"Angel" does not necessarily denote good spirits, it just means a messenger of a god, and the show only used Christian symbolism as a theme rather than to disparage.

The only thing that's I find strange is that the English dub made Misato blurt out borderling sacrilege, like "It's an Oni, a Japanese Devil", "Acts of man are greater than acts of God" and "God's gift isn't coming", when in the Japanese version, she doesn't say that stuff.

But the show still rocks.
