I love this show, I do. But I always thought that the dynamic was weird with Ren being in 8th grade. I could see Louis being a 7th grader, and I know the show wouldn't work if they weren't at the same school (and of course Donnie looks like a grown ass man), but it's always been weird for me that this is middle school

I just realized that Louis and Ren's original last name was Spivey. You can see Larry mouth it at both 8:38 and 8:56, though, it's clearly dubbed over with Stevens. Also, if you look closely at the beginning of the TelePrompTer shot at 8:40, you can see "Ren Spivey" written at the top.

Since the older part of this episode never aired on its own as a pilot, the producers must have decided to combine it with newer footage and cover up any changes they'd made to the show, like the new last name.

The tone of your posts registers as rather sarcastic. Why is that? In my first post, I noted three distinct time code positions in this clip that verify the Stevens' original last name: "Spivey". Two of these instances consist of Larry Beale mouthing this name, while the third shows it in written form at the top of the TelePrompTer. The evidence speaks for itself. But I guess if you refuse to believe what I'm saying is true, defending my claim further would only prove to be a wasted effort.
