful, Stevie's is timeless!!
i was priviledged and honored to watch the legendary luther vandross live in concert in 2002. gerald levert was one of his opening acts along with angie stone. they all killed it. it was a taste of heaven that night. i will never forget it. hmmmm...........
Stevie, Donell or Luther... It don't matter to me, they all sing it with soul!
Reminds me, more & more how loving & being loved, is a blessing... Makes me happy & sad, realising, how lucky I have been for the love once shared from that exceptional...someone, who makes you weak!
Luthers gave it soul! Stevie sings with heart! & Donell gives it beat! And all knocks you off your feet.
I don't want to bore you with my trouble; there's just something about your love that makes me weak!
A matured, soulful sound, that can't be matched. He is another great legend. Another great artist, that will always be missed. Love the matured sound of this man's voice.
Stevie was a genius at writing great songs, his version can not be matched. However, Luther was a vocal genius and can not be compared to anyone of his time.
LOL I understand you are a Luther fan but there are MANY that have/had just as good or better voice than Luther. I'm sorry. One artist that comes to mind in particular is Donny Hathaway.
You must be out of your mind, if you think Donny Hathaway had a better voice than Luther. Everybody knows that Donny was good, but let Luther take at crack at "This Christmas" or " A song for you" and I bet you it would sound way better. He has that touch that nobody else has when it comes to singing. You cannot be serious with this comment. Donny Hathaway doesn't have the ability to make an original song sound better than the original artist. LUTHER DOES!
Luther Vandross remade maddddd songs that people thought was his, originally, because he did such a great job, that the original artist became null and void. Donny Hathaway, as much as I like him, COULD NOT DO THAT! As a matter of fact, due to the difference in octave range, Donny Hathaway shouldn't be compared to Luther Vandross, because there's no competition. I could understand if you said Freddie Jackson or something, but not Donny.
PLEASE, Donny didn't NEED to remake anybody's songs for people to know how great he was!!! Donny Hathaway is a legend! and his career was only 1/4 of Luther's because of this untimely passing. And as far as range, there was not much if any difference!!! THE ONLY REASON Donny Hathaway can not be compared to Luther is due to the fact that his career was cut so short, so he didn't have the time to do a lot of remakes. He was singing ORIGINALS that made HISTORY who people such as Luther covered!!!!
Aniother person who could sing just as good as Luther if not better is the late JOHNNY WILDER JR. of Heatwave; but there again he did not have the success of Luther due to an accident that cut his career short. But he had it all, and can truly be compared to Luther because their vocal styles were somewhat similiar. Go listen to Always and Forgever (live version), Sho nuff must be love, Mind Blowing Decisions, you'll see what i'm saying if you have an open mind :)
Yes Yes Yes! His vocals were awesome!! You are referring to Gerald Alston! I especially love the song, It feels so good to be loved so bad. He's ANOTHER one who's vocals rank up there with Luther's as well!!! See what people need to realize, is just because a person obtains a certain amount success, fame, fortune, or notoriety for a talent or skill doesn't neccessarily mean that no one else in the world can match or top them! But sometimes people put celeberties on pedastals.
@Msredhoney720 actually, Luther's version of Always and Forever is vocally more challenging because he actually raises it a few notes across the board. the "share tomorrow together" part on Luther's is absolutely transcending and unparalleled by any other artist
@Msredhoney720 i respect your decision but dont thinks its even close, luther si one of the greatest singers of all time and his tone and unique can never be duplicated watch him live in his younger days before he was plague with health problems
You are not even old enough to make that comment! The original artist was probably null and void TO YOU because you have never heard of them!!!! LOL Listen sweetie, go listen to some Peabo Bryson, Jeffery Osborne, O'Jays and understand that Luther aint the only one! as a matter of fact Eric Benet can match Luther too, you should know who he is.
Alright, first off, I'm using somebody else's account, because I didn't bother to sign up for my own. I'm 27, not a female, and I know what the hell I'm talking about. Nobody is putting Luther on a pedestal for his fame. I'm judging off of sheer talent alone. Yes, the other singers that you are speaking about are good, but vocally, they can't FUCK WITH LUTHER VANDROSS. That's not a diss to them, it's the truth. And the fact that you said Eric Benet sounds just as good as Luther, is CRAZY!
EVERYBODY, GO AND LISTEN TO JOHNNY WILDER JR. SING "ALWAYS AND FOREVER" LIVE, AND THEN GO AND LISTEN TO LUTHER SING IT, AND TELL ME WHO'S VERSION IS BETTER.
What you need to understand is that I do not judge off of popularity. If that was the case, then I would say that Michael Jackson was the best "singer" in the world, which definitely is not true. There are a few other singers that sound good to great, but when it comes to power, range, effortless execution, (for male singers), then
This has been a nice little debate; but REALLY at the end of the day it all just boils down to PERSONAL OPINION! However; if you match any of these singers note for note they can sing just as well as Luther but because Luther may have had a more fresh and updated overall sound your ear is automatically hearing everything, where as I am filtering OUT all of the production and the fluff, listening with a musical ear to just the vocals.
OMG, are you trying to tell me that I'm subjective to Luther Vandross because of his so called "FLUFF!" Seriously, you previously put Eric Benet and Luther in the same sentence. That alone, shows that your musical ear needs some serious fine tuning. Did it ever occur to you that I, myself, know how to sing and what it takes to be a decent to great singer? I'm not going off of "FLUFF," I'm talking only what I know! Everything that I said is pretty much a FACT, not an opinion. Also
This has nothing to do with a "fresh and updated overall sound," because Luther Vandross (as well as all of the singers that YOU previously mentioned) still sounds better than any of the top 10 male R&B artist that are out today (excluding Jaheim, because Jaheim isn't a lightweight himself). Now back to my "Personal Opinion" (yeah I'm good with this quotes, lol!) about Luther Vandross, If you ask any/all great artists, who's the best male singer EVER, guess who's name
comes up more than anyone elses? Take Patti Labelle (who's arguably the best female R&B singer on record) for instance, She's someone that has a lot of credibility given her background. When she was asked who the best male singer was, guess what she said? I'm sure you already know the answer to that grasshopper. Msredhoney720, you need to understand that I'm not a new jack, and I know my shit. P.S. if we were in person talking, all of my quotations, would become "air quotes!" LOL
Patti is an excellent ENTERTAINER BUT NOT NECCESSARILY THE BEST VOCALIST ON RECORD!!!! Go listen to RACHELLE FERRELL! My listening ear is just fine. TRUST ME! YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR SHIT AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED AND YOU ARE A NEW JACK ALL DAY LONG!!!! IM FINISHED WITH YOU AND THIS DEBATE. JUST GO DO SOME LISTENING TO SOME ARTISTS OTHER THAN THE ONES YOU HEAR ON THE RADIO EVERYDAY!!!! CASE CLOSED!!!!!!
@Msredhoney720 A lot of people r sleeping on Eric Benet becaws they have never heard his albums which we dont here on the radio. Eric Benet can Blow. (Wipe yor Tears away) find it! Luther is a legend- he came out @ the right time 4 his style, thats all.
He start with a Stevie Song end up lutherized it -- it still okay, But i would have loved it better without the beat at in the middle and in the end! Brian Mc. Knight does a great cover of this song unplugged.
I like Stevie's the best. I wish luther kept this like the start of the song...almost accapella. the music makes it corny. I don't like donell's that much.
Each one that has sang this song has done their own style and they all have come over pretty good. I like them all because they have their own unique style and great voices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did not know he covered this song. He sounds pretty good but my favorite version is Donell's and I'm sorry but I have to say Stevie comes second. Sometimes the is not the best. But he is a legend none the less.
ok you people must be maddd crazy to ever say that someone out performed Stevie on Stevie song, the man is a legend, stevie could do this song live right now and just fuck it to pieces man he has mad vocal skills. i would say Tevin's version is great, Luther is good, and Darnel Jones comes close. But Stevie owns them all, man not many people can take on MR>Stevie boy Wonder!
I've got to admit this is a very decent version of an excellent song. It's always been a fave of mine since I bought Songs in the Key of Life in the 70s.
I used to watch Grammy Awards or American music award when I was a kids from Japan. And I and my sister used to talk about him ,,this year he is getting skinny and this year he is getting fat..like that it's a nice memory we were looking forward to seeing him. He is a most great singer I miss him.......
who's mama DIDN'T love Luther? The reason I love him is because my mom played his records when I was growing up... Too bad music today is not romantic anymore...
There is really no comparison between the three versions. Donnell does a more hip hop version; Stevie has a more old school/oldies feel and Luther does the true R&B version. Truth be told; it all depends on which mood I am in in deciding which one to listen to.
I love and enjoy both Stevie and Luther's versions of this truly magical song. Only Luther can add such heart and soul to a song, Luther isn't a mortal, he's a musical God. There's no other explanation for such musical talent and skill.
you cant compare....glad stevie wrote and recorded it....and also great luther covered it...checkout burt him covering burt b's anyone who had a heart...magical
Luther Broke it down, slow start, moderate tempo, then slowed it down again. He had a very special way of arranging songs, his and espcially cover songs!
Yes..it belongs to Stevie Wonder originally, but Luther made it new...his cadence, his eloquent phrasing and the heartfelt sensuality is unmatched~..I miss his voice enriching the world.
Of course Luther was great. That man can turn any song into something heartfelt. His version of Creepin is incredible but this has to be near his best cover. I still prefer Stevie's though cuz I like the piano in the original.
i love both versions, how can we put two geniuses against each other. i love luther and i love stevie and i love both versions this song is just on of the best songs ever written. i love you, i love you, i love you, more and more.
La Stevie's version of this song was nice, but, Luther has reinvented it. I love his use of strings here. They sound so beautiful. Heck, the melody just sounds so immaculate. And. all underneath Luther's gorgeous voice. Wow! Yes, Luther had the ability to take an already great song and make it outstanding, much better than the original version, like he has done with this song here.
I did not know that this was Stevie Wonder song. I just download this song a week ago, I fell in love it the first time I heard it. Luther Vandross sang lots of people songs better. The only song to me he did not do better was "Endless Love". All the others he make then better!!! Luther RIP!!!!!!!
Luther makes this song sound like Stevie Wonder never made it or sang it, just as he does with other artist 's songs. I call it originality at it's most creative best! You just gotta bobb yo head tho' (laugh
Wink! Wink! YOU are welcome, any way Luther sounds good singing the alphabet song, the Barney song or whatever. Marcus Miller pushed Luther to sing his heart out even more than Luther was planning on doing. Mark playing the guts out of that Fender Bass.
How is it even possible to NOT be a Luther Vandross fan?

He start with a Stevie Song end up lutherized it -- it still okay, But i would have loved it better without the beat at in the middle and in the end! Brian Mc. Knight does a great cover of this song unplugged.

I LOVED LUTHER VANDROSS, GREAT SINGER, and his tunes got me loads of shags in the 1980s. His voice was amazing, a real gift. God Bless Ya Luther.

I like Stevie's the best. I wish luther kept this like the start of the song...almost accapella. the music makes it corny. I don't like donell's that much.
GoneNuckingFuts 2 years ago
in my oppinion donnell sang it the best but luther's version was made for ur system. it just has this undeniable knock 2 it.

SECOND think of someone you like.
THIRD tomorrow that person will ask you out or say they love you.

Each one that has sang this song has done their own style and they all have come over pretty good. I like them all because they have their own unique style and great voices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God Bless Luther. What a blessing he was to us. His voice is impossibly beautiful. Luther was such a big part of my young life in the 80's.

I did not know he covered this song. He sounds pretty good but my favorite version is Donell's and I'm sorry but I have to say Stevie comes second. Sometimes the is not the best. But he is a legend none the less.
monuine 3 years ago
ok you people must be maddd crazy to ever say that someone out performed Stevie on Stevie song, the man is a legend, stevie could do this song live right now and just fuck it to pieces man he has mad vocal skills. i would say Tevin's version is great, Luther is good, and Darnel Jones comes close. But Stevie owns them all, man not many people can take on MR>Stevie boy Wonder!

I've got to admit this is a very decent version of an excellent song. It's always been a fave of mine since I bought Songs in the Key of Life in the 70s.

NinaL8z 4 years ago 2
Of course Luther was great. That man can turn any song into something heartfelt. His version of Creepin is incredible but this has to be near his best cover. I still prefer Stevie's though cuz I like the piano in the original.

Luther RIP!!!!!!!
phyllis611 4 years ago
could you send me the version you downloaded?

Luther makes this song sound like Stevie Wonder never made it or sang it, just as he does with other artist 's songs. I call it originality at it's most creative best! You just gotta bobb yo head tho' (laugh

Wink! Wink! YOU are welcome, any way Luther sounds good singing the alphabet song, the Barney song or whatever. Marcus Miller pushed Luther to sing his heart out even more than Luther was planning on doing. Mark playing the guts out of that Fender Bass.
