@Ovrkilisundrrtd ye the camaro was the other option to but the challenger is over priced, but i think the problem with the tranny is the transmission oil it is to high in viscosity and isnt made for this transmission so it causes the tranny fluid to burn out in a VERY SHORT PERIOD. once the fluid is crap any problem will happen with your tranny, also if there was a problem with the clutch when adding over 60hp? when spring comes ima see which dealership gives the better overall deal :P
Officially, to ford, chevy and dodge, the transmissions work as designed according to them. The fault lies on them supporting tremec's flawed design and not addressing it. Sad to see so many nice cars go to waste, so to say.
Jmatero: i wouldn't call the tremec 6060 bulletproof in the camaro. We are having our issues with it as well, v6 & v8. 1-2 gear grind is evident and people have said that putting in carbon fiber synchros seems to help. I think the design of these transmissions was flawed from the start but nobody wants to fess up.
I'm really interested in purchasing a V6 manual and was researching it when I came across this video. Does this issue affect the V6 models as well, or is it limited to the V8s? Also, does this issue have anything to do with Ford's 'skip shift?' I think it requires the driver to shift directly from 1st to 4th under certain conditions. (pardon my ignorance as I'm a complete novice when it comes to manual)
@bchreng Has nothing to do with the skip-shift feature and it's happening in both 2011 and 2012 V6, GT(V8) and Boss 302 Mustangs. Check out the brokenstangs website for details.
I liked when the shifter started migrating north while in second. good one, ford. Even better that the techs "could not duplicate" your problem. Yes. it magically fixed itself. riiight..
What a piss off i am 17 geting a 2011 mustang this spring for a grad present and they use cheap low quality chinese shit as a main part of the engine? why couldnt it just be a bolt or something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! someone message me back with what they think i should do get a mustang or camaro (im a ford person) or wtf?????????
@dustyonlive Imaging having one already and it not working. If you REALLY want a 2011+ Mustang, get the automatic or go with a Camaro or Challenger... both have the bulletproof Tremec TR6060 transmission (just like the Corvette)
True but the new cameros are having a lot of transmission troubles too. have you kept in touch with ford on the issue? Ford is still looking into the problem lol....... they are just a bit slow. May I ask what the manufacture date on your car is? You may be able to trade your car in for a brand new one. Have you noticed any improvement with the shifts during a longer drive?
@Ovrkilisundrrtd I don't know what you'd call "a lot of problems" but I haven't read ANYTHING to the extent of THIS mess. Every day at AllFordMustangs there's another post from an owner who lost their MT82, had it replaced, and lost it again. Manufacture date is 8/2010 (Job-1). There is NO WAY this car can be traded in with 3 working forward gears. It's not even safe to drive. Ford refuses to fix it claiming "works like others on the lot". I had to hire an attorney to sue them just to ditch it!
@Ovrkilisundrrtd There is absolutely no change in shift characteristics over a long drive. 2 and 3 are gone completely... no synchromesh... can't even rev-match to engage them. Now 4th is almost in that condition.
@Ovrkilisundrrtd I'll be honest, after the way I and everyone else is being treated over this mess, I will NEVER buy a Ford product again. It's crystal clear why Consumer Reports, JD Power, and now TrueDelta all show their quality has plummeted. I've never had to change a clutch or transmission in my LIFE... at least dozen other cars... and mine is on the 2nd tranny and 3rd clutch assembly in 5000 miles.. because of an easy 5 mile commute to work????? All highway????
Did you start noticing the issues right around 1000 miles? Fords decision to go with the new transmission wasnt a great idea. There is a variety of problems with the design starting with the fluid itself. Type in 'ford tsb mustang' on google. Top link is a tsb issued by ford for the fluid. You may have already tried this but it may help. The internal trans design is tight and the fluid is too thick. Metal flake from early wear is possibly locking things up
@Ovrkilisundrrtd Noticed it at around 1000 miles. They tried changing the clutch and flywheel first, then the transmission. The new transmission had the TSB spec fluid from day one and after another 1000 miles, this. There are Land Rover Defender and Ford Transit Van owners overseas who have complained about this transmission since 2004. Camaro, Challenger, Cadillac CTS-v, Corvette, and GT500 all use the Tremec TR6060. Ford went cheap-o with this Chinese-built train wreck. Check out NHTSA.gov.
@Ovrkilisundrrtd Not a single mod on my car. First transmission started grinding and locking out gears and was changed (along with the clutch and flywheel assemblies for the second time) at 3000 miles. Within 500 miles, the whining started and then what you see above. I am 2 blocks from the highway, then 5 miles to work, then one right turn off the exit to my job... no abuse.
Wow... I would be LIVID! If I were in your situation I would go in there demanding for a Tremec to be put in on their expense. From my experience with dealers, if you demand something, and do not let it go, they will eventually rule in your favor. Hopefully Ford does the right thing. This is rediculous.
@GarageCrazy The NHTSA just received all the requested documents from Ford and will decide shortly whether to proceed with an engineering investigation... which could lead to a recall. Meanwhile, Ford is taking their time... delaying my lemon law case.
@jmatero Sorry to hear that man, I'm only 17 I haven't seen what can go on out in this world yet but I feel for you. If I had a brand new mustang and it broke I'd want it fixed now! They better put a brand new transmission and shift in for ya next time. I'd walk into the Ford Dealership and just tell everyone yeah man this is the 3rd time I've been in here for a transmission, this is bullshit. Their talking their good ole time dealing with this shit and I guarantee it's gonna break again.
@johnrambo007 also if it was the skip-shift feature it wouldnt grind the gears it would just have a guard to prevent you from going into the gear or something like that i know for a fact it wouldnt grind the gears that just fucks up the gears
what pisses me off is the techs saying THEY CANT PRODUCE THE PROBLEM! clearly they just look at the car and call it a day. how long did it take to produce the problem?? 4 seconds??? i own one and am just sick and tired of trying to get this car fixed!!! is something wrong here? guess not
The dumbest thing I ever shifted in my life honestly. It doesn't go into gear right away. Its got like a two setting You put it in gear so it holds and then push it to get going. Gay.
That really sucks... I almost bought the manual 5.0 but got the auto instead. No problems here. Unless you consider chirpping 2nd and 3rd a problem :)
Jesus and to think I was going to trade my terminator for a new 5.0 screw that I will keep the termi. Funny how a a car that went to production in 16 months is better than a car that has all the time into making it right.
Only the V8 has the skip-shift feature. V6 Mustang owners as well as Land Rover Defender and Ford Transit Panel Vans don't have skip shift and they have the same issue.
Ford blows. I had GT and it was nothing but trouble; electrical, terrible clutches, and leaked. Now they are also recalling their F150/F250 truck line.
Actually you should check out the lemon law in your state. You might be entitled to a new car cause you have a lemon. In NJ the lemon law states..."A new motor vehicle is presumed to be a lemon if it has one or more defects that continue to exist after three attempts at repairs, OR after the vehicle has been out of service for a total of 20 cumulative calendar days."
Ford shoukd really have gone to Steeda, Roush, Or maybe Hurst for a tranny. But Ford decided to go with money, not quality. Fix Or Repair Daily. Living up to its name.
As far as made in China i don't know about that i have some china made products and their the best ive ever owned in their class and think about rednecks where i live can't even install a light switch correctly and you want these tards building your car?
@theantiredneck Ford did decide to use a Chinese company to make this new transmission. This company is known for its terrible quality and yet Ford decided to use them anyway. Even the V6 Mustangs are having transmission problems. Unacceptable!!!
@theantiredneck: I live in San Jose California... it's not a cold weather issue. And this car has the DCT fluid in the second transmission and THIS happened.
It's very disheartening to see this, and a few cases of the #8 piston failing on the new 5.0 as well. Is this a "lemon" yet? at almost $40k and your loss of use and times at the dealer it would seem to me it is...I had problems with my warranty on my '04 Cobra as well, seems all they wanted to hear was that I had modified it...thankfully I didn't, and with a little bit of pressure and the Service Mgr going for a ride w/me I was able to get the 2 TSB's fixed. Ford needs to step up. Seriously.
after watching this im so glad i went with an 08 i had the exact same problem happen to me with an 05 ls2 gto 6 speed i purchased before i got my 08 gt, had it for less than an hour in my own posession and car wouldnt even shift into a gear slave cylinder supposidly was the issue, then the dealership claimed to "fix" it drove less than a mile and it wouldnt shift into 4th then it wouldnt shift into any gear...seems to be an issue with alot of muscle cars
hey man, too bad for you it's a brand new car i just wanna ask you i'm planning to buy a mustang gt soon so would you recommend me to go for a 2010 or to try a 2011 anyway? thanks
I would advise you to go to allfordmustangs and view the thread on transmission issues. It has over 4000 posts from owners of 2011's and 2012's with issues. Also, check out the NHTSA website where almost 50 owners of 2011 and 2012's posted their transmission issues pose a safety risk. Then, make an informed decision on what you would do if this happens to your car and Ford refused to honor their warranty.
@fahque69691 I believe the autos use a completely separate transmission which is made in the US. I've heard no complaints about it and actually know someone with it who has had no problems for over a year.
@slspg I have a 2011 Mustang GT Premium 6-spd manual, completely stock with ~5000 miles and it F'n rocks. Every morning when I drive it I either skip from 1st to 3rd or start in 2nd gear for the first 5 minutes. Once the car is warmed up I drive it like I stole it and the car has never given me any problems. I wouldn't trade my GT for anything and I've owned some pretty nice cars. 135i before this, STI before that, Mini Cooper S before that, Mazdaspeed 6 before that, etc etc. LOVE IT
Many like me have been forced to hire attorneys as Ford has yet to address this after a year of complaints by owners. A search of AutoTraded shows almost 400 used 2011 manual transmission mustangs on the market, while only 68 Camaros and 8 Challengers. Follow the transmission thread at allfordmustangs.
Any udpdates on this? I've also read your post on all ford mustangs but couldnt find any recent udpates. Now I'm just worried mine will fail. My sticker says 12/10.
Sorry to hear and see your problems, brother. Mine is no where as bad as that but the first shift I made out of the dealer lot was a 1-2 shift and it grinded. Very disheartening. I'm not going to bring my car to the dealer for any work until and unless ford comes out with a correct fix for this problem or the transmission fails.
@909Monopoly: Why should new owners buy aftermarket transmissions for new cars because Ford won't fix them??? There are already 43 reports to the NHTSA of near accidents because 2011/2012 owners are unable to engage gears.
This is typical Ford quality people. Don't be suckered into believing current Ford's are any better than the garbage that we say in the 90's and 2000's. Same crap...different moron running the ship.
The only permanent fix I'd say would be to demand that the MT82 be replaced with the Tremec transmission as the MT82 is obviously appears to be defective by design.
I would sue over this.
Ford needs to address this by threatening to drop Getrag as a sub contractor for making their transmissions in China and if they refuse to replace them with units made elsewhere drop them and make the company to pay for refitting all 2011 MT82 Mustangs with Tremecs.
You can probably make them buy your car back. If you're in Cali, a car in the shop more then 30 days in the first 18 months or 18k miles is a lemon. Google California Lemon Law, it will be the first thing that pops up.
1. Cars built before May 2010 have defective pedal assemblies
2. Cars built before Nov 2010 have defective pressure plate bolts
3. All 2011 and 2012 with stiff shifting under 35 degrees can use different fluid
It's been to 2 dealers, 2 Ford engineers have confirmed the issues and tried multiple repairs, and Ford Customer Care stated it has become systemic with these cars... with Mustangs all over the SF Bay area showing up at dealers over this.
@jmatero I bought mine back in November and the date on the white sticker says 6/10 I'm guessing I'm one of the lucky ones because as of today I have 6,567 miles and have been dumping the clutch and hotroding and haven"t had one problem I have already gone through two sets of rear tires!!! Should I take it in to get it looked at? Or was it just a small group of cars that were made at a certain plant?
If you aren't having problems with your Mustang, by all means enjoy it!!!! The problem seems to be very random... some owners have no issues, others minor, still others major. There are owners all over with 2011 and 2012 experiencing these issues so it is not limited to a build date range. Enjoy your car!!!!
@daddyd666 This is actually a problem with the car, not driver. Friend of mine showed me with the clutch fulling 100% mashed down to the floor it would grind 2nd gear every time and 1/2 the time not even go into it. You sir are the joke.
I'm a Chevy man but respect all cars and have to say I am very disappointed by Ford.. I feel for you.. Hope all ends well..maybe a full year without paying for insurance would be nice.. This is not acceptable..
How did this happen? That is revolting to see that Ford isn't helping you like a customer. It's like you bought it, it's your problem O.o They could at least give you a new mustang -.-
i got a 92 GT and same prob but it was because the whole tranny was shot now im payin 2600 to get it fixed

There are already 43 reports to the NHTSA of near accidents because 2011/2012 owners are unable to engage gears.
jmatero 8 months ago
@jmatero ive heard that these trannys can only handle a couple of bolt on upgrades before they start to fail
909Monopoly 8 months ago
@909Monopoly : The real problem is that they're failing in stock cars.
jmatero 8 months ago
@jmatero yup. hope u get that problem settled

Thanks for posting. Was going to buy a new 2012 model, and this has made me think twice. I will NOT be buying a Mustang now.

Google California Lemon Law, it will be the first thing that pops up.

dont buy american cars

@valflyinf Nope. Ford uses the Ford-Getrag MT82 6-speed built in China for the V6, GT, and BOSS 302. The GT500 still uses the Tremec

There are 3 TSB's for Mustang shifting issues:

@1970351cmustang : Driver's Door jam white sticker shows month/day on the top
jmatero 8 months ago
@jmatero I bought mine back in November and the date on the white sticker says 6/10 I'm guessing I'm one of the lucky ones because as of today I have 6,567 miles and have been dumping the clutch and hotroding and haven"t had one problem I have already gone through two sets of rear tires!!! Should I take it in to get it looked at? Or was it just a small group of cars that were made at a certain plant?
1970351cmustang 8 months ago
@1970351cmustang

That's what happens when a company decides to built crap in China.
