@NastyGreaser This gnossienne was basically written for "Le fils des étoiles", then used for "Trois morceaux en forme de poire". See Ornella Volta's research work for more information (especially inside the "7 gnossiennes" piano music sheet edited by Salabert in 2006).
@Stunt. Don't get me wrong it can sound great on either. I just feel that an upright best represents his music, which to me is extremely intimate. Again, this is just personal opinion. When i think of a grand piano, i think of orchestra hall, not a smokey attic in late 19th century paris.
@SpiritOfYuta, in THAT case, I totally agree with you!! =D
Lately I'm playing this piece in an old piano (the piano maker who signs it died on 1892!) which I'm repairing in a lonely house (both of them not mine xD). Last time it was windy and stormy, and I just opened the windows in the room, and played it, with the sound of the trees shaking and the wind blowing as a background... You just can't (or probably you can!) imagine the feeling...No words for that.
For years I have been haunted by what has turned out to be Satie pieces used in TV and film. I especially love this lady's interpretations -- when she plays it is like praying. Does she record? I can't seem to find her...will someone please help this neophyte Satie lover?
She recorded a CD called "Initiés '88 - Initiés '99" (an update of an old disc), which has many Satie's pieces (not this one :( ). I've listened to many recordings of Satie...And by far these are the best ones, a fully comprehension of Satie with a perfect transcription into sound... :)
its really good i have the pdf of it. Its sweet! I personally would not have swung some of the eighth notes as much but its all there is out there until i put mine up! overall. nice job!
The Le Fils des étoiles incidental music (composed 1891) contains a Gnossienne in the first act. For this one the naming as "Gnossienne" is definitely by Satie (as apparent from the correspondence with his publisher). As a result of that, this music is sometimes known as the 7th Gnossienne. That part of the Le Fils des étoiles music was re-used as Manière de commencement ("A way to begin"), the first of the seven movements of the Trois Morceaux en forme de poire. (exerpt of wikipedia)

Saties Gnossiennes are one of the most beautiful pieces of music I know. I can only play his second. Didn't know a 7th existed until now. Thanks!

This is beautiful. A seventh Gnossienne? I never knew it existed. Can somebody please explain?
manchetknoop 3 years ago
There is a seventh Gnossienne. It exists. The first act of Le Fils des étoiles is called the 7th Gnossienne.
Buckley153 3 years ago 2
it was largely unknown untill the 70s or something when some guy, re-discovered it.
