  • What a great song...Alex Chilton..RIP..had such an amazing voice..what a talent..!!..I loved The Box Tops..and now, with YouTube..I can hear them and any other band I choose to hear..Been having a field Day for the past year..Posting great songs like this one for friends who may not have heard it before..Thanks for this Post..and the Video..Good stuff.I was lucky enough to 'live' the 60's,70's.& 80's..such great times...:)

  • Was in Nam first time i heard this. hearing it now brings a lot of good and bad memories

  • a lost classic tune.not many oldies stations play this one these days.

  • Back in the 60's flesh colored paint for model kits was labeled cream.Being 8 years old I thought this was a soul song about white women sung by a black singer, sweet CREAM ladies, get it.

  • Alex Chilton was a SUPER talent.so sad he is no longer with us.

  • I haven't thought of this song in years. Thanks for posting it.

  • Wow, everytime I tried to tell my daughter she and n0one else believed me until , the internet!! My mom was the same way, I even bought the 45. Gee how innocent we were back then . I couldnt figure out why my mom called it "dirty"?!

  • "Think of what you're giving to the lost and lonely people of the night"

    "Puritans ignore them"

"Let them satisfy the ego of the male"

"Let them fabricate success to those who fail"

    Definitely about prostitutes.

  • It was about prostitutes.

  • what exactly was this song about?

  • @Doobie1975

    It's about prostitution.

  • @psychkoala you seriously gotta be kiddine me?

  • @Doobie1975

    No, it's true.

  • great song, haven't heard this forever, this song brings me back alot of great memories

  • a great anthum

  • it was released in Canada on Bell and without the forward march in the title. just a small footnote in rock history.

  • Nice pair of SG's there.....

  • The ladies at 1:29 are the best!

  • I remember my sister and I doing the dishes and singing along to this song on the radio. My mother told us to 'turn that filthy song off' ' I couldn't understand why...I thought the song was about pastries.

  • Pretty hip parents.I thought it was about 1890's women.

  • Like the old family photos, great looking GS & Marshall amp!

  • Great song

  • I remember when this song came out on the radio some stations would not play it because of it's lyrics.

  • You are correct. This song is about prostitution, and when the radio stations figured it out, they stopped playing it. This song was well ahead of it's time. When the Boxtops released "The Letter"" in 1967, the lead singer, Alex Chilton was 16 years old. Hard to believe.

  • Tricky lyrics, they might keep a simple fella out of jail. One can interpret it a pro-women's movement song. Now the song could be about strippers.Satisfy the ego of the mail.Anyway, the song sounds cool anyway.

  • @74sodapop male* and you say "anyway" too much

  • kklinger1 - Thanks for the info. I found this on an old K-Tel album in the basement, and I really couldn't figure it out. And I remember how shocked I was when I learned Alex's age circa "The Letter". I think Stevie Winwood was about the same age when he hit it big, too.

  • You are correct. Stevie Winwood was still a teenager (19) when" I'm a Man" was released in the spring of 1967.

  • Class act The Box Tops - very good song.

  • Once again 74soapop, you've done a great job! I haven't heard this for years and I have missed it dearly. THANKS!

  • Love the song - great group - and very nice video display.

Thanks for the great memories. I'm smiling from ear to ear. You ROCK!!
