It is definitely easy to get wrapped up in a phone call, especially in today's day and age of cell phones. This does not excuse someone from being irresponsible and neglecting their child; however, I can understand how a parent, especially one with a million different things going on, can become distracted.
This mother made a horrible mistake, but she has to live with that for the rest of her life. At least her baby survived! She was very lucky. I don't think she deserves all of the hateful comments everyone has been making. The mom made a bad decision, yes, but she paid the consequences and has enough sorrow to last her for a very long time. While I agree that one should never, ever leave an infant unattended even for an important phone call, she did make a mistake and, as others have said probably still has to live with the memories of what happened and could have happened. Hindsight is always 20'20 as they say. She could have gotten the older boy to watch the baby before letting him go out to play. And I don't doubt she wishes she'd done that or something else.
