This has to be the lamest idea for a comic ever. I could give a shit about the fucking Human Flame. Also, Final Crisis was a clusterfuck, so as much as I want DC to give us all a reason why they published that, and make it matter, this is not an "aftermath" for an event. It's just a gimmick for a stupid comic.
Ya, I was using the term "newer" because the person I was talking to hadn't watched wrestling since the Rock was around. I know Jericho and Edge have been around for a very long time but they are now at the top of the WWE. When the Rock and Austin were around they were mostly midcarders. Though Jericho did beat the Rock and Austin in the same night to become the first undisputed champion.
Well, to be fair the first time he only got half his face burned off and then at the end of the book he gets the other side burned off. So twice...kinda.
I really don't think it's fair to dismiss a book or get down on it because the main character was a detestable piece of shit. Some stories are just about detestable pieces of shit. I also have no doubt about the character getting his come-uppance - he's clearly being characterized as a scumbag with no regard for anyone else, but also as a pathetic moron.I'm betting the whole point of making us loathe him so much here is so that we feel good about whatever bad shit that happens to him later.
Maybe I'm descentized or like stories about reprehensible characters (isn't American Psycho one of Jose's favourite books?).
I mean, I can see why you feel the way you do and you're certainly welcome to feel that way, but you also said pretty much nothing about the quality of the writing or art or anything other than that some of it made you laugh. Can't you divorce assesment of quality from gut reactions about content?
Though Partick Bateman is a completely reprehensible character he is also very psychologically interesting at the same time. At least to me.
There is nothing interesting about the Human Flame to me at all and I just didn't really feel like getting into specifics as to all the things I didn't like about the book. It happens sometimes. The book was so meh. Plus this book felt just like the new Hawkeye series and that shit is getting old fast.
Really, what I disliked most about it (and I liked it for the most part - it was fun, but forgettable) is that it really doesn't seem necesary. At all. Why are they even following up on this character? Through the few lines he had in Final Crisis he was characterized as a pathetic has-been loser who wanted desperately to play with the big-boy villains but was too stupid to know what he was getting into. I thought that was great - but who *cares* what happened to him after that?
Ya, I said this to another commenter: I don't care about this character. And you are completely right about it not being necessary at all. I think that might be another reason why I am "against" this book. It really just shouldn't exist.
That being said, I am really looking forward to the Final Crisis Aftermath: Dance mini. Those are characters(new Forever People) who seem interesting to me and you couple that with the fact the CrissCross is drawing the book it equals "easy buy" for me.
You know what would be an AWESOME way to stretch this out for six issues, since it's completely unecessary anyway?
His tanks blowing up on the last page triggers some kind of time loop because of some after effect of the Anti-Life Equation or something. Then the whole six issue run would be that first issue repeated six times. The exact same things happening, the exact same art, just different dialogue as he slowly realizes what's happening and struggles to fight his way out of the time loop.
Like that episode of Star Trek: TNG where they were stuck in a time loop and before every commercial break the Enterprise would blow up? I'd be down for that.
DiDio - if you're reading this, it should be clear from what Jose has just said that people want to see more time loops in comics. I can have scripts for all six issues of "Final Crisis Aftermath: What The Fuck I'm Caught In A Crazy Time Loop Whoaaaaaashit" to you by tomorrow. Call me.
I'm impressed that it actually elicits a conflict within you two. You laugh, but you detest it at the same time. It's like an offensive comedian. The only difference (which is major) is that comedians normally do it to have you think.
In no way is it trying to teach a lesson. Maybe that's why you find it detestable. Maybe that will change in later issues, but I think that's your beef. I was numb and neutral to it. But I've seen most people loving or hating it.
I think you're right agmaster. Just like the Dark Reign Hawkeye series. there is nothing redeemable to the character and that does bother me a bit. If I don't give a shit about a character why do I want to read about him. Also, I certainly don't hate him enough to want to see awful things happen to him so if that is what DC is going to give readers in the series what's the point? Don't care enough to hate him.
I haven't really watched wrestling since the days of the Rock and Steve Austin though, so maybe if it's gone really downhill since then this might be as fun as wrestling.
Maybe for some. Though the Rock and Stone Cold are irreplaceable I think there are some new guys out there making it really enjoyable like Chris Jericho and Edge.
As usual, I agree with Jose but whenever I go to comic stores these days I seldom see any customer under 18. I wonder if because customers are mostly adults these days do comic publishers not really care much about the Mature labels, especially unlike TV, the bad content is hard to find as comic stores are few in comaprison with TV where a kid can always stumble across bad content by accident and thus the FCC has to be vigilant with TV. What do you posters think?
it seems dc puts mature readers labels on their comics less than any other publisher and i'm wondering if this is because they still submit work to the comics code authority. maybe ALL of their non-comics code work is for mature readers and the stuff that has the comics code stamp on it is all ages. but if that's the case then they should still have some sort of label on their comics saying this shit aint for kids. and i mean that literally, it should say "this shit aint for kids" on the cover.
The only run series i'm going to read are dance and ink... I'm not a DC reader except for GL & GLC, but i'm going go read those towo series are because Dance is about the Japanese team and I love Japan and i'm going to be reading Ink because I like Tattoo man character which I read about him in the 2-3 issues in GL.
I'm so tired of doing our NA rants, BlackPhoenix, since they always harp on the same things. When we come up with a new angle, like our 'review' of NA #51, then we'll go back to them. Actually, I said it was "The funniest thing I read all week". But whatever, close enough.

PS...The best line of the book (or any book) was "Now to die, Nipple Flame!".
BENWONDER 2 years ago
The best line of any book is "Eat glass, lawman!" from All-star Batman & Robin.
Nkerklaan 2 years ago
If Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force was a super-villain, he'd be the Human Flame. What a scumbag! I thought this book was hilarious.

I wouldn't really call Edge and Jericho new, jsut saying.
