What a great song...Alex Chilton..RIP..had such an amazing voice..what a talent..!!..I loved The Box Tops..and now, with YouTube..I can hear them and any other band I choose to hear..Been having a field Day for the past year..Posting great songs like this one for friends who may not have heard it before..Thanks for this Post..and the Video..Good stuff.I was lucky enough to 'live' the 60's,70's.& 80's..such great times...:)
Back in the 60's flesh colored paint for model kits was labeled cream.Being 8 years old I thought this was a soul song about white women sung by a black singer, sweet CREAM ladies, get it.
Wow, everytime I tried to tell my daughter she and n0one else believed me until , the internet!! My mom was the same way, I even bought the 45. Gee how innocent we were back then . I couldnt figure out why my mom called it "dirty"?!
I remember my sister and I doing the dishes and singing along to this song on the radio. My mother told us to 'turn that filthy song off' ' I couldn't understand why...I thought the song was about pastries.
You are correct. This song is about prostitution, and when the radio stations figured it out, they stopped playing it. This song was well ahead of it's time. When the Boxtops released "The Letter"" in 1967, the lead singer, Alex Chilton was 16 years old. Hard to believe.
Tricky lyrics, they might keep a simple fella out of jail. One can interpret it a pro-women's movement song. Now the song could be about strippers.Satisfy the ego of the mail.Anyway, the song sounds cool anyway.
kklinger1 - Thanks for the info. I found this on an old K-Tel album in the basement, and I really couldn't figure it out. And I remember how shocked I was when I learned Alex's age circa "The Letter". I think Stevie Winwood was about the same age when he hit it big, too.

"Think of what you're giving to the lost and lonely people of the night"
"Puritans ignore them"
"Let them satisfy the ego of the male"
"Let them fabricate success to those who fail"
Definitely about prostitutes.

I remember when this song came out on the radio some stations would not play it because of it's lyrics.
