Besides, all countries have their stupidities, like the Netherlands and their orange costumes, or the British and their fucked up accent, or France, with their midget president, or America, with all the fat blokes, ... . Every country is, in a way, a joke. We're just small, so it's easier to make fun of us.

I'll try to explain briefly.

Flemish is only one of our local Dutch dialects, besides Vlaams there's Limburgs, Brabants, Antwerps. The same continues in the Netherlands with Hollands, Limburgs, Brabants, Gronings, etc.

None of these are official languages, the standard language of FL BE & NE is Dutch (Nederlands). It our language too, historically we are the Southern-Dutch (Hollanders being the Northern-Dutch).

In short: saying our native language is Flemish is wrong, it's a local regional dialect (one of many in Belgium), not a language.

Hence my long-winded reply saying that Flemish is not a language, and from experience I know that foreigners think that every northern Belgian speaks Flemish and that they say Flemish to our Dutch, showing that they don't really comprehend what Flemish (Vlaams) means ;)

It's a convoluted subject, not really fit for discussion in a few YT comments :)
