theres a few different reasons ive heard about why he is called könig:
1. the germans during ww2 called the sniper vasily killed erwin könig because they didnt want to admit that their ace sniper had been killed.
2. because vasily called thorvald Herr Koning which is dutch for king and also pronounced the same as könig. both words meaning king of course.
personally i believe the first because of all of the research and books ive read says vasily killed thorvald and it was a cover up 4 morale

There debate weather König was even real. In Heer records there was no sniper with last name of König. But people say you cant find him because König real name could be Heinz Thorvald.
König had 400 kills

Why do you hate König? He had the same destiny like many other people had in WW II.
First, he lost his son, a young Leutnant, and then he was killed himself. I found in the movie he was played brilliantly, and I'm actually sad he died, wich not means that I'm a Nazi.
My greatgrandfather also died in Russia. He could live by now, but he fell near Moscow.
His Name was also König.

No, it was Konig, he was an instructor in Berlin. He was given all the intel the German's had on Cysev(?). The duel is almost accurate in the movie exept there's a burned out tank missing and Konig acctually gave his position away and was sniped, and he had an assistant.

konig was possibly a made up russian propaganda story. but the duel did happen though not with a major konig but SS sniper Colonel Heinz Thorvald (possibly konig but is up for debate)

the man who Vasiliy Zaitsev defeated in his famous sniper battle was indeed Heinz Thorvald. "konig" is not a name. its a word which means "king": in german.

Koning was indeed real,look theres tons of evidence to support his existence. The only evidence to say he was not real is that his name does not show he up on any records- Easy explanation,indeed the High ranks wiped his name off all their records-they were not going to say he was killed by Zaitsev. although most of the dueling in the film was fictional,the real Zaitsev did claim to have dueled with a sniper named Heinz Thorvald(the real 'mayor konig') killing him with the helmet on a stick trick.He went to Heinz's body and took his documents and rifle. thats how he found out he was the head of a sniper school in Berlin!

It's rumored and in stories that Koenig was real, but he wasn't Erwin Koening. His name was Thorvald Koening. Vasilli himself in a post-war interview and in his autobiography were said to have killed the Berlin Sniper School's trainer after he killed two of his men. I think that was as far as it went. Never specified precisely the correlation.

Good point, but zaitsev does not nessesarily know, that the gun "won't work" after a hit. Also, König won't know exactly if the gun is destroyed. Anyways, he could not escape from where he was.

It will destort the barrel enough, so that a following shot from zaitsev's rifle would burst the barrel or at least get stuck inside.

When i say "destroy" i mean "disable". Sure, a bullet won't make the Mosin explode to 1000 pieces. But if he hits the barrel of zaitsevs rifle, zaitsev could not shoot anymore.
