  • Map is for girlie men yes ? :)

  • @RMJ1984 ..or for men who's memories have deteriorated. ;P

  • wolfenstein (the fps that came out in 2009) is also very good and underrated it is a very deserving of the wolfenstein title

  • Cool. I played this version to death back when I first got my Goldstar 3DO. Good to hear your thoughts.

  • Looks like a really great version. The map is a feature I would love since I always get lost in this sort of game.

Excellent commentary too. Thanks for the video.

  • Check out my HD Jaguar video of Wolfenstein 3D ( 6JjEdFhBXIY ) The only thing better on the 3D0 version was it had a better controller then the Jag.

  • I only played the 3do version on a 3do demo disc, great port though, i should have bought the full game.

  • @squirm13 That must have been on the Interplay demo disc, right? I'd like to hunt that down, as I believe there are a couple of demos or previews of some games that never saw the light of day.

  • @austinmackert It was, cyberia was on there, and i think casper and some videos etc.

  • you should of displayed the audio of the game at one point so your viewers can hear it

  • @mangia52779 Thanks for the idea, I might start doing that in future G&T videos. :)

  • 3DO games in the UK sell for pretty cheap prices on ebay.co.uk. Its a shame you US collectors are getting ripped off. :(

  • @ollyh82 I will admit, I am a bit envious now, haha! It's tough (and expensive) to rack up a solid 3DO collection in the US these days.

  • @austinmackert i had a Goldstar 3DO back in 96 and the games were cheap then through mail order in the UK. I remember Space Hulk not working with the Goldstar model which pissed me off. A few laters after i sold off my Goldstar to get a Saturn i picked up a Panasonic FZ-1 pretty cheap and a few titles, the problem with the PAL models they have a black border around the image probably something to do with the 50hz setting for the UK TV's.

  • @ollyh82 The problem with the the black border on most UK systems and computers at the time is they were designed in the USA for a TV resolution of 640 x 480, when the UK TV standard was 768 x 576

  • You can sense when you are hit by the sound BJ makes, no damage flash needed ;-). This was also in the Mac version. The original PC version had sound limitations that the Mac and 3DO versions did not have - only a single digitized sound could be played at a time. This is why damage flash and adlib sounds were used.

  • @Wolf3dman That sounds like an appropriate reason for the time. On the other hand though, the visual notification when you get hit became a staple in the genre as it continued on, such as in DOOM, Quake, Unreal, Painkiller, etc., etc.

  • @austinmackert HAHA well said man! Wish we would've seen Hexxen on the Jag & 3DO, or Heretic on any system! :P (although id software technically just "oversaw" & published those). Wolf, Doom, & Quake... can't say enough good things about id!

  • Wow! This does look like an excellent port! On top of that, the music sounds phenomenal!!!

I’m definitely going to have to seek this out. Thanks for the tips on how to acquire it as well. I too am annoyed by sellers on eBay. It’s such a shame.

Great video as always Mr. Mackert.

  • @austinmackert thanks for clearing that up! couldn't remember! maybe I'm just thinking the Mac version (so really Mac, Jag, 3DO) has more weapons than the original DOS version. Get all 4 mixed up :P (never played SNES port). Anyway, great game, great port. As much as I played the DOS version, I dig all the improvements!

  • @austinmackert Thanks 4 info! dude I heard the guys from id software wanted to test out the Jag's power before porting Doom so they toyed with Wolf3D and completed the port over a weekend. Man, sweet if that's true. Mac, 3DO, & Jag versions have GREAT visuals! Big improvement from the DOS version I played back in the day:]

  • @m15granger I haven't heard that one myself, but with Carmack's skill, I wouldn't doubt it, haha!

  • loved the music in the 3DO one.. but still believe the Jag had the nicest port of them all.

  • @valgalder I knew you would say that! ;D

I think the Jaguar version is a great port as well, and it has some perks over this version. One of the things that bugs me more today than it did back in the day though is how the enemies seem to "wig-out" when you have it on the hardest difficulty mode. One thing that's kind of cool that I didn't really notice until this year though, is that (at least on the hardest mode since that's all I play), the enemy placement is randomized! That's a cool touch.

  • Great video! I love the extra details in this game, like the 2 hands on your gun when you fire! Is this game insanely expensive for the 3DO? Because I definitely want to pick it up.

  • @dave4shmups From what I can tell, eBayers seem to list this game between $20 and $50. Whether it's worth it is up to you, but I feel you can probably get a better deal for a complete copy if you wait it out for a straight-up auction. Or you could always go with the "try before you by" method. ;D

  • I love wolfinstien, but I never know it was on the 3do! Im goin to have to get a copy of this

  • @gabbogabbo Do iiiittt!! It's a great port. :)

  • I hope you no the original first person shooter was the Maze Wars, and made 1974.

  • @oliverswanli i hope you know that he mentioned the other fps's in the first 30 seconds of the video

  • Also, I completely agree Id Software kept 1uping the genre with Wolf, Doom, Hexxen, & Quake. Man! Back when FPS has style! All great games, play them often on multiple platforms :] keep more legit videos like this coming man!

  • The 3DO & Jag versions were "sourced" from the Mac version with cleaned up versions from the DOS version :] both are great looking. The Jag version has no score and lives. They made it more like doom with %health. The Jag version also has full screen, no blocky status bar so you can see more. The 3DO sound is AWESOME! I agree man. The dog bark is LEGIT, The 3DO version has more levels also. If remember correctly, the 3DO version is lacking the rocket launcher or flame thrower? Great video man.

  • @m15granger I can't pinpoint an exact release date for the Mac version (Wikipedia states '94, but I found a box for the CD Mac release that states '95), but I do know that id software did the Jaguar version in-house, which released in 1994. Either the Mac version came out slightly earlier and id thought the rockets and flame thrower were a good idea, or they implemented it first (in the Jaguar version) and then Interplay/Logic Ware opted to keep those additions for the Mac and 3DO versions.

  • @m15granger And, nope! The 3DO version does include the rocket launcher and flame thrower (you can see the flame thrower in action at the 11:00 mark. :)

  • Best Wolf3D port imo....I wish the X360 version was based off the 3DO port at least with badass music!

  • @X3CuT1oNR I second that. Best version of Wolf 3D, wish we could get a mod/source port with the 3d0 content.

  • @X3CuT1oNR I am really glad we got a perfect PC port via the 360, but I agree that it would be great if there was a modern port of the 3DO game (or even better, the Mac game with the 3DO soundtrack) would be excellent!
