Thankyou tremendously for bringing back great memories of blasting this album through my bic speakers back in '79! I played this tune on my gibson 'johnny smith" guitar along with the record ,and I did not know of the existence of this video which shows Pat and the'boys' at their high mastery and love of music.
Who needs anti-depressants when you have Pat Metheny and Co. and their music full of life, positivity, and melodic wonder? I only need put on songs such as this and the day - and life - is fantastic. Thx for posting, cashberg! Love this concert series from Hamburg.
Looking for another Pat Metheny song here on YT (don't know the name, but I'm sure I'll find it) I ran across this gem. In fact, this song was my introduction to Pat when I'd hear it on a jazz station while living in San Antonio, TX during my Air Force days back in 1980. Haven't heard this in years! You can't go wrong with Pat. All his music is simply beautiful, almost other worldly. But because this was the first song I heard of his, it will always be my sentimental favorite.
Awesome music, man! Thanks for posting! Who all are the musicians in the band? I know who Pat Metheny is, but who is on bass guitar, keyboard and drums?
@Seattlecarnut Mark Egan on bass, Danny Gottlieb on drums, and Lyle Mays on keys. Lyle Mays is still in the Pat Metheny Group, but Danny Gottlieb and Mark Egan do solo/sideman work these days.
I saw the PMG on a rainy Friday evening at Berklee PC, April 80. Pat had decided to do the two shows to prepare for a tour of Japan. We expected Phase Dance to be the opener but he opened up with Heartland and Airstream. The only other time I saw him play it was with Perri in summer 85 on the Boston Common.
Very much thanks for bringing back the good old PMG times with that great stuff.
As a matter of fact, i have a big part of this performance taped on video, but due to its age (i recorded 1984) it's more or less gone :-((. The show opened (of course) with Phase Dance. Please post that tune !!
There are a few other clips up here from this show. If you search for Metheny Hamburg 1980 you should be able to find them. I will be posting some more, though.
Jaco was Metheny's first bassist, and appears on his first album "Bright Size Life". I'm sure it's no coincidence Metheny went with a replacement with a similar sound.
Pat in fact got Mike Richmond as his bass player after Jaco (Mike Richmond was the first in the PMG), and next he got Eberhard Weber to play on his album Watercolors. Mark Egan became the touring group's bass player in early 1977 after Eberhard declined becoming a permanent member of the PMG in favour of leading his own group.
Jaco was not Pat's bassist exactly. they were friends and mates/teachers at Miami University. It was quite naturally that Jaco played in first Metheny's album "Bright size life". Bob Mosses was on drums
best ever

Man, Uncle Poe's looks like an interesting place. It's not there anymore, is it? If it were, I'd go.

I envy those that got to see the group in the 70's early 80's

@seabobinsd
You envy me, then. Those shows were incomparable. Then things got ponderous and weighed down by technology and "influences."
Sad but true.
The Way Up, though, was a step in the right direction after twenty years of Group mail-ins.

That bass tone sounds like Jaco Pastorius. The bassist looks a bit like Jaco as well.
