This scene is kind of metaphorical for the story on the whole. When you've hurt everyone close to you and alienated yourself so deeply from society all you're left to do is beat on a brick wall and hurt yourself. Powerful!

I love Pacino, but I have never found him to be as committed as De Niro in anything. He has passion, sure, but I don't think anyone in late 20th century cinema can compare to Robert other than Brando or Nicholson.
He's saying "f*** your mother" to the cops because where he's from, that's an insult that would even make cops lose their cool and start beating the shit out of you. But it just doesn't work on them. He's so far away from home. I don't know if that feeling comes from LaMotta's book, one of the few people who worked on the script, DeNiro, Scorsese, or all of the above, but it's just part of the magic Deniro and Scorsese always seem to put on the screen.
It reminded me of my hospitalization. It's hard being misunderstood. Being in that padded room, To have your dignity taken away from you. When your angry at the world, most people don't understand that you feel like a victim because of victimization, and you want that empowerment. I'm just glad that Jake became at peace with himself and his past.

Sorry if I offended anyone saying this but the whole film is just overdramatic its annoying. It basically disgusted me from De Niro, I used to like him but hes just irritating now.

Amazing stuff. De Niro is just too god for words in Raging Bull. A special actor and a special film.
On the subject of best actors and the common fight-off between Pacino and De Niro. Between the two, De Niro is a million miles better than Pacino. They are all good for their own individual merits but I'd say there are a few actors better than Pacino. He is fantastic in Godfather but there are still others...Brando, Depp, Nicholson. All better in my opinion. De Niro and Brando- ultimate best.

When I first saw this scene, i thought it was great, but it didn't really hit me on an emotional level.
But then something really bad, though not nearly as severe as jail, happened to me and I was in such rage and sadness at the situation and one night I was alone and I just cried and screamed as loudly as possible coz I was so upset.
The next day I saw this scene again and cried. I realized what a fucking great emotional scene it was, it just captured my emotion so accurately.

The first time I saw De Niro in any movie was in, of all things, Meet the Parents, when I was 11. 5 years later, I saw Raging Bull and couldn't believe that the grumpy old man in that movie with Ben Stiller was such a great actor. It's not his fault that his recent movies haven't been too good, I guess that after a certain age, actors are universally typecast, which is sad.

I know this is no nice or smart behavior, but, keeping it honest, sometimes you just feel that way, you can't help it.. De Niro brings so much depth to Jake La Motta. I saw this movie with my friends once and after seeing it we were discussing La Motta in the movie and our opinions differed so much, as if we'd actually MET La Motta.
Without a doubt, the greatest performance I've ever seen. In ANY movie.
