Count Dante was more B T Barnum than Miyamoto Musashi. I have a bootleg copy of his book. I would not say it is anyway comparable to Go Rin No Sho. Although to his credit, he introduced martial arts to the US in it's early development. I would say he was a spokesman in the style of Charles Atlas.
keehan was a publicity magnet...an eccentric...but not a fraud. He was the only promoter of mid-west karate on a mass level until Jimmy Jones took the reigns. Jones was Keehan's student but took a different route than his instructor and Jones was no fraud either.
Hmm why would the deadliest man alive be found cowering under the desk in the dojo he attacked with him and a few of his students?...The same dojo where his student got killed. Granted, he new how and who to market to, but not the deadliest.
I was not there I do not know. But what do you do when the cops show up, a man is dead and you are already on a beef? Or maybe he was scared shitless. This is why we make documentaries. to explore these kinds of questions from every angle.
Shino, no problem dude. You say what you think. No harm. Deadliest man alive??? Do I know? Dante was a loveable(or hateable)huckster, PT Barnum or the martial arts scene...he was martial arts in Chicago for a short time. His story is the emergence of martial arts in the midwest. As for Ashida Kim, he is more interesting than a lot of people even realize. These things need to be investigated to get a clear understanding. One thing for sure, Ashida kept the Black Dragon Society name alive.
"see him fight or see him fight"?!! Fair point though. I have seen a clip of him fighting and he was fierce I'll give him that. He also had reasonable technique but he was also FAR from being the "dealiest man alive". I guess I would like to see a film of him, I was just annoyed because of the Ashida Kim nonsense on here and he's partly responsible for Kim! Sorry for my previous comment.
Why not. The worlds loves a great fraud. And then again, was he a partial or total fraud. Who knows for sure unless you research it? Did you ever see him fight or see him fight?

Keehan was not a fraud...he was the real deal. There is no doubt that he created a persona to market his dojo...but he was the real deal.

It is nostalgia for sure....I remember seeing him and his lion back in 1964 in his dojo.
What a character! I look forward to the documentary.
