  • how about something useful like a processor or GPU?

  • Its not this difficult now. There are 2.5inch 1tb hard drives now.

  • Can I get a link to the hard drive please

  • when I installed new 1TB hdd into my ps3 it says 827 out of 931 free. Where are those 100gb go, I don't even have anything on the hdd yet.

  • @ExKon3 it get displaced into megabytes, i remember freaking out back in 2005 when i put a $100 512MB in my PSP and it said some shit like 440 MB free. i called tech support and they explained it to me. they are there but they get diplaced and they round to the nearest GB.

  • @ChiGuy16 I get that it gets displaced into megabytes, only a total noob wouldn't understand that. Anyway that's not what I'm asking, I'm asking where does the 100GB go if there's nothing on ps3.

  • @ExKon i was only trying to help wiith what i know, calm down with the noob shit only retarded euro jagoffs and 12 year olds say "noob".

  • @ChiGuy16 im not euro and im 21 lol it's ok though

  • Ok I have a 1 tb 2.5 inch 9.5 mm hdd in my ps3 (samsung spinpoint mh) has anyone tried a 2 tb 3.5 connected with a sata extension, it's because i only use 2.5 hard drives, so if it dsnt work, it'll be a waste of money.

  • @erickthetechie the ps3 may not recognise a 2tb hard drive. I thing some models wont support a internal hd with that size.

  • i buyed a my second PS3 with 60GB it has been used like all we know 60GB PS3's CAN play PS2 games so i upgraded it with 1T then i made a backup from my other ps3 and paste it on my 1T PS3 ten i bougth a cool skin and now i have the best PS3 ever made :D btw @MUSCLEMASSHAMMERFEST 500gb is enough you cant get 1T full with 2T your insane xD
  • Hi

its been a while since i did this but i remember getting this message. I think i had an issue with it not being plugged in properly. Maybe its the cable. The 500 gig should plug straight into slot. Try that. Otherwise try the ps forum thats where i got all my help. Good luck. Oh by the way my drive is still going fine never had any issues what so ever (once i got it working that is)

  • @9736steve problem solved. the ps3 or the 3.5' h.d. hasn't receiving proper voltage. I've managed to only connect the sata cable and a external power supply to the h.d. and it worked like a charm!!!!

someday I'll post a vid with this "low cost method"

one more thing I've managed to have 2 different CFW in the h.d. now I can swap from "KweaWeawmaew" and Rebug easily

  • hello.I'm trying to do something similar but with a 3.5, 500g hard drive with a extended sata and power cable SATA-7-15P-Data-Power-Extension-Cable--54cm-Length

when I boot the ps3 she alerts me saying "hard drive is not correct and I need to insert the correct one". I've booted in to "safe mode" but it gives me the same error.

the hard drive is limited do 1.5speed, tried with blank partition and fat32 still didn't boot or formatted to the ps3 system

  • does the PS3 install the OS automatically?

  • You're gonna love my nuts

  • is this legal?

  • @Andrewr1204 It's allowed but you'll lose your warranty if you do this.

  • You don't need to modify your ps3 to have a TeraByte drive.

  • Hi do you have to do this with all 1tb hdd ?? please send me a message. because im thinking of buying one

  • uhhh hey i was wondering do u have the exact specs of the 10 nuts needed, or should i just buy 10 3mm hexagonal nuts, and 10 4mm hexagonal nuts i could use some help, thank you.

  • @fyaq5130 His IP is a 169 address. That's the default address indicating a problem with network connectivity, meaning that it's not his real IP.

My guess is that even if his PS3's IP showed up, it would be either a 192 address or a 10 address, both of which are private network addresses and wouldn't really get a hacker anywhere.

  • i dont if its a good idea showing ur ip adress to people

  • I have a ps3 with 1Tb HDD and I no need to modify the console!!!!!!

    Works perfectly!!!!!

  • I just upgraded my ps3 to a 500GB

  • No need to do all this, just take the tray out and the 12,5 mm hard drive will fit in...

  • I think I'll just settle for a 750gb for internal and keep my warranty. Another 250gb is too much work. Just use 2tb external for files <4gb, internal for rest, problem solved.

  • im thinking should i get external hard drive or replace old one cause i dont want to be constantly switching between 2 internal hardrives just to play a game but i dont want to use external because i heard it only lets u download a limited amount of space per file

  • i saw ur ip address

  • u gt it freom toshiba??

  • I GOT A 2 TERABYTE PS3 HARDDRIVE AND I DID NOT EVEN HAVE TO CUT ANYTHING!!!

  • @MUSCLEMASSHAMMERFEST do you have the newer slim type ps3 or the old phat style and what model?

  • @MUSCLEMASSHAMMERFEST there are not even 2tb 2,5" hdds. stop lying

  • What model is this? it doesnt look anything like my 60gb release Ps3 (inside that is)

  • or when you first get your drive do not format it at all put it in the playstation 3 straight away and let the playstation 3 format it if it does not recognise it then get your pc to format it i use swiss knife or fatformat32

  • most people are storing and playing JB ps3 games on external hdd ive tried and they seems to play fine maybe a small increase in loading times but i got 60+ games on there and most work...so until they have 9.5mm or less thick (with 5400 rpm dont forget) 1tb 2.5" drive just use the external formatted to fat32 ...which also eliminates the problem with transfering games over 4gb (use of a ftp server to ps3)

  • who are all these dumb people saying all hdds are the same size? Obviously not if they dont fit ya retards! 2.5 come in different heights, 7mm 9.5mm, 12.5mm and probably larger still! as eirlier post says hitachi has a 1tb 7mm"Height" 2.5 "width" hdd coming out in march they might be out now (feb 2011) but they are gonna be 3x the price, ...

  • this is the 60gb version??

  • "industrial designers being the way they are, give you no clearances!??" ahh i dont think they intended for ppl to attack their ps3's with a sharp chisel. lol. sorry m8 not having a go i just had a big laugh though. thanks for the vid.

  • @hardstylez45

ha ha. you know what i mean designers work in fractions of millimeters, builders work within millimeters and us electricians work in centimeters.

  • why didnt u get a 2.5 inch?

  • I'm upgrading mine to 500 gb but to be honest its easier to just use a external hard drive...there some nice looking ones available now so won't look out of place next to the ps3 plus they don't void your warranty like the 1tb mod one does....

  • Seems like a lot of effort lol. I recently upgraded from 40gb (stock) to 500gb and 500gb is plenty :D

  • thants why you have to space everything up 3mm

  • I bought one 1Tb HD for my PS3 and when I tried to install it, it was too thick (like 3 mm too much). Is there any specification for the size of the HD ?

  • remember to make a back up of your system, you can use an ipod by the way if you have one with enough space, ipod touch does not work, just make sure you enable disc use in itunes for the ipod

  • @Omegaslashbuster1

FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN ACTUALLY AFFORD GAMES AND MOVIES AND IS IT ANY OF YOUR BUSINESS WHY SOMEONE WOULD WANT THAT AMOUNT OF SPACE

  • I upgraded my PS3 from 60 to 500 gigs, could have gotton at 640 gig, but I don't think it's that nessacery. IS THERE A GOD DAMN REASON Y U NEED A TERABYTE IN YOUR PS3!?!?

  • @Omegaslashbuster1 i upgraded mine to 500gb today reason being is i only had 40gb har drive and i download alot of guitar hero stuff and i have transferred all my other guitar hero games into ghwor which each game transfer takes near 3 gig of space, the playstation now it is essential to have large space due to all the game add ons and goodies that the playstation online store has to offer, so yes 1tb would be great but didnt want to chance it on what this guy done to his console

  • eww fatty. my ps3 is in shape

  • be really careful when using that, most gaming systems aren't built to sustain a hard drive running at a high speed. If you do run it at a high speed it will burn out the hard drive or the system's power supply

  • very nice and informative... been thinking about 1tb for a while now...

  • really good vid thanks

  • I'm a little confused. You said 4mm nuts and then you said 3mm nuts. Do I need both sizes? Can you tell me what exactly to get from home depot so that I don't get the wrong parts? Thanks

  • @SplimageO They are 4mm thread size which is approximately 3mm thick. any nut or washer that clears the screws and is about 3mm thick should do the trick

  • can you just use a usb drive, and format it to fat 32 or maybe it will load faster with the internal drive

  • @jh3835 i only fitted it internally because play TV will only record to the internal drive or so i was told

  • @DDynamitekick oh, wow, i guess ill be doing the same. but i here there is a 1tb 2.5, 9.5mm drive coming out that will fit the slot, ill wait so i dont have to do a extensive mod. i may consider that.

  • oh and with using the nuts to space everything up is it noticeable once everything is put back together? Are there any gaps anywhere?

  • @zq8blazer no it all look original except for the slot in the hard drive cover

  • Have you had any performance issues? I've read people have stuttering/lag issues with cut scenes on some games with hard drives that are over 640gb's and are 5200rpms and not the stock 5400rpms.

  • @zq8blazer No performance issues but i dont play many games mainly use for movies. My son plays red dead and has had no issues. There are no gaps other than the small slot i cut into the cover of the hard drive but looks very neat.

  • @9736stavros I have over 100 movies on my PS3's internal hard drive and have ran out of room so I need something larger but I just want to make sure I don't have issues with the movies not playing properly. So you don't have any issues with your movies on your internal hard drive playing?

  • hi i have a 40gb non bc ps3 and the layout for it is different then what you show on youtube. its actually harder to get to the heat sink and raise it up so the 1tb can fit . which model are you showing? thanx

  • @Isaiahj2003 this is the fat ps3

  • sony would provide detailed instructions on how to do this for each model of ps3 on their website. im 99% sure you didn't have to cut away the top piece because sony would have told you how to replace the hard drive. sony speciically says that this will not void your warranty , so if they provide instructions and it wont void your warranty than it is not a mod.

  • @bigboom273 what ever if you know so much why not post the link

  • the drive you used is slightly biggger than what is in the system so some modification is required, or use a smaller drive or external

  • @bigboom273 1tbs are 12.5mm thick and the PS3's only accept 9.5mm thick hard drives, that is why he had to mod the console. You don't have to cut away the top piece or take apart the console if and only if the hard drive s 9.5mm thick, anymore than that you will have to mod it.

  • @zq8blazer

yeah, i realize that now.. i made a pretty stupid comment, but there is a way to do it without doing all this with a 1TB HDD. Just connect SATA wires from the hard drive to the connections inside the hard drive compartment thingy. then you can have the hard drive sticking out of the ps3. it will look pretty ugly, but at least you can have a 1TB 'internal' hard drive without having to open up your ps3 and void your warranty if its still active.

  • @bigboom273 i find that hilarious, have you checked what that sticker says just above the Hard drive carriage on the ps3 to unscrew the screw to lift the top off? It says "Warranty Seal. Warranty voided if removed or damaged." Also fyi you might not have watched the whole video OR not know much about Hard drives because obviously 1TB 2.5" versions are a bit thicker than your regular 2.5" hard drives. Therefore this "mod" was necessary. I rest my case.

  • @bigboom273 1 tb drives are thicker than other hdd's that are intended for the ps3

  • Great video, but it will only help those with 40GB FAT PS3s. That is, the non-BC FATs that came out just before the slim was announced.

The BC FATs have a different layout inside where the HDD cage isn't as accessible.

Also, a far, far easier mod would be to just remove the top of the drive cage once the top half of the system is opened up. The drive drops into position and is perfectly snug. You don't need to go through all the trouble detailed here.

  • Are there any HDDs that you don't have to worry about fucking with the case with? I don't want to do all that nonsense just for a 1TB.

  • @gir489

all hard drives are the same size, go to the playstation website to find better detailed instructions on how to instal a hard drive. you probably wont need to mess with anything to install it. or if you want a hard drive that requires no installation, get an external hard drive. they just plug in and its as simple as that. you mayneed to format it to fat32 before using it on your ps3 though. there are videos on how to do that.

  • @bigboom273 1tb+ 2.5'' sata HDD have more platters than normal making them to thick to fit in the ps3

  • @bigboom273

so far external do not work with jailbreak

  • @boazzaob It works but the games are less compatible

  • @boazzaob Yes they do. Format to fat32.

  • i thought all 2.5 inch hard drives were the same size?

  • 2.5's are all the same size. since they are LapTop/NetBook HardDrives. Except for the data size to store files/folders, which can vary. SSD's (Solid State) may even work, since they are 2.5 and maybe SATA-based.

Please Note: IDE PATA 2.5 will only work, if there is enough room and a adapter is inserted.

  • i'm not sure if you're aware, but the PS3 has recently been jailbroken, making that 1TB drive very useful..

anyway, awesome stuff! i think i'll wait till march for the 2.5/9.5 1TB drive from hitachi which should be coming out around march.

could you comment on the drive's performance?

  • @guitarplayerone drive is working perfectly

  • @guitarplayerone What does jailbroken mean? I only did it for play tv as i heard it only records to the internal drive

  • @9736stavros It allows you to backup your games. You can now play pirated games on the PS3. It's for people that are to cheap to buy games.

  • @9736stavros Jailbroken means you can run homebrew (and emulators) on your ps3. You know, just like an iphone jailbreak or a xbox softmod or ps2 free mcboot or the wii homebrew channel.

  • @9736stavros If it's jailbroken then you can play ripped/copied games off your PS3's hard drive, but pretty much any hard drive that is over 500gb's in the PS3 stutters which is why I asked you if you've had any stuttering issues.

  • @9736stavros omg, the author of a harddrive on the ps3 console don't know what jailbroken means? lmao.

  • @9736stavros jailbreakin your ps3 means you can install games to the hard drive and you only need a cheap game to let the ps3 read it and play the games off your hard drive. i have a 1tb in my ps3 and i have the jail break and have 60games on it with 500gb of storage left

  • @9736stavros

No Play TV in USA yet.

  • Great vid, followed this and just connected my WD 1TB drive.

  • nice video great job, I was thinking about upgrading from 500gb to 1tb didn`t know if the ps3 is going to recognize it and of course the space issue. for easyer formating there is a cable with power adapter sold at frys electromics for $24 that is perfect for outside format due the problem on ps3 not reading the drive

  • Anyway good job thumbs up for u !

  • What bout the playstation 3 slim ?

  • @nuke888 dont know anything about the slim sorry

  • thanks did this couple days ago.

  • @JJesso1993 definitely leave the hard drive cover off or cut about three millimeters off the top of the cover as the fan will suck air across the hard drive

  • Thanks for this info, I don't have a PS3. But it's nice to know what problems you come across.
