Years after the "marrying his 13 year old cousin" scandal Tom jones told how he was 1 of the teens in the London audience but unlike the others he did not protest Jerry's appearance. He was there to hear the music.
When he married his cousin (she was a 2nd or 3rd cousin), who was 13, the biggest issue in his community was that he wasn't legally divorced from his first wife. In the south, in those days, 13 year old girls getting married, while not an everyday occurrence, wasn't terribly unusual either. People try to judge it by today's standards. It was the Brits who made the big deal of it, refusing to attend his shows, which in turn made bad publicity back in the states. He never quit. Good for him.
Love this song. And to think that JLL's career was dead for years because he married his 13-year--old (second?) cousin, circa 1958...people probably wouldn't blink an eye these days.
@soaringvulture You got THAT right - he thought he could actually get away with marrying his 13-year-old COUSIN, and this was 52 freaking years ago! If he weren't famous, it probably wouldn't have been a big deal. But the guy was HUGE at the time and it just stopped his career in its tracks. I guess he just wasn't thinking, or else he was thinking w/ the wrong head, so to speak...lol.
At 1:59 - 2:01 , for a split second he turns into the old killer again.

@BerlinLynn Well, yeah, he's a rocking genius but you still can't get away with marrying a 13-year-old; that's pretty freaky territory.
