  • viola is great ;)

  • the point in which i was sold with this scene is when Meryl says, "Do you know what you're saying?"

  • Viola Davis' acting is stunning in this scene. Some might say all too subtle but she acts with her expressions alone. Next to Streep, who is chewing the scenery like mad in this scene as well as others, she comes off unbelievably natural.

    She deserved her nomination.

  • Hollywood has endless ways of depicting Black Woman as possessor of three fifths of a brain and White Woman as saint.

  • I am floored by this scene. Brilliant acting from Viola Davis.

  • Whoa. Did not know who Viola Davis really was until tonight seeing "The Help"! Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!

Now I remember Viola in Doubt, Eat, Pray, Love and others! Wow she is amazing!

  • I like how Mrs. Miller admits that her son was born that way

  • Two vastly different worlds almost converge. What an amazing scene.

  • Viola Davis really should have received an Oscar for this moment. She is absolute pure talent.

  • Oh my god! 2 of the best actresses in one powerful emotional scene! How did meryl and viola not win oscar for that scene alone! Especially viola, I mean the woman was in 2 scenes throughout the whole movie and left ppl crying in the theater. Maybe she'll get one for the help this year

  • I was watching that, and turn off the light by hollwood undead came on. Awkward moment.

  • The only problem I have with this movie, is that you never see one scene where Donald and his mother are together. I think Donald needed a bigger part, and I wish I would've seen a connection between Ms Miller and her son. It would've been a great scene......

  • Whatr a scene this was... what a creep Meryll Streep is. Viola Davis was great in this movie

  • East 177th Street Parkchester, The Bronx

  • Quite a feat~ completely stealing the thunder from Streep.

  • This movie rocked..a real nailbiter.

  • Viola Davis has talent to burn!

  • She will win an Oscar when she plays a prostitute or a psychopath.

  • @OKandNOWwhat Ain't that the sad truth.

  • @OKandNOWwhat So true. The Academy can't handle great black actresses playing strong, complex women; only pretty victims or hideous monsters (Halle Berry and Mo'nique).

  • @yourengland

Thanks for your reply. Viola Davis is portraying a maid in her new movie ("The Help"). I left out maid. That was the first role for which a black woman (Hattie McDaniel) received an Oscar. Or Ms. Davis could play a witch. that would be the other choice (Whoopi Goldberg).

  • @OKandNOWwhat , Psychic.

  • @yourengland Well it has nothing to do with the Academy. They dont select which roles black actresses get offered. They only reconzine achievement in the art. It more like Hollywood the machine can't handle it, but you can't wait for someone to feed you. You have to get up and get your own meal. More black people need to write stories that are important to them with the types of charater they want to see portrayed.

  • @FirstTeam4 Yeah but come on, even if they write more movies, those movies aren't going to be picked up by the big studios. What you have to do is diversify at the top. White male executives aren't going to care about roles for black women...in fact, history has shown that they DON'T. So roles are given to Halle Berry and Monique for playing welfare, pathetic black women.

  • @nadi1010 So you get it done yourself....who cares if the majors dont pick it up, like I said you can't wait for someone to feed you. You do it yourself. We have to create our own production companyies, studios, scripts, etc.. Halle and Monique dont represent all black people-just themselves. And sure the charaters they played really do exist so I'm cool with that.

  • @FirstTeam4 And historic show that black people dont come out to support good roles for black women, they dont see "The Great Debaters" they want to see "The Baby Boys". The sad truth.

  • @FirstTeam4 You make it sound so easy. Do you own your own production company? Even if you did, your videos would only be watched by a few people. When you have big production companies that sell their images to millions, those stereotypical representations are disseminated to far more people and have a far greater impact. And sure people exist that are like the roles that Mo'nique and Halle Berry played, but there are also black people who aren't like that and you don't get those images.

  • @nadi1010 Like I said, no one went to Great Debaters. No it's not easy. Its a very hard journey. But a worthy one. What are you suppose to do just give up and complain? That will get nothing accomplished. Oprah got it done, Tyler Perry, Spike Lee etc. You cant do anything to stop the studios except not go see or rent their depections if you dont like. Support more indie filmmakers.

  • @nadi1010 Sure you can't reach the masses like one of the majors but if your content is good then people will see it. You can't deny talent.

  • that one scene she blow so call great actress penelope cruz out the water on every movie she ever did viola should have won the oscar, but its all right something tells me she will one day and it will be outstanding!!!

  • As for Meryl Streep, she should of won that Oscar back in 09'. This was one of her best of her career.

  • Viola should have won or Amy for this, Penelope was great but not really a oscar-winning performance for me. Amy Adams was so damn good in this as the very honest, worried & innocent nun. Viola in this nearly 8-minute clip, stole this scene which is very rare to do with Meryl Streep in the same scene, the looks of WTF on Meryl's face in this scene tells you why she should have won. I would of like both Amy & Viola win in a tie.

  • omg my school is right theree i walk that path to home every day

  • Most people will say anyone that can hang with Meryl Steep is noteworthy, but in this particular scene, it was Meryl Streep who hung with Viola Davis...

  • i dont understand this scene! what is the concept behind it? the scene with the mother? its powerful but why? please someone, im 16, i wanna know.

  • For all of you having a hard time understanding the mother's thought process let me break it down for you. Contrary to the today's world that we live in, the 1960's was a down right hostile place for gay people. So you had a mother who had to choose between public school where he would get his ass kicked everyday for being effeminate and possibly one day face him being killed, or she could keep him in that school where he would at least be protected physically.

  • @Franco428 yeah, but he was being molested. how is that any better?

  • @tranurse , Was he really being molested.......or protected by someone who inspired hate in a paranoid nun? That's the great thing about DOUBT; it is its title. You never really know and are never really sure.

  • @lf1234 i figure the truth was somewhere in the middle. i think something inappropriate was going on, and i also think the mother was trying to protect her son from people who would go after him for being 'different'

  • The sister is more concerned with being right than actually helping anyone.

The mother is trying to find something good in this strange relationship by ignoring all the bad and boosting up the good.

Both have warped perceptions of the Father and donald's relationship, which makes this scene the best in movie history.

  • @egyptianpepsiking..... well I think they both had the right idea at heart but neither one was going about it properly. The mother thought she was protecting and helping her son. the nun thought she was doing the right thing by getting some alligation from someone against the priest so she could get rid of him when in fact there was NO evidence just speculation and speculation CAN BE intrepreted in so many ways.

  • This was one of the best scenes in motion picture history.

Both women shuld have won oscars for their performances.

  • @aloofbooks , I agree. at the end of Oscar night 2009 I was asking myself, "Why isn't there a statuette in Viola Davis' hand?" The same for Ms. Streep, who should've won her third with this film.

  • @lf1234 You know it!

  • @lf1234 Well, Viola will get one now that she's playing a maid in "The Help". When all else fails, fall back on one of the old faithfuls.

  • @ridedamaverick Which is sad. Viola Davis is such a phenomenal talent who deserves so much more. =(

  • viola davis is phenomenal actress, she deserved a oscar for this performance

  • my aunty!!! love you aunty viola.. im proud of you!!

  • This Sister is too cruel........ good job Streep!

and Viola is a great actress.

  • @tenddyson I didn't find the sister cruel. she was a true servant. hard, but not cruel.

  • Rent "Antwone Fisher", and skip to the part where Fisher finds his birth mother; Viola Davis speaks VOLUMES with nothing more than her eyes...PEACE.

  • Viola was snubbed! She's phenomenal in this clip.

  • I havet seen the film so I don't understand what the mother is saying. Is she saying her son is gay?????

  • @xxxsalmaxxx92 Yes, she also saying she accepted him as being gay.

  • @xxxsalmaxxx92 She is saying that he is gay

  • I am not usually into Meryl Streep films, not since "Silkwood" or "She Devil" but this was a pretty amazing film. Moves a little slow at times, but the acting is bar none by all the players. It deserved all the awards it received.

  • Viola Davis did a wonderful job, should've won a golden globe and sag award. Meryl Streep was wonderful in this film. This was one of her best films/roles! Defintley should've won an Oscar!

  • I'm not gonna I DIDN'T cry.....

  • my good I am impressed with Viola Davis' scene here. I just watched the film at home and had to research her. I am glad to see others rightfully astounded by her craftmanship and control. Just stunning!

  • yeah Viola Davis was superb in this scene. hell i think she should win the oscar even if winslet was nominated for "The Reader"

  • wow!!!....

  • Anyone who can hang with Meryl Streep in a scene that requires a lot of emotion like this one deserves an Oscar.

  • DAMN theyre so good.... DAMN

  • I still cannot fathom that she did not win every award for this performance. I have seen her in several other things since this, all of them stellar

  • Staggering performances. Great movie. It's too bad there's little market for this kind of serious and powerful film these days.

  • I get goosebumps everytime I watch this scene

  • She was robbed of an Oscar...

  • Viola davis got robbed blind for this !!!!

  • powerful acting, gets me every time,i love she says 'It's just til June"

  • @Latebargirl So much power and emotion when she says that at that sensitive moment.

  • This should have been the year that Meryl won her 3rd. She was fantastic in this film. She keeps getting snubbed and it's a little infuriating. There's no one better. But Viola Davis steals this scene with such power. If she had more screen time then she probably would have had it hands down. Penelope was all fire in VCB, but Viola was all heart and passion here. What a heartbreaking scene so indicative of the time in which the film takes place...

  • She's currently nominated for a Tony Award for Fences, in which she stars along side with Denzel Washington. I hope she wins another tony!

  • powerful scene, I love this move and yes she shud have won

  • amazing scene

  • I found this to be very thought provoking film and the acting was top notch. I agree that Viola is brilliant in her role, very moving and compelling. Everyone in the movie was excellent.

  • I watched this film last night and thought it was brilliant, even though I didn't really understand the ending. Did she cry because she had problems herself? Also, what was the clean, long nails thing about>?

  • @rudyprotrudy08

I read somewhere that there is a clue at the end, where Sister Aloysius shows her crucifix turned backwards. Here is what was suggested, and I think it is a good point:

Since Fr. Flynn actually got promoted, in spite of all Sister Aloysius does to bring him down, her unshakable faith in the truth and morality of the Catholic Church are what come into doubt. She is convinced that Fr. Flynn is guilty, but now has doubts about the integrity of the church.

  • @clydesight Yeh I suppose that is a good point and it does make sense. It definately is a thought provoking film and I am going to have to watch it again. Maybe more will sink in a second time round. Thanks.

  • @rudyprotrudy08 The sign of a rerally good movie is when you can watch it over and over and you get more from it each time. I have seen this movie three times, and every time I come away with new thoughts and ideas. The acting is so good in this one!

  • @clydesight I agree. I watched it again the other night and noticed things I didn't notice before. I got the impression that when she breaks down at the end she also maybe doubts herself. I let my mum borrow it and she absolutely loved it!

  • @rudyprotrudy08 The clean long nails thing was just him being a total creep.

  • Meryl Streep is my favorite actress, but when I saw this movie in the theater I thought, "My God, Viola Davis just blew Streep away." I was very disappointed when Davis didn't win the Oscar.

  • @blazerr I was like "who is this woman?" she's phenominal!

  • Wow!, Viola is such a great actress! Meryl is a great actress too. These women did a great job! I love Meryl, but the character she plays in this movie, well, I didn't like the character's approach with children. I kept wonderful what events had shaped her life into being so strict with children and so mistrustful of others. I like the way this movie ended. It lived up to its title. It kept my attention the entire time. Great job everyone! Wow!

  • Meryl should have won, hands down, for this. She's done many, many fantastic performances, but this particular one was just wonderful.....she's always #1 in my book. I'll always love her in "Out of Africa" with Redford. Another 5 star performance!!

  • She basically did win... 7 minutes onscreen to get an Oscar nomination. that's a win.

  • I'm auditioning for the role of Mrs. Muller next season. I don't know if I'll get it but I'll try!

  • Sr. Aloysius reminds me of a good chunk of the nuns who taught me. Always so right. Never looking @ the other side of the story. Oh so quick to think that their suspicions are totally the right ones. It never occurred to them throughout my whole educational life, that they can be utterly wrong.

  • @robynsegg Funny you should say that- I know a gay guy who went to a NY Catholic school at exactly this time, and he came away from the film with the opposite view. He said he'd met priests like PSH's character, and you'd run a mile rather than trust in a figure like that. He figured Streep's character was hard and cold, but at least you knew where you stood with someone like that.

  • @lordhoot1: He knows where he stood??? Puh-leez. If that's what he came away w/ then good for him, but I wouldn't trust a physically, emotionally, & mentally abusive penguin even if my life my depended on it.

  • Meryl Streep should have won, everything she does is gold. This scene was Wow! The mother was crazy for rationalizing even the thought of her son being touched.

  • Did you not listen? It was rationalize it or have him dead. The boy had THREE strikes against him: he's black, he's gay, & he's living in 1964. To her, (as sick as it sounds), it was the lesser of 2 evils. In the one hand: turn a blind eye to the abuse & keep him alive or stop it & have him be gay bashed & murdered. You are living in a different time, a different age & a different world. The early 60's for some1 black AND gay... well, never mind. Also, there was 1 more suspicion...

  • I don't think it was fully addressed, but the reason why the priest got along so well w/ Donald wasn't that he was a pedophile, but that he was a gay priest who was celibate, who recognized that the kid was probably gay too. (& Maybe the other kid- the blonde boy-- was just homophobic & didn't want to be touched by any1 who is gay. Even tho it may be probable, it is also POSSIBLE that it was about something else. That is what doubt is all about.

  • @robynsegg did you audition for it? I'm going into rehearsals for the role this sunday

  • @Leeta: Not yet. Auditions won't be until around Christmas. Break a leg!

  • another great performance by Streep

  • best scene ever.

  • "Well, maybe some of them boys wanna get caught!"

  • Viola Davis' character broke my heart in this scene. As a mother myself I could completely feel her character's pain! What a fabulous performance!

  • @erikandgregsmom it's a horrible position to be in. does she let her kid get molested, or does she let her husband kill him? i have 2 teenage boys, i can't imagine having to decide.

  • Streep should have got the Oscar for this role.

  • a masterclass in acting, watching these two incredible actresses

  • so glad penelope won!

  • The New York Times asked famous actors to name the best acting performance of the last decade. My mind immediately raced to Viola Hughe's performance in Doubt. It's amazingly gratuitousness in its emotional vulnerability. In a short scene, Hughes is able to convey the incredibly difficult position her character is in and how she doesn't have the luxury of absolutes. Absolutely fantastic!!

  • @vseegobi Kinda sad that you think that she had the best performance but you cannot remember her name correctly. It's Viola Davis.

  • you're right, it totally undermines the thesis of my comment.

  • lol, yep.

  • i do feel that there was somthing wierd going on with the priest and the kid.... poor little kid

  • i wanna watch this movie so bad

  • bahhhhhh she's going to OWN broadway in Fences with Denzel Washington as Troy. TONY TONY TONY TONY

  • How could Viola not have gotten the Oscar the woman cried through her nose.

  • Oprah could have done this part, but she does not have the acting chops like Viola...

  • Man Viola's brillant! Get her some more roles! She going to be on Broadway in April with (Drumroll) Denzel Washington! Meryl Streep is amazing as usual!

  • Oprah winfrey was up for the role that Viola Davis is playing and I think Oprah could have done the part justice however saying that, Viola is amazing, and she deserved her oscar nomination.

  • No Oprah wanted the role so she took it on herself to talk to the director and the director said no and explained all the reasons he had for not casting Oprah and she understood. I saw an interview where Oprah skpes Meryl for her interview and Oprah tells meryl this.

  • Yeah. she should have won. Meryl Streep is incomparable.

  • Brilliant acting. Why don't we see more of Viola Davis?

  • The priest was gay. That's why he was so friendly with the gay kid. That's why he resigned.

  • That's what I think it was, also. I suspect their relationship was platonic.

Streep did a great job of playing, imho, a very cold, unlikeable character. I think she really cared more about being in charge and in control than she did the welfare of the students.

  • she should have won, not penelope

  • According to the playwright, he intentionally left the viewer hanging at the end so as to draw their own conclusions on whether or not the accusations are true.

  • To cause "doubt" hahahah....thats why i liked the ending lol

  • Wow.

  • They shot this scene by my house in the Bronx parkchester east side ;-)

  • wow! so you've seen meryl? i envy you.. ;)

  • She should have won.

  • Agreed.

  • the Nun thinks she knows something. however, she just thinks its possible... check-out the sermon from the Pastor on "gossip". was he trying to cover his ass? or was he just speaking the truth?

  • this is awesome, it shows how the world was really then for african americans, the rules were different for them, you can feel her emotions in the scene, viola davis, incredible, brought tears to my eyes

  • My school is doing this play. I'm auditioning for the role of Mrs. Muller is coming Tuesday. Watching this is helping me get an idea of how I should read my monolague. I've watched it several times but the first time I watched it...I was heartbroken and my breath was taken away. What an amazing performance, on both counts.

  • Meryl nails that accent. It's freaky.

the film is wonderful all around! Worth owning.

  • What a tour de force performance from Viola Davis.

  • im meeting viola davis.

shes my best friends aunt. !!!

  • I can't understand either, why no one of the characters get an academy award for acting. All four of them did a great job!

This is one of my favourite scenes in the movie. You can really feel all the emotions and see their point of view. This scene really thrills me and I have to watch it over and over again. Espacially 03:39 - 03:50. Awesome acting!!!

  • how can Viola Davis not get an Oscar for this? I see this scene, and whenever I watch it I just nod in disbelief of her losing out to Cruz, who was herself pretty good in Vicky Cristina Barcelona; but Davis was clearly the deserving one.

Oscars...argh. All four major characters from Hoffman to Streep to Adams to Davis were nothing short of magnificent and none got an award?!? sad.

  • Comment removed

  • Im still stumped how Penelope Cruz won over my Viola Davis! At least Viola has a Tony award!

  • 5 stars

  • Wonderful acting.

  • Davis should have won the oscar. She stole a scene from THE Meryl Streep.

  • I just said the exact thing to a friend the other day. stole it.

  • I saw it. Made it realistic, though... lol

  • this movie was amazing..

the main actor nun is amazing the other actor innocent nun amazing actor as well.

sorry ,do not know their names.

  • That's called acting and real life situation, not glamor and glitz.

  • Its interesting, when I first saw this i imedietly assumed that father did it because thats what your generally led to belive in this kind of story, but afterwards i realised that the sister did not have any concrete evidence, and perhaps her motives were more about her struggle for power and that she didnt like the preast rather than concern for the boy...interesting film.

  • @jatzcraker I suggest you read the play version. I did not see the movie and don't know how it ends, but the play will definitely assist you in coming to a clear understanding of what position the sister has in regard to the boy. You owe it to yourself to discover the truth.

  • Well, as a matter of fact, if you`re having doubts it means at least you`re paying attention to the things happening It`s a pitty that the boys mother doesn`t seem to

  • i just saw dis movie and i didnt get it da ending so who was write did he molest da boy or was he innocent can someone reply to me dis movie is confusing

  • they leave that decision to the audience so we don't acually know from watching the movie whether or not he was guilty

  • LOL...I was trying not to focus on that. :) Good detail, though. Cold, blustery weather and an emotional encounter tends to produce those bubbles (and real-looking tear or two).

  • the first time i saw this, i actually understood what they were talking about, and everyone i went with was all confused. this is a good movie, and after watching this, i think that this is the best scene in the film.

  • That's why she won the award for Best supporting Actress.

  • Nobody in Doubt won any acting Oscars. Penelope Cruz won supporting actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

  • Yes, of course you are correct. I realized my mistake after sending my comment. I meant to say "nominated". My mistake, probably because I felt she should have won :-) thanks for keeping me honest.

  • Haha, sorry. I agree though, I preferred this to Penelope Cruz' anyway. Cruz was good but this scene was just incredible.

  • I'm still disappointed that my Viola Davis didn't win the Oscar!

  • what time frame is this set?

  • Early 60's.

  • I'm auditioning for the role of Father Flynn at my college.... I'm excited.

  • Hope you like little black boys. Or you can do the college humor version.

  • I think it's extremely cool that this woman had roughly ten minutes of screen time yet managed to make such a profound impact on the film. Viola Davis, you rock!

  • We love you Viola Davis ! Please continue to act, we want to see you in more roles !

  • After this, I am really looking forward to Viola's future career.

I don't know but every time I watch this scene, I cry.

I think Penelope was good, but Viola is much more affecting.

  • Why do people keep trying to pit Viola against Meryl? IIRC, Meryl was up for Best Actress while Viola was up for Best Supporting Actress. Neither of them won, and both of them should have. They both did incredible jobs, so leave it at that.

  • did viola win anything for this role?
