Make it the part of a Passivhaus smartgrid system with solar panels and then I will buy it, until that happens its just an electric accessory with barely any fuctionality.
Yes. Its nothing. Read up what a Passivhaus is and how does it work. This is just a shiny useless gadget aimed at mac users who like shiny useless gadgets.

now if you can link this to you iPhone 4s and tell siri : "i'm on my way home" and she can send a message to Nest to begin to warm things up for when you get home ( siri can even use gps to determine what time you will get home if your driving)
Does this work with ground source heat pumps? I was told by my installer that I should not use a programable thermostat with my heat pump because it is more efficient to just keep the temperature constant.
I love this and appreciate any energy saving, but having a hvac system running continously? no wonder the worlds in the enviro dog house. Talk about extreme power usage. learn to live to the enviroment, not change it to YOUR needs. i.e more clothes, a simple fan,,
What if the thermostat is in a part of the house that people don't frequent? Or if you work in an office for hours at a time? Will the auto-away feature keep thinking there's nobody home and activate? The only way my thermostat would see anybody is if they were actually leaving or entering the house.
Can auto-away can be turned off if need be?
Will the device function if the servers at NEST shut down/offline permanently?
@digikill I'd bet the auto-away menu option described at 3:00 lets you turn that feature off. I wonder of the bundled installation option includes moving the thermostat if needed.; If so, it's worth it. The setup wizard shown in another video states wifi setup can be skipped, so I highly doubt it would require connectivity to function at a basic level.
@digikill Auto-Away can be turned off and, if it's in a place that doesn't get any traffic, it may not turn on at all. More info about it can be found at nest.com.
And yes, Nest will work even if our servers go down. Nest uses Wi-Fi to connect to the Nest Account so it can auto-update and you can control it remotely, but all the core features don't need Wi-Fi to work.
Actually this is not effective at all. It's just a good looking device. Without a capability to detect peak hours in the grid, for electricity based heating or any other electricity+oil combinations, it is useless. You need to detect peak hours so you can begin heating or cooling when electricity is cheaper. If this is not possible this thermostat has no more efficiency than digital thermostats from honeywell. Don't kid yourself people. Only EPS insulation and Vacum windows make real savings.
@UltraSkid Are you watching every one of these videos and posting the same thing? About the grid thing, I think that's why they say teach it good habits. If you set it appropriately during peak grid hours it will keep those settings. I don't think it is better than a thermostat that you can program. I just think they make it easier to use and you don't have to think about programming. Have you ever owned a programmable thermostat? They are a pain I think. Most people probably give up on them.
@annchovie That's true, but for the purpose of this video, we're assuming it's cold outside. We'll provide a new set of energy-saving tips when the weather warms up again.
@Nest I live in Florida and our "winter" is pretty short. Thanksgiving week was quite warm while this week is pretty nippy. So both tutorials would be useful for us. I just found out my thermostat is in fact low voltage so I'll be getting a Nest!!

The ability to bump the heat from the upstairs bed stand via iPhone is a very compelling feature.

Also allow the cloud application to pull local peak usage data to seriously improve on electrical cost saving for the users specific market location.

Outside temp sensor would make this device even mor predictively smarter! We need an outdoor wireless temp sensor for the Nest!

why does it say to turn the temp down when you sleep or when you leave the house? doesn't that depend on the time of year and where you live?
