  • Great playing man.

  • Thanks!

  • this helped me a lot

  • Thanks, I'm glad you got something out of it!

  • Man whatever you do please I beg you keep these vids coming dog!!!!!!!!! OFF THE CHAIN!!!

  • Thanks a lot! I haven't had a chance to record lately, but I'll be doing another pedal demo soon when I finish up this Germanium fuzz on the workbench.

  • Great demonstration Jay! The blue monkey was kind of trippin' huh! Don't let negative folks keep you from puttin' more vid's up. I enjoyed this one. You are an awesome guitarist and teacher. Remember Hater gotta hate....that's what that do. Keep up the great job Jay!!!

  • Nobody cares how you approach the guitar just like nobody cares how I approach the guitar.

What people do care about, however, is the music. That's it, nothing more, nothing less.

  • Where's your music posted?

  • You're avoiding my response. Nobody cares what your approach to the guitar is and it's simply idiotic of you to give a lesson on "dynamics" when every single guitar player in history has his/her own approach to the subject. Do you think you're approach is better than say somebody like Allan Holdsworth or Wes Montgomery? What makes yours so different.

People like you do videos like these to "stroke" their own ego. That's all it is, because you really don't know what you're talking about.

  • "Nobody cares what your approach to the guitar is and it's simply idiotic of you to give a lesson on "dynamics"..."--then don't watch it.

"Do you think you're approach is better than say somebody like Allan Holdsworth or Wes Montgomery?"

    --Absolutely not

    "What makes yours so different."

-- nothing in particular, just sharing for some friends at a forum.

  • "People like you do videos like these to "stroke" their own ego. That's all it is, because you really don't know what you're talking about."

-- I'm the least egotistical person you would ever meet, so, not the case.

Further, if it's "my approach," how would I not know what I'm talking about?

    Please site references.

Again, where is your music posted? without that as a reference, your comments hold no clout with anyone.

  • i do think that everyone can have a unique approach to guitar, or any instrument at all.

However dynamics is an important aspect of playing technique for any instrument. Even in crushingly heavy metal, many players are well aware of the dynamics.

If the finer points are forgotten, we will make a generation of shitty shitty art.

  • Thanks for checking it out. I know it's not much, but I was hoping a few people would get some use out of it. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • You forgot about the dynamics in the fret hand dude.

  • I guess I didn't get into that... you meaning like muted notes, harmonics, etc? I go over some of that in part 2. If you mean the Eric Johnson school of "your middle finger sounds different than your pinky..." I'm not sure I agree lol. This was just a quickie. Thanks, though.

  • No, I mean how you fret it. light (John Frusciante), normal, digging in (Marty Friedman). There is also tricks in vibrato that can make it sound like a wah (see Paul Kossoff) but it's more natural. Also the auto-flanging like Gary Moore. George Lynch is another but I'm not up on him. There is just so many more things you can do to add dynamics to your playing then rolling the volume.

  • Understood, like I said, this was just a quickie, and more or less in response to a forumite that said they never ever ever turned their volume knob down. The discussion could be endless, really.

  • True. Their are many things that I didn't list and probably a lot more that I don't even know about.

Good video though. I've noticed that a lot of the newer bands uses to many amps/channels/effects to get their sound when it a lot simpliar and more skill based to get the same "effect". I just like the more organic/natural tone of guitar into amp and using my finger and guitar's knobs to manipulate the tone.

  • oh my oh my!!! man i just love your rhythm tricks! any chance you have listened to robben ford? anyway i adore your stuff...really nice of you to explain the technique behind them...just keep 'em comin'...it's just 5 stars all the way...too bad you don't live in finland...that ts808 clone is out of this world...i was thinking of getting t-rex's alberta for tube screamer...what do you think?

  • Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. I actually haven't really listened to any Robben Ford, but I'll check it out. I'm not familiar with the T-rex pedals, but almost all of the "boo-tique" TS pedals are pretty much on par, from what I've seen. I did like the BBE Green Screamer, but haven't played much else.

  • what are you settings here (on the amp)?

  • Oh, goodness... I'm not 100% sure, I tweak occasionally. Probably about 9 or 10 on gain (these go to 12...), bass 9, mids 8, treble 5, reverb 3.5, volume 2. Somewhere around there.

I guess on an amp that only goes to 10, it would be like, gain 7, bass 7, mids 6, treble 3.5, reverb 3. The Classic 30 has a lot of highs to my ears, so I really roll them back--actually, I think that's all Peaveys, I do the same with my 5150.

  • I play a hamer ES335 copy thru a peavey classic 30.

  • Sweet! The longer I've owned my C30, the more I fall in love with it.Obviously, the ES style guitars and my Wolf are different beasts all together, though. I would imagine you'd need to keep your treble up lol. I'd love to hear that combo. Any vids posted?

  • I accidently wrote the comment on the ES335 logged in to my wife's acct....anyway I wanted to tell you about the Seymour Duncan twin tube...I just picked one up and it is awesome...I play in my church worship team and I share your view about dynamics but couldn't get enough dynamic range from my gear until now. You have to try one of these.

  • Man, I just saw this comment, sorry. I've heard great things about that pedal. The only gain pedal I have right now is a homemade booster that I occasionally use for leads. I've been looking into doing a tube OD, but haven't gotten around to it. I may get bored today and go to GC and play around with stuff I have no intention of buying lol.

  • great tone, i used to have a delta blues amp but it didn't have as much gain....are you going straight into the amp?

  • Thanks! Yeah, that's straight to the amp. Only mods are Sovtek tubes and a Sheffield speaker. I think they're 12ax7wa's which are a bit hotter than the stock tubes, though. Output tubes are just the plain Sovtek EL84's
