I want to thank you for posting this. My grandmother use to make this for me. And she passed last year so I was never able to learn how to make it. You made a family very happy posting this. Because Im the only one that cooks the dominican food. Thank you!!
I am very sorry to hear of the passing on of your grandmother, my condolences on such a loss; it is the very same reason, I wanted to make these videos before the recipe was lost with mama.
Now it is time for us, the survivors to take the reins and continue to make our own families contenet with these delicious foods.
Aloha!! I'm also from Hawaii, and yes Pasteles are very popular here. I live in Makaha, which is on the west side of Oahu. We have a lot of Puerto Rican families that reside here. On weekends there's a lot of roadside lunch wagons that sell Pasteles and Gandule Rice. My grandparents are originally from Puerto Rico, they resided in the Lajas area. Thank you so much for sharing this delicious recipe.
Aloha from a Rican? Wow! We certainly are good mixers!
From Lajas to Makaha, the blood strain continues to go with the flow.
It is quite interesting to know that even in Hawaii, our recipes are being prepared, cooked and sold along the roadside and are very popular; this ineed demonstates that we are all becoming one people, uniting with each passing day.
Awesome Video. I do have question, hope you'll answer.
1. In beginning you show you bought 2 containers of sofrito, then in video you show you added 1/2 a container into meat. But then it shows you using an empty container to add the water. So how much sofrito did you use, the 2 full containers into meat?
Sorry for the late reply but I never expected to get comments on these vidoes since I made them to preserve the recipe for my own family and this was the best place to store it at.
In response to your question, my mom never cooks by measurments, she tastes the food as she goes, so as for the amount of Sofrito, I'd say to trust your taste buds and add the entire 2 or less as you see fit. Great question.
I notice the Christmas decorations...very nice. I am assuming that pasteles are made during a special holiday tradition? Here in Hawaii, the pasteles are made whenever really, pretty much when the products are available. But they are mostly consumed on a "special day, birthday celebration, Christmas & New Years, as well as whenever....Thanks!
Yes pasteles are mostly during the Christmas Holidays but there are some families that make them whenever someone has a craving for them since they are hard to find and, if they DO find a place which sells them, they are usually costly, small and not very tastey.
So....Pasteles have made their way to Hawaii? That is very cool! Thanks for sharing.
i love seeing your papi. it's that time of year again. looking forward to passing the tradition down. Where was the coquito?
