  • Love the almost mournful vocals of Ms. Black .Crystal clear pure voice, lovely

  • What a pure, true voice, and at only 24...

  • cool clip thanks for sharing ..

  • Stunningly beautiful. I can only imagine what the McGarrigles' heavenly harmonies might have sounded like wedded to Mary Black's powerful and poignant voice.

  • go mary go, this is Irelands greatest asset......beautiful singers and she is one of the best, Privilged to have seen her live 3 times and can't wait to see her again

  • Wow! Such a beautiful cover! Mary Black at her best. I prefer this type of song and arrangement over some of the more overproduced songs on some of Mary's songs. She has an incredible voice and I love many of her songs...just don't care as much for ones that have a lot of overproduced arrangements as some of the later albums (or should say some songs...not all). This song is outstanding!!!

    Vocals and arrangement.

  • @ Hi jkoncz.....back at you...Mary Black is a brilliant artist and a lovely woman.

  • Tarja Merivirta also sings Heart Like a Wheel!

  • BRILLIANT!!.....goosebumps......what a GREAT singer Mary Black is.

  • @lanetemple You got that right she is wonderful and does a great job on this song by the McGarrigle Sisters...

  • Such purity...the McGarrigle sisters rich legacy is honored by the purity and magesty of Mary Black's compelling delivery.

    Thanks for the post.

    Dawn/♥4Pequeno♥

  • I prefer The corrs cover....but that one is good too.

  • I've never quite gotten over the beauty of Micheal O'Domhnaill's guitar playing. Thanks for posting this.

  • this song is a heartbreak...............

  • I Know it was written by Anna but I always think of it as a McGarrigle song from a Concert in Theatre L in Bellfield in Dublin Ireland over 30 years ago. What a song and what a memory

    Paddy P

  • Here's a nice tribute to Kate McGarrigle:

    coverlaydown. com/2010/01/ rip-kate-mcgarrigle

  • This is a beautiful version ... but nothing can surpass the original McGarrigle sisters' rendition. Love to one and all from Jarrahnut (Colin) in wonderful Western Australia xxx

  • The song was written by Anna McGarrigle, the older sister of Kate

  • The original singer of the song Kate McGarrigle died yesterday. God rest her soul. xxxxx

  • i told my friend shirley who is in dublin to look for mary's song, her voice is mesmerizing, she'll bring u in cloud 9

  • omg...almost break me in tears whenever i hear mary sing this song...she brings me in solitude...i miss my family, my wife & 3 kids in my hometown philippines..the best rendition i've ever heard..she gives justice to the song, so is song for ireland..i love irish folks..

  • This is fantastic, funny I'm thinking of another Mary listening to her sing: Mary Hopkin.

They sound very similar, I'm not knocking MB in any way.

  • such sweet heaven!!! her voice is fingers touching my soul!

  • it doesn't get better

  • just amazing i canr believe his was 10yrs before i was even born marys a legend and IncredibleHulk12 ur 100% rite nowadays ya cant here the singer and there souting over the mike to be heard i gig but always make sure im heard i have a powerful voice so its usually fine anyway,.. god i wud have love to been alive back then everything was so simple and ireland was in its prime and music was at its best and life was amazing!!!xX

  • Oh my God! Who knew??

  • absolutely beautiful...........

  • Lovely song, lovely lass !!!

  • Five stars!! Wow

  • Yes

  • musica linda e cantora adoravel

  • this is what music was always meant to sound like. not too busy. the guitar doesnt drown out her voice, but supports it.

  • Wonderful...

  • Absolutely fantastic. Beautiful singing, beautiful song, beautiful accompanyment.

  • Just about says it all. Very poignant. G. Iona Breeze.

  • This is absolutely beautiful.

  • Lovely song, thanks Jan:)

  • thanks

  • fecking grand this grace type song hits the higher of what it means to be in love!

  • Different times Knockfish unfair to compair 30 years is a long long time

  • i disagree wholeheartedly

  • I love the vocal richness of the McGarrigle harmony

and I love the mournful wisdom of this version by Black.

Renditions should not be, in my view, an attempt to replicate, but an opportunity to reinterpret and highlight other qualities in a song which may not have been previously expressed.

That a person prefers one version over another reflects more on her/him, than it does on the performer.

  • Good point "oopsydahlia" I was reared to believe that "Music is in the ear of the listener". Who cares why we light things

I first heard the McGarrigles sing this in Dublin in what 1975 or 6. I can still remember it great memory of a great song, great gig all those years ago

  • The best version ive ever heard by far

  • I like this song and love Mary Black's voice.

  • I'm a big fan of Kate and Anna but I really love this version by Mary.

But then I'm also feel quite biased by having Joan Baez as my favorite female singer...

  • Kate and Anna's version is my absolute favourite, however this version has a photo finish for second. It's beautiful.

  • ditto

  • most beautiful thing ever. takes me back to last winter. i watched this video every day before school.

  • beautiful..

does anybody know where I can find the version of billy bragg??

  • fantastic version .. Mary ..lovely regards from Scottishb fan .. good luck Mary ... x x x x ........ see you soon .b and its on;ly love x x x

  • Wonderful Mary Black, of course. And a marvellous song. But how great to see her singing and looking so natural before she hit the big time. And how great to see Micheal N'Domhnaill on one of the guitars.

  • Sorry to correct you, but that's Mícheál Ó Domhnaill (R.I.P. 7th of July 2006).

    Great stuff indeed!

(Cara Dillon also did a very good version of Kate & Anna McGarrigle's classic.)

Mary's singing is fantastic, obviously, too!

  • Ok, Great Song. My favorite versions in order; 1 Mary Black, 2 Anna and Kate 3 Ronstadt 4 Corrs.

  • The Corrs might have been higher ;)

  • I do give the Corrs the nod over Mary Black on "A Song for Ireland", a simply beautiful song.

  • Each and every note is pure, thanks Mary

  • Sung by the heart, strong and nice allright: still Kate & Anna MvGarrigle's version is my favorite...

  • Jeeze ... her mouth is miles from the microphone.  What a powerful voice!

  • @pippicat Yeah and it's not diminished today - she's possibly even better - heard her with Finbar Furey Walking With Me Darling - in a lower register and pure and sweet as ever. Bit hard to find her cd's down here (Oz) hope she comes back soon and her record company gets off its arse..

  • So beautiful. Thank you for posting it.

  • Outstanding video!

  • 美しすぎる名曲 たまらん

  • one of the best versions I have ever heard but then again Mary Black is one of a kind and we're lucky to have witness of her!

  • What a beautiful young woman with a voice to match.

  • This brings tears to my eyes. Beautiful!

  • That must be what angels sound like.

  • Tamelijk monotone versie, ik prefereer die van Kate & Anna McGarrigle.

Quite a monotone version, I prefer etc....

  • weet jij of dit op dvd te verkrijgen is?

  • Am I correct in saying that a guitarist named Pat Armstrong played and recorded for Mary?

  • is that Declan Sinnot on guitar?

  • The main guitar is Micheal O'Domhnaill, 12-string is Gerry O'Beirne and I'm guessing the fiddle is by Kevin Burke.

  • This is the first time I've heard the "silver bells" of a female voice.

  • I don't know much about mary but listening to her I like her music I also like the gospelpkr

  • this is just GREAT

  • Mary Black sings this beautifully, i much prefer it to the Corrs version, but my ultimate favourite would have to be Kate and Anna McGarrigle ...

  • mine is yours x

  • thanks JC, that's cos you're a sweetheart:-) xx

  • I am completely enraptured by Mary's voice. I can't stop listening. I love how her voice changed from a piercing soprano to a mello, smooth alto over the years. I'm going to see her in concert again in a few weeks. Can't wait!

  • Gorgeous performance. Not wanting to wade into the silly and pointless comparison arguments, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me who's on 12-string. I know the 6 is played by the late and much-loved Michael O'Dhomnaill (hope I didn't butcher the spelling---may I just sayt "O'Donnell"?)

  • Why, by the way, as this clip labeled "As I Roved Out" at the beginning?

  • As I roved out was the name of the scource programme from the TV

The guitar player is Gerry O'Beirne

    :-)

  • Love this one as much as Linda's!

  • Very classic rendition. I don't think Andrea corr should be brought into the review. Her version is different, so what? Mary Black is more the classic type singer.

  • Some say vile performance? I say it is only LOVE

please stop comparing, colour blue need's not to be yellow to be!

  • The McGarrigles can't sing! Tell me joking!

  • Another nice CELTIC interpretion, Again a very HIGH LOW sound. Ofcourse, Ronstadt version is the best.

McGarrigles sisters CANNOT SING. good writers but they sound like minnie mouse on speed. This song is sung nicely but Irish singers because of its lyrics and morose but Ronstadt version and arrangments are great too.

  • lovely, mcgarriggle sisters can't be beaten on anything, but lovely version

  • Andrea Corr should listen to this version - this is how you sing it

  • this is such a fantastic voice...makes me cry

  • outstanding song

  • Linda Ronstadt sang a wonderful version as well. This is truly beautiful.

  • Does anyone commenting here carry a torch for the best version of this song by Kate and Anna McGarrigle themselves like I do, better by far than the version by Ronstadt, and still a grade better than even these great versions by Mary Black or that of The Corrs?

  • Yes - me :)

  • I have to say I haven't heard their version. Is it available here? Can't seem to find it. They are amazing so am sure it is beautiful as well. Mary just has a certain tonality that cuts deep into a song.

  • Hers is a great version, but still doesn't quite come close enough to cut the version by The McGarrigles, where you can get ALL of the original feeling of the song the authoress intended, plus the delicate and perfect arrangements it is accompanied by.

  • You may be right but then again your talking about the Mc Garrigles as in two voices-harmonies etc. Here Mary does it alone. I have heard the Mc Garrigles version and its great.

  • Yup.

  • lol..i think The Corrs' version is better....this woman's voice is so sharp..lol

  • This is such a wonderful song. Has this specific version ever been released on cd? Or is there any way to get this recording on mp3, or cd.

  • AND ... beautiful backing..RIP Micheal!

  • One of the loveliest songs ever written, and a beautiful performance. Thanks to Mary and to the poster!

  • Beautiful with poniant words

  • I love this song, Mary sings it really good!! HAs anyone heard the version of The Corrs? Also lovely!!

  • Vile performance. Can't stand them :/

  • This tune does go right to the heart, amazing!

  • One of the most beautiful voices in Irish Music.

And what a song by Kate and Anna McGarrigle...Sheer magic.
